For the longest time, a friend of mine has been trying to convince me to play World of Warcraft. When I say "the longest time", I mean years. He was convinced that I would enjoy the game and be good at it. I just kept saying that I didn't want to play it.
For reference, I only played one MMO and that was FFXI. This was largely because it was a FF game and I really wanted to be a Dark Knight. Of course, I did enjoy the game and was pretty good at it. I quit it some time later because I grew annoyed with some of the game mechanics and how much I needed a party to accomplish anything (even at level 75, which was the max level at the time).
Recently, I got bit by the MMO bug. I started looking at the new Star Wars: The Old Republic info and have been awaiting a release date. In fact, a lot of us are. Well, my friend convinced me to get into WoW at this time. I bought the game online, actually got the full game, including Cataclysm, for about $60.
I gotta say, that he was right. I do enjoy it. My main is a level 52 Blood Elf Protection Paladin (gotta love refer a friend) and I have a few other minor characters. Blizzard has done an amazing job in the game's design and depth. So, yeah, I like WoW. And it is all my friend's fault! He finally did it!
So, Escapists, have any of your friends worked forever to get you into something that you finally did? This is a gaming discussion, but feel free to tell of movies they wanted you to watch, books to read, food to eat, mountains to climb or anything else.
