Okay since when are cut scenes like 10 minutes long? Yeah I get it takes weeks to get these cinematics looking great but why can't they just be 1-5 minutes? Of course I could skip it but of course then the story wouldn't be very interesting. What are your opinioins?

You haven't tried Metal Gear Solid 4 yet, have you? If you think 10 minute cut scenes are bad you can cook a 15 lb. turkey in the time one of the cut scenes in MGS4 plays through.

There's a reason I have never played Metal Gear. I borrowed it from a friend once and just lost interest from the cinematic.

So...you don't want to see the story, but you want to see the story? If you're impatient enough to want to game immediately, there's no shame in skipping the scene.

I often see cutscenes as a reward for completing a section of a game, but if they're done poorly then they can just be a pain in the arse.

Stay away from RPGs. Both J and W. They're full of talking and other plot related things that get in the way. And tend to have long intro cinematics.

And maybe even one of those annoying "character creation" menus.

I just started BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger today...
Holy hell the cutscnes...
And I should've done some training before starting the story...

i don't mind cutscenes being long, but they should always be skippable. and putting an unskippable cutscene right before a difficult bossfight should be a capital crime.

Hey now, don't go insulting Metal Gear [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JARtwFLQpNY] by comparing it to that preachy, hours-long movie for the PS3...

OT: I agree with the sentiment. Storytelling in a video game should be accomplished interactively. This is why I'm not fond of many new games.

two-three minute cut scenes are awesome.
More than five just gets a bit boring and makes me loose what ever little knowledge I had about the plot I actually knew...When things tent to get long I go make myself a sammich.

I mean I didn't even get ten minutes of game play in for FF13 or w/e number its on, because I had just watched a full on movie and no game play.

Final Fantasy XIII was another really bad one when it came to cutscenes. Both however, are beaten out by Heavy Rain which was largely intractable cutscenes.

You have one of two options, really...
1) Deal with it.
2) Play a different game.

If you're looking for a discussion on cut scene length, then yes. I agree.
(Damn, i kinda expected to have more to say on this...oh well)

I once sat in a cutscene in MGS2 and reaised that it had gone on for 20 minutes and thought 'surely I can be doing something more interesting'

I don't think I played it after that...

There are plenty of games that don't have any. At least any that would take more than 10 seconds.

If they're done well and it's something I want to see, then I like them. If they're badly done and uninteresting, I at least want there to be a possibility to skip.

To each their own. Personally, I quite enjoy games because of their story, so cutscenes are all the better for me. You might note that this is why I like RPGs more than any other.

I don't care for the type of cutscene that involve you having to move dialog forward 1 sentence at a time. If it's voiced and moves along by itself (even with subtitles), I don't mind... but nowadays, having to click through dialog at such a slow pace even starts to bog me down after a while and even makes me lost interest if it goes on too long.

annnnd your question is.
Probably the sentence before the question mark. Just a hunch.
What's funny to me is that Mr. Pope here replied with something he probably meant as a question, but was apparently satisfied with a full stop instead of a question mark. So he replies to a question with a sentence that means absolutely nothing.

Goes to show; when you are going to be snide, use proper grammar.

Anyway, back on topic. Can't remember seeing cut scenes that lasted over ten minutes, but I imagine I'd be bothered by it. If a game tries to hard to shove its story on to you, you'd probably feel like a fat pidgeon on the sidewalk; just not giving a damn.

I have MGS: Twin Snakes, right? Yes. I once made a commitment that I would watch every last one of the cutscenes in that game all the way through. Good idea, right?

I couldn't do it. Long cutscenes just ruin a game. Cutscenes are great, but when it gets to the Hideo Kojima length, I start to get bothered.

You sir, speak the truth, unskippable cutscenes only harm a game, like the first assassins creed where all the cutscenes dont even say alot and on a attempted second runthrough you rage at the bordom
A cutscene should always be skippable but be cool enough that the player wont want to skip it
