Strange as it sounds, the 360 is the next gen console with all the JRPGs. That said, get Little Big Planet GOTY, hell even get it with the controller bundle. It's a kickass game, and your mom'll love it (or, at least won't freak out that you're playing it). It's also got great same screen multiplayer so it's great fun for parties. With LBP you'll take a long time to get bored thanks to all the user created levels you can download (and the ones you can make yourself). Alternatively, you could wait for LBP2, but if you need something right now, get LBP.

Katamari Forever. I think that every gamer should own a Katamari game, or at least play one. They're just so...damn...happy!

Get Demon's Souls. It's a PS3 exclusive with extensive character customization and it's an RPG made in Japan. It's also one of the best games this console generation.

Final Fantasy XIII. I'm going to get flamed for that but it's a genuinely great game in my opinion. It doesn't have a character creator, but it's a really good JRPG. Also, Demon's Souls if you don't mind getting your teeth kicked out by a brutal difficulty level.
NOOOOOO don't be fooled like I was. You can put a 'J' in front of it but it isn't an RPG. RPG's have chracter customization etc..

I second Demons Soul. Then theres InFmous, MGS4, LGP, GT5 is coming in November, Killzone 2 (hard to master) other people will mention the rest.
Are you forgetting about the Crystarium? Not all RPGs allow you to make a fully customized character. In fact, nearly all Final Fantasy games don't.

Anyway, get BlazBlue if you're into fighting games (it's pretty amazing).
Final Fantasy XIII is a pretty good overall experience, even if it is linear.
Pick up FFIX on the PSN if you haven't already played it (Tactics, FFVII, and FFVIII are also on there).
Download Flower from the PSN.
Try out DeathSpank.
Oh, and White Knight Chronicles is a decent game, if a little easy. It's still 60 bucks where I live, though... don't know what's up with that, since it was released nearly half a year ago, and I can't imagine it's selling very well.

I know a lot of people didn't like it, but I love White Knight Chronicles. Other than that, definetly get the 2 Ratchet and Clank games.

Go get Valkyria Chronicles, see you in 3 days.
edit; don't forget to have Vyse and Aika in your party.
This. Vyse is the most awesome non-story-centered character in that game.
I also second the votes for Demon's Souls. Some love on InFamous and Ratchet and Clank as well.

Just saying, I picked up a £12 copy of Final Fantasy XIII already, and you guys are so fucking right you have no idea :D
Linear doesn't bother me; sometimes I prefer it, rather than having to go chase down every little thing with help from a guide (OCD sucks).

I'm rapidly running out of games. I've finished pretty much everything I own now, and so I'm looking for suggestions. I love JRPGs, dislike 1st person games, LOVE steampunk. Other than that, pretty much everything is a go. On top of this, I was looking at White Knight Chronicles for a while, but every review has said the same thing; badly told story, flawed gameplay, sucky battle system. This sucks, if true; firstly, is it? Secondly, since the idea that really brought me to it was the character creator and the JRPGness, is there another game out there like it? With an extensive (and GOOD) character creator, and a main game that is long enough to keep me occupied? I mean, come on; there's only so many times I can play Dynasty Warriors 6: Empires before I get bored.

EDIT: Also, no 18s, please. I'm 17, and my mum still freaked the fuck out when my dad got me Dead Space.
FFXIII (good game, it's different to the previous game, but find me one FF in the series that's similar to another besides direct sequels., Star Ocean the Last Hope.(gameplay's good, annoying characters) Enchanted Arms (i don't care what people think, i liked it.)
I've heard Resonance of fate is quite good also. Might I recommend Yakuza 3? Or possibly Darksiders? Darksiders is similar to Zelda in many ways, but not once did I stop enjoying it. It has a few other elements in it that are quite enjoyable and overall the puzzles really make you think, and best of all it's fun! fun fun!
If you haven't played Folklore, I'm going to suggest that one. Great artistic style, great gameplay, and fucking brilliant story.
If you enjoy having your arse handed to you (and you haven't already bought it, I'll also reccomend Demon's Souls). I'm sure that's been recommended to you a thousand times by now, but still.

Also, on PSN I recommend you buying Vagrant Story if you haven't played that. Brilliant little RPG that will make you want to replay and replay.
I hope that helps ~.^

You might enjoy Yakuza 3,Valkyria Chronicle,White Knight Chronicle, and Deathspank also if you fluent in Japanese, get Tales of Vesperia, and the upcoming Tales of Grace.

Though White Knight might be least enjoyable of the bunch.

*Yakuza 3 is a 18+ game in some area,so yeah.
*I forgot to mention Resonace of Fate,if you want a really challenging JRPG (IE. SMT:Nocturne) then you better get this game.

Not true. I'll grant there's quite a few good ones on the 360 (Project Sylpheed, Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Last remnant, Fable one, but the PS3's got a fair few too.. just no-one's heard of them.

Enchanted Arms, Darksiders (Multiplatform), Star Ocean The last hope (Multiplatform), Demon's souls, Folklore, Cross Edge, White Knight Chronicles, Nier (Multiplatform), FFXIII (Multiplatform), Resonance of fate, 3D dot heroes, Disgaea 3 (that alone is worth it! There's more i'm forgetting, but there's quite a fair few.
You could Almost say Yakuza 3's an action rpg (almost).
-edit- Also, Eternal Sonata.

Wow... I've really been on the fence about getting ROF, but if you're comparing it to Nocturne... I'm sold! buying that when it comes down, for sure!

Ah, yes. I adored Star Ocean: TLH(I), and it kept me going for ages :D
I've also been toying with the idea of buying Darksiders for a while, so I may just get it :)

Wait, wait, hold your horses, Compared to Nocturne,ROF is not as hard, and the story is a lot more...soft? well,it's not as hardcore as Nocturne, and the story won't make sense unless you play all the way to the later chapters.

I just wanna give you some head-ups before you actually buy it,we would want to get our money worth right?

*I beaten Nocturne (I admit, I used gamefaqs >.<) but this game still kicks my butt,so this game is definitely not easy.

Hard RPG's don't phase me (it's something that's been missing form the ff series since VIII and was recently remedied with XIII).
I was just worried the gameplay was kind of shallow, repetitive, the story wasn't any good and that it would be fairly short for an RPG, but if you've compared it to nocturne (albeit a tad easier), i'm sold.
