For the second time my old 40gig got itself the Yellow of Light of Death. I'm really kind of pissed. I don't want to have to go through the process of dealing with customer service and forking over the $150 to have it replaced by Sony. Seeing as this is the second time, and I've done my research, I feel like my entire gaming library - as well as downloaded content - is being held for ransom by Sony for what is clearly an issue with design.

I still look at it vs the RRoD as a percentage game, and I'll always take the lower pecentage.

150 USD isnt really all that much. I know thats not the point, but it isnt too much. And sony is holding anyhting ransom for anything. you pay 150 out which Im sure goes to shipping and processing both ways, and you get a new system and still have your catalog of games and account. now if sony made you pay for a new membership, and then either buy all your games again or pay an extra fee for them then i would be somewhat inclined to agree.

...

if you're just looking at this and comparing it ot microsoft's 360, the 360 has enough sales numbers from the years its been out and its popularity to cover this. If microsoft just came out tomorrow and said from now on we'll charge a fee for each time you get RRoD'd (rather than the warranty they do now) you'd realize what a deal sony gives you at only charging 150 when looking at the population at large.

Besides, you know this would happen and had you done research before getting it, you'd know they charge. You chose your bed, its time to lie in it.

No no it really isnt. The most common cause of it is actually people not taking care of their ps3s. Putting them in dusty places, not cleaning it, running it for long periods of time, etc. In other words the majority of the time its the users fault not the system. Do to the lower failure rate on the ps3s and this is a multiple occurance for you its even more likely that it is your fault.
Ah, no. I take care of my system. It's in a well-ventilated area in an air conditioned room. This isn't an isolated incident at all, and the issue is actually related to how the heat from normal use affects certain internal components.

It's not exactly something I knew beforehand, or was well known. Unlike Microsoft's highly publicized RRoD issue, the Yellow Light failure is not nearly as widely reported and is in fact swept under the rug by Sony. It is also my understanding that Microsoft once upon a time charged similarly for out-of-warranty repair services until customer outrage forced them to stop. Even if the Yellow Light were incredibly common, there is nothing that I have done to cause it - Sony caused it, and they should be the ones to fix it. I already paid for it to be fixed once, and obviously they did no such thing or else the exact same problem would not have occurred.

Then you didnt do research. I dont know when exactly I was told the YLoD was around 3% but wasnt all that long after the issue started popping up. Sony addresses it, tells you what the problem is, and says it will fix it, but it realizes its a business and needs to make money for such a gesture of good will (And in fact tehy take a loss for you). they could easily tell you to go buy a new PS3, we cant help you (which they are well within their rights if its out of warranty). But no, they say we'll give you another system with all your info still intact for a discounted price compared to both the cost of a new system and its competitor(s), taking a loss for you while doing so, because we care.

And, if you research they dont send you your system, they send you another system. you have the incredibly poor fortune to get a YLoD on two separate consoles.

And again, they are fixing it, so I dont see your complaint. MS caved when they removed their price, and that chalks up to a weakness in the company when viewing its public relation. But still they cost you time to get the system back (and give you a defective system that they claim is fixed but people get the same issue again in short time), and in fact can cost you money (either through an 80 dollar warranty plan or if its out of warranty they can say guess you have to buy a new 360 then )

Remember you're always free to switch. though you shouldnt blame a company just cause you dont do research on it, especially if it happens once and you are given the opportunity to research it having known it now exists. And when said company publicly admits (some) fault for it, and you choose to buy into it a second time. You choose to stay with sony, and you choose to give them a chance. Now you're paying for it. MS makes you pay to, but tehy make you pay time (and actually they also have warranty, its just theirs is 3 years, cause they acknowledge that they put out a shitty product. thats more of an insult to you that you actually took them up on 3 year warranty plan with a console that has such a high (relatively) rate of failure. But they can in fact refuse you and make you just buy a new system).

And no, Sony (or any other company with defective products) cant just say no one can report on a YLoD (or any other defective issue) and make it known, its illegal. If people choose not to report it, then thats on them for not deciding too. But research long enough and after the first YLoD (or even sooner if a tech magazine got a
