(did a quick search and couldn't find anything, apologies if this has already been created)

so, in case anybody missed it, dexter has finally finished after 8 long seasons. so i ask you (if you watched it), what did you think of the ending? what did you think of the season in general? and what have been your highlights of the whole show?

i'll spoiler the whole post, pretty much spoils the ending if you haven't already seen it

for me:
1) the ending is... well, a bit underwhelming. i get it, i think. he somehow survives the storm, either by luck or his will to survive, but realises that he just can't be around people, and so confines himself to a life of solitude. i'd like to think that he has given up his killing, although he said in the episode that his moving on was for something better, a life with hannah and harrison, so without them he might relapse and go back to his old self... i did like his final words though, and liked hannah and harrison having their own life together.

2) season was better than 7, but still not the best. i think the main villain was introduced a bit too late, and was a bit disappointed that zakk was got rid of so early, i thought he could have played a bigger role. i did like the part of dr vogel, and daniel vogel towards the end was a pretty decent character.

3) for me, i loved season 4 and season 6. the trinity killer was just incredible, both his interactions with dexter and with his family, and the doomsday killer was really interesting (plus had some of the cooler deaths). also, the ending of season 4... just, damn...

Ok, here are some random thoughts about Dexter:
1) I really hated the ending of Dexter. I just thought it was a big let down and felt really flat. I think a big reason that it lost a lot of it's impact was because the ending relied on me caring about the characters and I stopped caring about the characters a long time ago. I did not care in least that Debra died, and I could care less about what happened to Dexter. Thinking about it I kind of really gave up on Dexter around season 6, I was watching it more out of habit then anything else.

2) Almost all the shots where the storm is coming and Dexter is on his boat with Debra's body look terrible to me. The first time I watched the episode I thought they were really badly done green screen shots, but I've looked at it again and I think Dexter and the boat haven't been colour graded or lit properly. Maybe it's just me, I do a lot of sky replacement and colour grading so it might have just made me really picky about that sort of stuff. Whenever I see anything that has been digitally touched up part of my brain just screams FAKE! FAKE! FAKE!

3) My favourite seasons of Dexter would have to be the first four. I really felt there was a dramatic loss in quality after season four, so much so that I've often wondered if some writers left after that season. I think that something must have changed behind the scenes for the show to deteriorate so quickly.

4) I think that Jimmy Smitts performance as Miguel Prado in season 3 is really underrated. Now while I think John Lithgow played the best villain on Dexter, I think it's unfortunate how much attention he gets for that while people seem to forget about Jimmy Smitts. Before Lithgow he was hands down my favourite villain. What I love about his character is how when you watch season three for the first time you don't find out till late in the season that Miguel has been manipulating Dexter all along and is insane. But if you go back and watch season 3 again already knowing that he is manipulative and insane you see it right from the first episode. Everything he says and everything he does is to lull everyone around him into a false sense of security all while he's pulling strings and trying to figure out how everything benefits him.

5) Season Six had the worst special effects out of all the seasons. Because it was just really crappy CGI(I still haven't gotten over those god awful CGI snakes).

6) What the hell was the point of having the Marshal character played by Kenny Johnson? You could have not had that character at all and it really wouldn't have changed much. Everything he did you could have easily just had Debra's boss do. And that would have created a more interesting dynamic between Dexter, Debra and him. Having a whole new character introduced late just felt like needless padding. In fact that pretty much sums up Season 8.

**EDIT**
7) Ok, what the hell is with the big 'twist' of shows being that the main character seems to be dead but not really being dead? I just finished watching Burn Notice the other day and it ends the same way. Is everyone just ripping off Dark Knight Rises? Hell , Hanna is at a Cafe when she finds out that Dexter is 'dead'.
They better not do the same thing with Breaking Bad.

I think the ending was perfectly acceptable. Honestly, anything else I could think of would be cheesy or unrealistic. I think it fit the motivations of all the characters and doesn't leave any loose ends.

see i would have agreed here, apart from the final scene
it just leaves too much unsaid. how did he survive? did he want to survive? was it a failed suicide attempt? has he gone back to killing? has harry come back into his mind?

just one or two of those questions being answered would help.

I though the ending was complete and utter bullshit. Dexter has become so unlikeable since the end of last season that I really did want him to get caught. Instead we get the bullshit ending where Dexter loses nothing. Instead like always he does whatever he wants and gets away from it. He can even murder a prisoner on camera and just walk away. He can carry a dead body in front of a huge number of people and get away with it. It is so ridiculously retarded and I hated every second of it. It was the worst finale possible and the worst season. I hated it so much that I would never recommend this show to anyone. In fact I would tell people to avoid this show like a plague because with an ending like this the entire thing feels like a waste of time.

Not a big fan of the ending. It goes against the already established things, like Dexter's inability to actually stop killing people (hence bullshit decision to let Deb bring in that Brains Surgeon guy, which leads directly to her death), and Dexter's earlier resolution to accept himself for what he is, but live and take care of his family no matter what. But no, instead he becomes a lumberjack and abandons his 5 yo kid with a known killer. Very smooth, Dex.

It's like they stole the ending from Monty Python show, as "Homicidal Barber" sketch is followed directly by "Lumberjack song"
