I started realising after the first few seasons in Community that they were just rehashing stuff. I think this might be happening with Rick and Morty too. That would be disappointing.

I don't recall a single thing in the new Rick and Morty episode that was a rehash, except the one scene at the end where Morty was sprawled on the garage floor getting ranted at by Rick above.

And that episode was amazing. Best season premiere ever.

Also, if they wanted a more believable reset button, they would have just teleported to another reality forsaking the old one again. That would have been a rehash reset though.

I was more talking about 1. Rick's being nice was actually a fake out 2. Rick's always right 3. Rick gets to treat people like dirt because he's right. 4. We'll just go back to adventuring without consequences. 5. The family always pick Rick over Jerry. 6. As if Jerry and Beth aren't going to get back together, that shenanigans will continue because Dan Harmon. Its what he does.

I will be happy if I'm wrong but I'm now going into this season cautiously.

Quite a bang to start out with. I have a feeling this could be the best season yet. The nods to continuity were very heavily present, and I hope they start using them to their full potential.

I like how they played up the malicious god angle of Rick. There were scenes where he came across as absolutely terrifying, and downright inhuman. He's an unstoppable force of cosmic malice that shreds everything in its path. Though it does detract from the emotional high note of the season 2 finale a bit. In those scenes Rick seemed genuinely remorseful, but now it's all up in the air again. What was it ultimately for? Love for his family and he wanted them to be able to return to a normal life? Or was it just to get closer to the intergalactic government to wreck shit across the multiverse?

It's a bit of a double edged sword: while on the one hand it reduces the emotional impact of that moment and makes it seem less poignant, on the other it amplifies the "Cthulhu" angle of Rick, making him seem genuinely scary, and tipping the series even closer to the tipping point between comedy and horror. The series has been there many many times before, but this episode left me with a lingering sense of unease about their future adventures, whereas the others (almost) always left off with a lighthearted and positive note. What if Rick truly is the monster his fa?ade seems to make him? What if there is no true Rick at all, but just an endless series of facades, masks and layers? Like an infinite onion: all layers with no central core.

I saw the clip of Rick's "origin story" on youtube before I watched the episode, and took it at face value. Of course that turns out to be something else, but in this episode Rick had such complex plans within plans and schemes that Tzeentch himself would be proud. He said the origin story was made up, but can we rely on anything he says at this point? What is and what isn't true with him? Summer says Rick would make things up as he goes along, how true is that? Rick's plans seem far too convoluted to have been made up on the spot, yet far too flexible and erratic to have been planned out from the beginning. He loves his grandkids (or does he?), but has no qualms leaving entire worlds in smoldering ruin. The whole guy is a walking series of contradictions, or seeming contradictions.

Jesus, you could write a 50-page essay trying to deconstruct this character. And this is why Rick and Morty is my favorite TV series of all time. Underneath the fart and dick jokes there's boundless depths to it.

I get the feeling that Rick is intentionally trying to make everyone hate him and leave him. He literally can't stop fucking things up for everyone but he hates that so he wants to turn his family against him. He has numerous chances to just leave things be (by dying) but he can't help but continue his adventures because a) he's too smart for his own good so he's constantly trying to not be bored and b) he's afraid of death. He thinks he doesn't deserve to the happiness of having a family, but he also doesn't want to be alone. So yeah, he's a bundle of contradictions.

Or, maybe he's SO smart that he actually does in fact KNOW he's a cartoon character, but doesn't know what to do with that knowledge (would you?). Just that reality shattering realization would be enough justification for a LOT of his behavior, to be honest.

It kind of bothered me that they had Rick sacrifice his freedom to make his family happy in season 1 ... all so in season 2, it turned out he did it to get back at the government and remove Jerry from the picture. He manipulated his family, used Morty, and at the end did not advance nor develop as a character like what we were led to believe in the season 1 finale.

Rick could of been so much more, but now he's back into being an abusive @$$hat with no sympathy for anything.

OT: Adult Swim rubbed me off the wrong way. While the episode itself was pretty good ... they decided to punish the Samurai Jack fans by not only delaying episode 4, but pushing it back a week just to have a 5 hour rerun of the first episode of R & M of season 3. That's a dick move and don't tell me that's fine, because it's not. I work my butt off all week at work and wanted a good Samurai Jack episode, but instead I get trolled on April Fools. The joke wasn't funny and I felt ripped off.

You're not alone, I got home from work wanting to see Samurai Jack as well. Had people tell me to get over it, they have been waiting over a year for a new episode of Rick and Morty. I told them to bugger off, I've been waiting for ten years to see the end of Jack's story.

I do like Rick and Morty, so it's not as bad for me, but I'm still annoyed.

I am surprised by the switcheroo, but not angry. To have a week off Samurai Jack after 13 odd years is not a big deal at all... And Rick and Morty's cliffhanger was dangling long enough.

I am rooting for Jerry now, and I hope he returns later on the season. Rick has never hidden that he is a self centered asshole, but he kind of crossed a line in that one (or maybe it was because of his long monologue explaining it), and I would lose some interest in Beth's character if she is flanderized to "daddy issues makes her permissive of abusive relationship". On the other hand, I liked the Jerry and Beth dynamic (the main duo adventures are fun, but they can get tiresome if that is all there is), so I hope they didn't just "put him on a bus".

I've only seen a few scenes on YouTube but I did see Rick destroy the galactic government by editing a one to a zero, crashing the galactic currency. I like Rick and Morty for its cleverness and that was lazy illogical nonsense, even for a sci-fi comedy. A computer that decides the value of a currency relative to itself? I'd expect better from a children's cartoon.

Mind you, that Morty and Summer invented more plausible schemes suggests the writers are telling us they can do smarter and are just creating a big April Fool's joke. Showing everything failing if something isn't equal to itself might well be fan service to the philosophers.

This absolutely made my weekend. I kept the Adult Swim app open all day Saturday and just watched it on a loop. I have been dying for Season 3 since the cliffhanger (and excellent) Season 2 finale.

The writing on this episode was superb. Rick was the most Rick out of all the Ricks and we got to see that on full display here. Taking down the Federation was awesome. And how he did it by devaluing their currency was stupidly on point.

Jerry being on his own will be interesting, and Summer's growth as a character is going to be something to watch for. But it all comes down to Rick & Morty (obviously). And I think this will be the darkest season yet, as Rick already said it was going to be.

Rick is starting to suffer from Cartman syndrome, where a characters antics become less funny, tiring, or unsympathetic. As much as I hated the drama between Beth and Jerry, this is definitely a new low for Rick and Beth. Beth I never had much sympathy to begin with (especially as she is painted as the "smarter" of the couple), but she is nothing more than a glorified daddy's girl. At this point, the only characters worth rooting for are Morty and Jerry. Summer, like her mother, is too bust trying to gain Rick's attention and "affection". I remember having dream telling Rick, "Hope you're happy, you brought this hell on to yourself, and if Morty ever decides to kill you, I won't be there help nor show sympathy to you". Rick goes like "Uuuhhh", and I am like "Yeah, that's what I expect you say."

As a Samurai Jack fan, adult_swim can go fuck themselves on that on. I too had a busy week and was looking forward to episode 4. To everyone else that is about to say "get over it"; no, screw you even harder. Samurai Jack has not been on air in 10 years, so I and everyone else have been waiting longer than any of the R & M fans.

Agreed to most of the that, but I was at the point that I did not care what happens to Beth since mid season 2.

I watched it on youtube and holy crap did Rick do some damage to almost everything.

I know the prison computer currency thing was a bit odd but for the person doing it has to have level 9 clearance in a Maximum prison facility.

Plus no one would have thought of throwing a whole space station full of alternate Rick and Morty's at them.

Oh and Summer didn't take crap from anyone.
