So basically, I'm thinking of getting it.

Yes, I know the awful reception it had and the bugs and all that stuff.
However, it's been a little while since release, and at the end of the day I'm still a sucker for Assassin's Creed.

What I'm asking isn't about the story or gameplay, but more the condition the game is in now.
Have the majority of bugs been fixed? Is it better optimised than it was on release?

I wouldn't get it for full price, rather I'll be relying on this Steam Summer Sale.

Yes. Ubi squashed most of the game-breaking stuff.

Marginally better framerates all round. If you're unfortunate enough to have a PC that disagrees with the game, you're looking at 7-15 second hitches on occasion, but this does seem reasonably uncommon.

What are your hardware specs?

A Core i5-4690K @ 3.5GHz, 2 GTX 970's in SLI, 16GB RAM, running at 1440p. If that helps!

The game is a true sight to behold, that's for sure. The rendition of 18th century Paris is absolutely gorgeous with a dazzling amount of detail. No matter how much the programmers of the game dropped the ball, the animators more than made up for this. Though, most of the worst bugs and performance issues should be resolved by now. I liked the change in parkouring compared to previous AC games, and the change in combat that relied less on parrying that made previous games such a breeze(it's still a bit iffy though). The relationship between the game's protagonist Arno and his love interest Elize was also really well put together(usually these things always make me cringe. :p)

They made a lot of changes to the engine and mechanics of the game, some of which worked out well and some of which didn't. If you liked previous AC games I think it's still definitely worth picking up though.

I wouldn't have played the game if I hadn't received it as a gift. And I could live a 1000 years not playing it and be perfectly content, even though I was a sucker for AC until Unity.

It's garbage. Complete and utter garbage. The graphics in this game work against it, rather than for it. Sure, it looks like CGI and it's probably the most graphically advanced game to date, but it doesn't provide you with any gameplay benefits. It does the exact opposite.

The atmosphere of the game is ugly as shit, the streets are overcrowded to such a degree that it hurts gameplay a lot, especially when the NPC's aren't really doing anything. They don't seem like real people at all. They're more like non-threatening zombies than real people. And they often times try to walk where they're not supposed to because of shitty programming.

Also, everything looks the same. There are too many details all around you that you simply cannot stop to admire the view or anything, because there's nothing to admire. There's no thought being put into the design of the world. Game design should take precedence over realism. In this game it doesn't. It's graphics > everything else. It's terribly designed, and the only thing they aimed for was uber realism. It's just an incredibly realistic looking game. Which sounds cool, but it really fuckin' isn't. Aesthetics and graphics are equally important. Ubisoft took care of the graphics, but aesthetically the game looks like crap. Assassin's Creed 2 looks better than this because of it's unique aesthetic design. Hell, even the first AC looks better because it's put together far better.

Ubisoft didn't think about the consequences of adding so much detail. The city looks cluttered. It looks the same everywhere you turn and it's ugly as shit. It's a soulless environment filled with same old reused assets that you'll be forced to look at on every turn.

It is pretty much fixed as far as console versions go, I cannot speak for PC though. The variables are beyond my scope.
Combat is refreshingly tough and weighty. It can take 2 good hits to go down sometimes. But the death animations are nicely done so they soften the blow marginally. Climbing has been giving more control and a slight extra weightiness which feels more methodical.
Story has some charming moments, still got a swashbuckling feel to some of the scenes. Assassinations are much more open to choice, yet still remaining challenging. Getting spotted now means you cant take on 50 guards with just 1 button. Best to run at that point.
Multiplayer is a mixed bag. I don't usually go for it, but seeing as some cool gear is unlocked with missions, I gave it a blast and seemed to be having what you humans call "fun." Luckily my sessions were with silent players, hell knows what having to listen to a mouthy kid while stealthing about would do to me.

So yes. If you are a sucker for AC, speaking as a sucker myself, go for it. It is already cheap without the steam sale, so any cheaper is just begging for grabsies.
