ok after seeing the Mass Effect 2 i went out and got the first one.
I just started playing it and i saw that there is a ton if side crap with the game
(including geth bases and Thresher maws (holy shit those things made me piss my pants when it pooped up next to me!) and finding rocks . . . . minerals) any how should i waist my life doing them or can i just skip and do the main campaign?

Urge to mock... rising...

Yes, waste your time with them. It's half the fun of the game!

But if you want you can skip them. I enjoyed them thoroughly, but I guess they're not for everyone.

There are about 7 quests for "Find X amount of useless shit" that you can skip. You get nothing really worth while other than an achievement and if your playing the PC version, there are no achievements.

All the other side quests are must do's, there are some really fun ones that you will miss out on by just rushing the main quest.

The side missions are all optional, though from what Bioware has said, i think if you do more side missions or handle them differently, you'll get different consequences if you import your character into ME2.
They said something along those lines. But they're all optional, they only help to increase level and get money and such.
There is a side mission on The Moon where you get to chose a 'Specialization Class' after completion of the mission.

The placement of that typo couldn't be any more perfect.

Some of them you have to do for an acheivable, but most won't have a large effect, a few side quests in the next game and maybe an Email or two at most. But I did them.

Personally, when I first started Mass Effect 1 a week ago, I decided "Hey. I'm gonna do everything I would do in a real life situation." I then proceeded to beat the game, only doing 3 or 4 side quests. I still loved every minute of it, but it didn't last very long.

Oh well, more of an excuse to play through as a large, scary man that despises life and everything in it.
