Soul Calibur 3 was a great exclusive on the system... of course... nobody plays that anymore.
I do, or rather I do with a friend. Soul Calibur 4 just broke too much so on the rare times he visits we always boot up 3.
Well that's good to hear. I always thought it was pretty neat they even released an arcade edition patch for the game. And "broke too much"?
Yeah the removal of move buffering shattered the flow of the game and made it much more "by the numbers" The first 3 had input buffering so why did they remove it. Of course for anyone who didn't use it then 4 will be ok.

Get Star Wars Battlefront and Star Wars Battlefront II. They aren't technobabel and they are pretty fun to play.

Also, if you are in for an obscure giant robot game, try RAD: Robotic Alchemic Drive. It has original controls and a half-decent story.

Manhunt is good for MATURE audiences, but it is really, really fun. Not only do you get to stab redneck biggots in the eye with glass, but you also get decent graphics and interesting sneak-in-the-shadows gameplay.

Sims 2 is for casual gamers mostly, but it is a good port of the PC favorite. It doesn't have alot of the things that the PC version has, like children or birth, but it has relations, character creation, and so on. You can build a one story house and enjoy blocking your characters into walls and watch them turn to ghosts.

Mercenaries Playground of Destruction is better than the sequel, and it is one of the best GTA clones ever. Honestly, get it and see how cool it can be. It even has cool cheat codes like a Han Solo and Indiana Jones costume cheat!

This is likely the best time to get a PS2 from a market perspective because it is the cheapest it has ever been to buy games and system hardware. Gamestop is full of the best titles and reviews exist for nearly every game so that research can be done. If you ever feel any sort of question rise about a game, you can just go to Youtube and watch reviews.

I hadn't thought of this. Maybe it's time I braved that game again after my utter puss-out the first time I attempted it.
For the love of god don't play the ones before 4 then! Resident evil 4 is a joke in terms of horror compared to the previous 3.

I dare you to play resident evil 3 and not shit yourself the first time you hear "STARS!".

Ratchet and clank games and Timesplitter series. There's also a now fairly rare game called Roadtrip Adventure, that was a really unique, interesting experience.

Don't forget PS1 games. You could play all of the Legacy Of Kain Games including the (albeit rarish) PS1 titles.

Shin megami tensei games have been reccomended already. But what about Digital Devil Saga? It's a brilliant and very original Sci-Fi setting. If you're into wierd interesting and "out there" Science fiction that isn't cleanly distinguishable from fantasy, then consider it!

The Thing I love most about PS2 is the compatability with PS1, DVD, and CD's... ah... the already vast library of the PS2 added with the huge library of classic PS1 titles... I only wish that the bloody PS3 played PS2 games. THat's the one and only reason I don't purchase that thing.

STOP! don't get any of those 3 games! ico and shadow of the colossus are being released HD when last guardian comes out and silent hill 2 is terrible.

instead, get persona 4, killer7, kingdom hearts 2 (and 1), and final fantasy x. these games are AWWWEESSOOOMME!

Anything with the SMT(Shin Megami Tensei) stamp will not disappoint.
As was said, Silent Hill 2 is awesome!
Also, the .hack// series are pretty fun and, in my opinion, pretty unique.

Good lord...your avatar.

Killer 7, Shadow of the Colossus, and Silent Hill 2 are the ones I think of, but I am sure they have already been mentioned, so...iNinja.

Sorry, but this statement renders everything else you have to say moot.

SH2 is the best of a great series. The controls and camera are practiced and smooth, the models and lighting are first rate, and most importantly the story is gripping. It is not just a nightmare. It's a truly dark psychological journey for a protagonist with a mature conflict who may or may not realize a complex catharsis depending on the players choices during the game.

SH2 is a monument to what the survival horror genre can be, and is without doubt one of the best titles ever released on the PS2.
the controls are awful, until you figure how to turn it into 2d mode, the camera is purposefully confusing (to create disorientation, and therefore fear). everything else for the rest of this paragraph, i completely agree with.

no SH2 is still terrible. it is incredibly tedious, boring, repeetitive, frustrating, and packed with filler. it is great as psychological horror, but its gameplay fails very hard, and it being a game and all, makes it terrible. one of the worst games i've ever played for PS2.

burnout 3
resident evil 4
the suffering
okami
we love katamari
manhunt
psychonauts
....thats all i can think of off the top of my head
there are more though...such a massive amount of games on ps2.

they still are better than most nextgen games

oh and MGS: Subsistence

and oh course ico, SOTC and silent hill 2...but that just goes without saying :)

EDIT: if you can get your hands on a copy of fatal frame...thats a pretty sick game also

The buffer was smaller but it was still there. (I think?) I honestly couldn't have played Taki without it. (Or could I?) Of course, they did do a lot more JF shenanigans with that one.

I'll always recommend:
Ratchet and Clank 1-3
Jak and Daxter 1-3
Red Faction for the lulz
GTA San Andreas
The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction
Sly Cooper 1-3
Killzone (I know most people didn't enjoy it, but I really love it. Squad Cannon ftw!)
