Congratulations on that report, I'm glad you took a different perspective on it than most. Funny thing, we did a similar report in high school, and my group was one of the only ones that used the South's perspective in the war. 0_0 But I with you completely about the educational aspect, until the later years of high school we didn't really learn much else about Germany except for their involvement in WWII and the Holocaust. I had to do some digging on my own to learn about the people themselves and everything else that happened during and after that time period.

Why do people think the South is bigoted?

We were the last Western society to eliminate slavery, as well as being the last to stop accepting wholeheartedly the idea of white supremacy over other races. In fact, we gave up the idea of white supremacy such a short time ago that a significant percentage of our population was raised in a time when it was the norm of thought, and generally continue those beliefs, thinly veiled.

Maybe that has something to do with it.

Give it a couple generations. It'll die down.

I'm Canadian, and all those hilarious stereotypes that we couldn't begin to consider the idea of generalizing anyone due to location or origin are... absolutely true (for the most part, obviously).

(Irony noted.)

Well aside from the Wizard of Oz I haven't had much experience with Kansas. But a cousin of mine lived there for a few years and he said it was much like here, except that there were a lot of tornadoes while he was there. The general image in my head though is probably a farmer in his vast wheat field with lots of tornadoes and flying houses in the background XD Ha!

I'm from Alabama. Most of the people in my town are racist. In fact, the KKK was selling peanut brittle near my house not long before I moved here.
But the views of this little hole don't reflect mine. I hate all forms of racism.
I dint think bake drives were something the KKK did. Kinda wonder at pancake breakfast if they ever used aunt jemima syrup before.

Im from Pittsburgh most of the Stereotypes are true

I'm Mexican, and don't dress like a thug, so most people don't treat me like I'm racist or bigoted at all.

That is very accurate, actually. In fact, it's the beginning of tornado season right now! :3

This has been a stereotype that I have always had to deal with, since I live in Alabama. A recent thread on a gubernatorial candidate in Alabama just brought it back to the front of my mind. Why does everyone bash the South as a racist breeding ground? I have known many people who are from different sections of the US who are just as bigoted as some of the people in the South. There are racists and intolerant people wherever you go, so why is much of the hate directed at us Southerners? The majority of the people I know here are kind and gracious. Your response doesn't have to necessarily apply to the South, but have you or your friends ever been stereotyped as a bigot simply because of where you live?

Look, I was born and raised in Florida, though my parents were both from Brooklyn, so I'm from one of the more northern-ish (if you will) Southern states. The reason why southerners are seen largely as stereotypical racist hicks is because, frankly, they are. Here in the rim section of Florida, we jokingly refer to the innerpart of Florida and the Deep South states to our North as the "South in the North". Now, not all Southerners are truly, openly racist, but there are several aspects that pervade southern society that perpetuate the stereotype:

Not once since the end of Reconstruction has there been a black man or woman elected to high state-wide office (Senator or Governor)in the South.

The Ku Klux Klan is still very, very alive in the South, though decidedly less openly violent than they were during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. I can tell you, not from personal experience but by simply word of mouth, where the Klan meets in the central region of Florida on the weekends.

University of Mississippi, of the Deep South, had Rebbie the Rebel as its mascot until very, very recently, and the banning of the song "Dixie" - the anthem of the Confederate States of America, whose sole purpose in being was the perpetuation of slavery - at football games there set off an outcry across the South.

Steve Spurrier, the coach at the University of South Carolina, had to campaign a mere two years ago to get the Confederate flag removed from the statehouse of South Carolina.

Southerners love to talk up the Confederacy as if the rebels were heroes who severed ties with the North in the name of states' rights and freedom, when, in fact, their secession was the reaction to an anti-slavery President coming into office. The lack of ability to grasp that the Confederacy was merely a pro-slavery union is troubling and telling.

Drive around for 10 minutes here in the South - even in the northern trasnplant region that is Florida's rim region - and you will see at least one truck or care with a proud confederate flag on their bumper.

Finally - and most telling - most, if not all, of the state flags of the Southern states contain some variation of the Stars and Bars of the Confederate Flag, even though some of these states only adopted the flags after the rebellion. The confederate flag beign nothing more than a sign of racism, the incorporation of it in the current state flags shows an unwillingness to repent for the past.

I love the South, it's awesome down here. Yeah, there are quite a bit conservatives and Republicans but a lot of them aren't racist or brain-dead. Shocker, I know.
Amen, brother.

I don't mind the stereotype so much, because I always assume the ones who categorize all Southerners as redneck inbred racists as soulless machines that can't talk right, don't care about their fellow man, and protest things to look smart and because they think they should.

They stereotype, I stereotype.

This reminds me of an Episode Top Gear where they get attack in Alabama by hicks
Nobody is stupid enough to impart physical harm however, and those attendents at the gas station were just barking, and knew better than to bite. Might have called the sheriff though, disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace, inciting a riot, etc...

What I find even more annoying, is when your own neighbors believe that bull. I've been called a racist far too many times. I swear, its like little children crying when they think their benefactors are unfair ("Mommy he got more than me!").

I'm not trying to belittle the abuse that was done to many, so long ago. However many people are trying to move forward, and pitching a tantrum and crying racist does not help this issue go away.

Stereotypes are a *****. But you probably aren't all stupid racist hicks. Speaking of hicks, Bill Hicks was from Texas wasn't he? In fact all my favorite comedians are from the south, and none of them have the accent, and they're all pretty cool. Also you guys invented Rock and Roll so you have that going. Don't let us northerners bug you, we can't choose where we're born and keep on keeping on. peace brother, for I am out.

I agree that a lot of Southerners don't do much to help remove the stereotype. Maybe I just live in a "Northern" section of Alabama though, because believe it or not, I haven't heard anything out of the KKK or any other racist groups in a very long time. Sigh... I guess I just have to hope that as the older generations begin to move on, most of the younger kids will lose that sense of "Confederate pride" that you alluded to. I guess it'll just take some time.

I live in America, which, according to many other nations, is full of racist cowboys.

I love the irony.

I live in South Carolina, but I was raised all of my life in New York, and I have to say that the stereotypes that Northerners put on Southerners are completely unfounded and ironically make the people who perpetrate them seem like the bigots. Most people are just that, people, their are good people and bad people just like anywhere else.

I'm not white, and I have not once felt like I was being discriminated against because of my race. Now I have met people that do have a feelings of racism, but they keep those feelings to themselves and even seem to be a bit a ashamed of them.

People are people, no matter where they are from or what race or religion they belong to.

Don't feel bad. New York and The Middle East have been branded as breeding grounds for hatred as well. At least people acknowledge Alabama as a state. I live in good ol' New Mexico. Yes, the state of New Mexico.
Wait, it's a state? I always thought New Mexico was just a really big city in Texas! 0_0

I kid, I kid. I've actually been there before and I must say that the deserts and rock formations are absolutely stunning!

America probably has more racist cowboys than any other nation in the world, so I fail to see the "irony." Could you explain it?
