For the longest time, a friend of mine has been trying to convince me to play World of Warcraft. When I say "the longest time", I mean years. He was convinced that I would enjoy the game and be good at it. I just kept saying that I didn't want to play it.

For reference, I only played one MMO and that was FFXI. This was largely because it was a FF game and I really wanted to be a Dark Knight. Of course, I did enjoy the game and was pretty good at it. I quit it some time later because I grew annoyed with some of the game mechanics and how much I needed a party to accomplish anything (even at level 75, which was the max level at the time).

Recently, I got bit by the MMO bug. I started looking at the new Star Wars: The Old Republic info and have been awaiting a release date. In fact, a lot of us are. Well, my friend convinced me to get into WoW at this time. I bought the game online, actually got the full game, including Cataclysm, for about $60.

I gotta say, that he was right. I do enjoy it. My main is a level 52 Blood Elf Protection Paladin (gotta love refer a friend) and I have a few other minor characters. Blizzard has done an amazing job in the game's design and depth. So, yeah, I like WoW. And it is all my friend's fault! He finally did it!

So, Escapists, have any of your friends worked forever to get you into something that you finally did? This is a gaming discussion, but feel free to tell of movies they wanted you to watch, books to read, food to eat, mountains to climb or anything else.

My friends tried for ages to get me to try out the DiRT 2 demo, and I was never a racing game fan. Now I love them, especially Rally ones.

League of Legends.
I swore I would never play games like that.
That they were beneath me.
Now I'm playing everyday.
I'll never forgive them.

My brother once worked to get me into WoW... but we both got tired of the grind shortly thereafter. I've been back to it three times, but it never gets any better. Slowest Skinner Box I've ever encountered.
...some of the world-building they did is interesting, though.

A friend of mine tried to get me into WoW too.
After 2 years I bought the game and Burning Crusade.
2 weeks later I was bored out of my skull.
Worst 60$ spent ever. (At least my subscription time hadn't started yet)

You should thank your friends. DiRT is an awesome racing series. Will be sad after it ends with the third one...:(

OT: Wasn't really excited for Dragon Age, but a friend of mine finally forced me to try it out and I ended up loving it. Thats about it tbh...

This. Minus the avatar and all.

OT: I was convinced to go into WoW, but I quit for several reasons.
