I loved the game and never considered it to be scary. The beginning, when you first enter Rapture and meet your first splicers(the enemies in the game), shook me up a lot, but when you realise you're pretty awesome with a shotgun the fear goes away.
There is a lot of jumpy moments though, but I consider it to be cheap shots and it leaves me more frustrated than scared.

No, it's not scary. And the way it presents itself and the plot twist and characters are so well done... Best plot twist in gaming I think.
The best thing is that it wouldn't work as a movie; the way the plot twist makes it feel so personal is because it's you playing. It doesn't feel like you're playing as a character; more like you have arrived in Rapture yourself.
That's why the twist is so effective.

It seems to be a love it and hate it kind of game. Try not to listen to all the hype and you'll probably love it. If you do listen to the hype, while some of it may be true, your imagination will still make it better than it can be.
But, it is a good game. Some nice twists and turns and a nice moral choice that you have to make early on and forever throughout the game. I should expect you'll enjoy it.

Why do you hate something more because it's popular? I hate Justin Bieber, but I don't hate him more because he's popular. For that I just hate the fans I've encountered being douches. Actually a great many of us agree with him. For story/atmosphere go ss2 or doom 3, for fps+rpg gameplay go dues ex or ss2 or for pretty graphics go crysis (also go crysis for good gameplay). I suppose given the rather low standard set by aaa games of late it is probably 'good[footnote]Above average.[/footnote]' in some aspects, but it certainly isn't great at anything.Frozen Donkey Wheel2 said:

R It wouldn't any more fair to label it as a bad game than it would to label it a fantastic game, it's pretty middle ground. It's certainly playable, but it's just not a game that every gamer should play (which, for some reason a great many people seem to be talking it up as).

On-topic, get Bioshock, but please don't overhype it. I really enjoyed it, even though I played it way after it had come out, knew the hype, and the ending. I loved it even then, and if I had played it when it first came out, I would have liked it even more.
