The re-release Integral or something had 2 CD's, because it included VR training maps and a bunch of other things.

And I could understand why you'd feel that way if you spent years being told how great it was by your friends, that kind of thing tends to happen. The hype effect, you know. Something gets built up as a monumental accomplishment of mankind, and when you finally experience it, especially if it's years after the fact, you're left underwhelmed.
Metal Gear Solid always came on two CD:s, even MGS4 refers to this at one point.

And just as an aside, I've only made it to the Fatman fight in MGS2, but I dont see why the internet has a big hate-hard-on for Raiden, aside from his voice being kind of obnoxiously high-pitched.
Players couldn't take being mocked by Kojima via the existence of Raiden.

A character who worships the idea of Snake and trained via virtual simulation, including a sim of the Shadow Moses incedent? Players moaning and whining about having to play as Raiden was hilarious irony to a completely ridiculous degree.

Hidden & Dangerous (I'd just like to point out that I've never heard of this one) - Tactical First/Third-Person Shooter PC game, received rather poorly on consoles (also, released a year later than MGS).
The console version of Hidden & Dangerous was literally a different game. It played and looked completely different to it's PC counterpart. The PC game was completely awesome and I'd definitely recommend giving it a blast if you like strategic squad-based gameplay.

Hmm...might have to go find a copy of it somewhere. This wave of nostalgia is killing me.

I love it.

And if it wasn't for that second sniper battle with Wolf and the fist fight with Liquid, which are frustrating as hell now, it would still be in my top 3 favourite games.

This was a game filled with wonderful little easter eggs, and there was a sense that more was going on behind the scenes beyond your initial mission. Certain codec characters, which throughout most of the game seemed only there to give you a tutorial or hints, suddenly became an integral part of the story. At the time I had never seen anything like this before. Add to that the Boss fight with Psycho Mantis, and you have game experience which was rivaled by none at the time.

I played it once or twice and really liked it but to me Tenchu was the better stealth game. Good presentation and gimmicks are nothing compared to a ninja simulator.

To be fair i`m not sure if i could play the original with same joy again since there`s much nostalgia behind these words. At least i know that i liked Tenchu way more than MGS.

I actually really enjoy the Metal Gear games so far.

It's disjointed, it's shizophrenic, it's mostly cutscenes, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but every game within the series stays loyal to established lore, continuously takes the piss out of itself and keeps you guessing as to what crazy thing Hideo Kojima thought of for the next encounter.
The final conversation with the Patriot AI at the end of MSG2 was actually pretty interesting, kinda doing a Bioshock twist before Bioshock, and not as smoothly executed.

That being said, MSG2 also abandoned what ties to realism MSG1 had round the second act of the game. Vampires, bullet repellant technology etc.

I treat the MGS series as visual novels instead of games, as the cutscenes and deep story are what drew me to it in the first place. The only two games in the mgs series that I really enjoy the gameplay in are MGS1 and MGS3 (playing MGS3 the other day and my god the gameplay is amazing, it is the only one other than 1 where stealth is the only option if you want to do well). I also love the exposition as well, it gives you a better understanding of the entire story if you follow it.

I think Kojima should've wisened up for MGS4 and caught wind of these new methods. Cause it seems like with MGS4, he's still stuck in the past. It doesn't seem like his way of conveying story changed at all from MGS1 to 4. And that's terrible.

I hope Ground Zeroes will be different.
indeed ^_^

Hopefully ground zeroes goes like peacewalker. Short, more to the point cutscenes, and all extra information/ weirdy stuff in the codec if you want it.

I guess having it portable MADE kojima change his storytelling style. people don't have 20 minutes to sit and watch XD
Storytelling like Peace Walker? Fine with me. Gameplay like Peace Walker? F**K THAT S**T!

1. Play game that was immensely well-received and groundbreaking when it was released. However, make sure said game was released 10-20 years ago.
2. Decide that, "No, this game isn't as great as everyone said it is, even though it was released 10-20 years ago."
3. Go on Escapist, post forum topic about how you're the "only one who thinks that ______ was overrated even though it came out 10-20 years ago."

Metal Gear Solid Snake, the first one, I guess I should have said the number since some people arent that familiar with the full name of it
I don't recall it ever having been called "MGSS" or "Metal Gear Solid Snake".

The thing a lot of people seem to forget is it's not just graphics, genres, and gameplay that has changed since 1999. It's the things they forget that just didn't exist before games like Half-Life, Metal Gear Solid, some others.

Lore, for example. Pre-dating the 'era' of MGS, how many games can you really think of that not only establish characters, locations, and events. But also call back to them so heavily, that it doesn't just become a story; It becomes a legacy. I can really only think of one: Castlevania.

"Storytelling like Peace Walker? Fine with me. Gameplay like Peace Walker? F**K THAT S**T!"

I think this proves there's two kinds of Metal Gear fans. I loved the first game and all the PSP outings but never thought much of 2-4. I honestly think the limitation of the PS1 and the handhelds kept Kojima a bit more focused on tight gameplay than the convoluted plot (oh their still convoluted as hell but significantly less so). At the same time there are people who much prefer the epic feel of 'guns of the patriots' to the more limited 'Peace Walker' so to each their own.

And is Metal Gear overrated? Probably. Like 'Final Fantasy 7' or 'Resident Evil' nostalgia kind of blocks out all the horrendous limitations the games were plagued with. The games that age better are usually simpler, that's why Dreamcast nostalgia is better if you play 'Marvel vs Capcom' and 'Space Channel 5' so you can keep blotting out the stiff controls of 'Jet Set Radio' and the godawful pacing of 'Shenmue'.

People use overrated for so many different things I'm not even sure what the definition is anymore.

A lot of people just really enjoy the series. You're one of the rare exceptions that dont. I dont know if it's because the story didnt click with you or what. But, yeah.
I find it funny that about an hour ago, I just finished watching a GameOverthinker which Bob himself said that overrated is a horrible word, simply because of how it is used.

@OP: MGS isnt actually overrated, but you are right about the massive amount of info that gets dumped onto the players at any point in time. Hell, I remember having something like a 20 minute Codec conversation. The MGS series does alot of things good, but that doesnt always mean good.

*Edit*

Wait... are we talking about the NES Metal Gears?

There were two more before it. I'm pretty sure it's just called Metal Gear Solid, not Metal Gear Solid Snake, pretty sure I read somewhere that the Solid is unrelated to Solid Snake.

Nah, but it's not a game for everyone I guess, but I found it amazing.

You dislike it, I love it. It comes down to taste. Yes it covers you in exposition, but some people feel immersion from it and some people feel like they're being drowning.

Really? I think it was the worst in the series, including the first one and probably the NES ones too, but the latter ones are probably just from nostalgia.
I never played Portable Ops though, so I can't say anything about that.

What was wrong with it? It fixed the camera and combat so it wasn't awkward anymore. No hiding bodies and crawling was a bit sad, but then you had the whole army building and upgrades to make up for it :)
