Why does Microsoft need them? Why do they want them so badly that they can't wait until the next console to launch them? What's the point of these avatars compared to gamer pictures, and how useful will they genuinely be while I'm using my Xbox?

I don't want these avatars. Luckily, the new "Xbox Experience" is an optional thing, so I'll give it a bash to see if it's better than the original but I can't help but think that I'll end up coming back to the old, original, 360 interface. For me, it makes Microsoft look desperate and sleazy.

But what about you? Do you think these avatars are a good thing?

Here's a video of the new avatars in action (sort of).

They won't be 'useful'. As far as this Kotaku [http://kotaku.com/5016638/microsoft-avatars-will-be-playable-licensed] article states, all they're good for is inserting into a few arcade/retail games. So they're basically Xbox Miis, as far as I can tell, with a tad more customisation if the rumours are to be believed.

They're not a good or bad thing, they're just there. Would I feel my life worse off without them? Not really. Do I find it enriched because of them? Equally, no. They're just there, they might be fun to mess about with and alleviate a few moments of boredom from the day, but that's about it.

I might fiddle with mine, swap around a few things. But as long as my games still play, and seriously cut some ninja ass up, it doesn't bother me.

There's nothing wrong with them, but they won't really do much to further the experience, I have no problem with them as they are free

I'm not gonna pay it any mind, the wii is an entertainment console, the PS3 is a gaming console, and Mr.360 is trying to get the best of both worlds (in all fairness if you add a Ps3 and a wii and divide by two: you would have a 360)

Very truthful statement, I hate the xbox mii's...Wait 'Avaters' because they are so babyish looking. (Unlike Homes avaters which actually reach a ground of looking decent.)

I'd have to agree with that, I mean when a soccer mom is going to buy a console for their kid are they really going to be swayed that the console that has all the bloody, testosterone (perposterone!) filled games with the blood guts and gore of the games has some cute little avatars? Does that someone nulify the already established 360 manly games out there?

I'm pretty sure they'd choose the console that seems innocent (and more intruiguing, what with the motion control an all.)

Sounds like they'll also be used in the online Primetime games (multiplayer gameshows on your console), an application which will actually profit from a personalisable digital avatar, because you are playing as yourself. Which is at least one step up from Miis, because once you've created your Mii you have nothing to do with the fucker other than Wii Sports, due to Nintendo's rabid fear of anything approaching a decent online proposition.

Do microsoft really think that we'll take time out of our Gears 2 playing to make a mii60? I definetly won't.

You sound like my Grandma talking about that new fangled rock & roll music and blue jeans. It's new, it's interesting, it'll attract people to the Xbox and give established users something fresh. Yeah, it's about making money for Microsoft, but they are a multinational corp., it's what they do.

As far as I can tell there is no new wonder as far as functionality is concerned, it just looks cool.
