In regards to the OPs opinions on RE 4, 5, and 6, I actually enjoyed the first two and completely hated 6.
There's no denying that 6 was something that was approached at completely wrong and is the biggest scorn in the RE franchise.
In terms of RE 4, I believe that it is one of the best modern RE titles out there. I played it on the Wii, so the controls were a lot more refined and aiming was a godsend. It also allowed for exploration, upgrading, managing inventory, and provided interesting puzzles that were never too demanding or difficult. It also still invoked a good degree of fear (look up Regenerators for the hits) and the story worked well within this title.
I'll also agree that RE 5 utilized a lot of similar game mechanics as in RE 4. However, I find it to be a little inferior to its predecessor on different levels. The first is that it is a co-op title; there's nothing wrong with that, but games that are intended to be played as such cannot really work well unless approached in this manner. You definitely need a competent human Player 2 in order to truly enjoy the experience and for many, that can be an eyesore (*cough* Lost Planet 2 *cough, cough*). Your AI controlled partner is one of the worst out there and I don't know too many people that actually went very far with this option. The second is that your inventory is completely limited and managing your gear can be a nightmare; again, if you have a competent Player 2, this isn't an issue, but that damn AI will make you chug a Wiimote at the screen. Finally, the game is very dark and dreary (in terms of the colors and the environment). RE 4's environments were such because it in a mountain setting, cloudy, dark and stormy; so this worked out very well. But how can you make it as such in bright sunny Kijuju, Africa? RE 5 found a way.
