That's what I usually do when I am not playing a game. I use my imagination to progress in the storyline of whatever character I'm playing on at the moment.

That's the thing - we're well past the point of text adventures. This isn't pen and paper - it's TES. You shouldn't need imagination to fill in the flaws.

I did enjoy the game although the leveling system did make it drag on more than it should have, and going into Kvatch too early or too late did make things extraordinarily difficult. I may go back to it at some point, when I've had my fill of the oncoming holiday releases. So sometime next summer perhaps.

a thief has a hard time at the start off the game. But as a thief you should really try to backstab your way through most of the encounters. Once your sneak gets high and you get your hands on some chameleon items or spells you can open up with a short blade crit on most enemies which are pretty deadly.

I feel alot has improved since morrowind in the skill department. Graphics don't concern me to much aslong as it's not triangles, voice acting sucked.
The main pull for me about oblivion has always been the quests. Almost every quest really gives you the feeling they went out of their way to try to avoid cliché's and I think that if you allow yourself a little imagination roleplaying they can really draw you into the world as a whole

Personal roleplaying and imagination can give a personal touch and involvement in the world. Treat quests as experience and loot options and for all the cutscene's and conversation options in the world your going to feel like a murderbot in an alien world. The only person who can personalize an experience is you.

I hate that quote. People who install/make mods are people who can imagine how good a game can be. Even a game they think is phenomenal, they imagine a way for it to be even better. People who are against mods usually tend to be the ones who look down on anything without a logo/brand attached. Not only do professional game devs make mods in their off time, but modders sometimes get noticed by studios and hired due to their mods. I would say someone who refrains from mods are people limited in scope. After all, DLC/expansions are just mods.

People who want condiments on their food must not have any imagination either.

I've always enjoyed the idea of mods, and indeed many mods are great, but this is one of the aspects I've always hated. I tend to uninstall games when I'm done with them to save hard drive space, but every once in a while I get that inkling to play Oblivion or Skyrim again and I have to set aside a good couple hours the day before to reinstall all the mods so I have time to play afterwards.

Get the mods and pimp out your game the way you want. Otherwise, tough it out the vanilla way.

Easy peasy, I don't mind mods, mods can make a game a bit more fun or add fun things, BUT people that buy a game, play it for an hour and then HAVE to resort to mods and such that alters the game in a significant way without even playing the game that much, they are just wasting their imagination by letting other people mess with the game they bought. Might aswell sell the game if you're not going to play that game, but instead choose to change to game to something else to play it.

I'm surprised you played a lot of Daggerfall and didn't like Morrowind. I can understand liking Oblivion over Morrowind because of the dumbed down RPG mechanics, but Daggerfall and Morrowind were nothing but RPG mechanics. I suppose if you made a character with low athletics and a low speed attribute, you might find travel really boring as it was early game. Well, if you do go back, either stick it out (part of the fun is watching your character grow in every way, including running speed), or make a custom character that has high speed, strength, and athletics starting out. It will remove travel as a chore for first-time players.

I can understand that. I think you should give the game a fair chance before you go changing it, but mods can be great for ironing out the little faults that prevent you from liking a game. I found the first STALKER nearly unplayable due to some of the bugs and that damnable view-bob that made me sick. Mods fix these things, allowing me to enjoy what was an otherwise great game.

I can understand your point of view though. It's a shame when people might be passing up an experience they could really enjoy that's right there for them just because they immediately want to change everything about the game.

elder scrolls games are platforms for modding. they are pretty decent games to play vanilla, but its the modding that really makes them shine and become my favourite games

I still find that interesting that you came to that conclusion, because I love the dungeons in Morrowind. Every single one feels different than the last, and I can actually tell you which dungeon I'm in without needing a map. Granted, since they are all built from the same set pieces, there are massive similarities, but when I played Oblivion, every cave and dungeon just felt the exact same, even though they were built with the same principles. To me, every facet of Morrowind just feels hand-crafted, so I guess the dungeons are no exception.

idk, I guess that Daggerfall being sprite-based helped my suspension of disbelief more (with the game choices like the dice-rolling and shit)
also the movement speed in morrowind was horribly slow, more than King's Field, and that's saying something

I played Fallout 3, New Vegas, Shadow of Chernobyl and Crysis completely without mods
most of them where perfectly fine, except from Shadows of Chernobyl, in which I ran out of time for a quest due to a bug making the item appear in the ass-end of the Zone, and not where I was meant to find it
this is just the first time in which a game like Oblivion, in vanilla, is a chore to play
