So as I was browsing the greatness that is GOG.com, I found Arcanum: of Steamworks and Magick Obscura. I then learned that it's a steampunk version of Fallout that has Orcs with Tesla Cannons. Anyone have any experience with it? It's only ten bucks, so thought I'd give it a try.
Here's link for all y'all.

The combat is awful, but the world is brilliant. There's a LOT of freedom to do what you want but it's not always forgiving. Leaving the starter area and being mauled to death by a level 25 golden bear is possible, if unlikely. It's a great game. :)

Heard about it a lot, have bought it but not had time to try it out yet. It's a great game from what I've heard.

Yes, one of the greatest rpgs I've ever played.
One suggestion though if you do get it, play it with combat set to turn based (or faster turn-based if you prefer) not real-time, the real time is extremely unbalanced due to the fact that the developers didn't even want it but were forced to put it in.

Other than that though, Arcanum is really a game of specialization. If you want to be a techkie, specialise in technology. Like wise for magic.

All that is left to say is, Arcanum has one of the most complex stories ive seen in a game, along with one of the best villain speeches from the main bad guy.

Edit: Oh yes, also, forgive its bugs. The pros outweigh them.

That Sounds fabulous.
I have no problem with bugs. I've dealt with far bigger problems in games before (BC2 Server issues, Morrowind load timee, etc.)

I played it a long time ago. Its fun, definately get it and enjoy. I remember playing a Half-ogre with some starting traits that lowered his intelligence to 1. I named him somthing ogreish. However, after having been called dumb by so many NPC's, that game actually changed the name of the character in game to 'Dum'... He would introduce himself by saying "Hi, I'm Dum." which would often get the response of "you certainly are!"

He once had a conversation option of:
(There were no explainations in game, I quicksaved and these are what happened when I tried them all)

Uurh. (continued conversation)
Uurh? (Changed topic)
Uurh... (Ended conversation)
UURH!!!! (Attacked person)

It actually is my favorite RPG to date.

I agree with turn based combat from the start. Also, truly role play your charactor as the game is built with this in mind. Avoid trying to see "every possible dialogue situation". You can screw yourself. Alot of times doing person X's quest, botches person Y's. So it is good to go into the game with a personality in mind you plan to role play rather than just load it up and accept every quest/do everything. It can't be done. Don't be afraid to say no to quest givers and such. Then if you play through again, it doesn't take long before it feels like an entirely different story even though it is the same. (And I ain't just saying that. I once found myself on a prison island as a pit fighter and have never figued out how I got there.)

I am a fanboy of this game. They have a few things you can use for charactor development:

Good/Evil (typical morality)
Tech/Magick (They null each other out so its best to pick one)
Combats/Social (There is a middle ground here)

You will not get as many points to spend on your charactor as you would like in a game so if you truly wanted to see everything the game offers, it will take 3-4 playthroughs at best. Any RPG fan should have a copy of this game. Then remember that this game was released 12 years ago and just how little progress in dynamic worlds has been made. (Mostly due to the large demand of 3D environments IMO.)

Just note that by "Fallout", think more Fallout 1 than New Vegas. But considering it's by one of the splinter groups of Black Isle's demise, it should be a good game (even though I've never tried it).

I know, I actually went back and played the original Fallouts. Not Tactics, though.
Pretty impressive seeing as how I'm fourteen...

I wouldn't call it steampunk fallout more like tech baldur's gate. In either case Arcanum is awesome, if you haven't played it by now there's something wrong with you whippersnappers! Its a classic and everyone should have atleast tried it out. The combination of magic and technology and alot of other skills make for a unique experience. The atmosphere is well done, the storyline is quite good, the companions are an interesting bunch, the humour is delightfull - all in all a very good though outdated game.

My brother and I used to play this like crazy. When we left home, we split up our games, and he got arcanum and baldurs gate, and I got fallout 2 and morrowind. I miss arcanum so much right now.

Another theme in the game is racism, or perhaps speciesism would be more accurate.
Play as a half orc and you can expect most people to have a less then friendly initial reaction, where as playing as a half orge you won't get nearly much lip, if only for the fact that most half orges can easily cave peoples skulls in.

I was intrigued by the premise years ago but I could never get past the opening bit. Basically, it wasn't intuitive in the slightest and, seeing as I had plenty of other things to play at the time, I simply moved on.

Wow very cool, thank you for this. I have been a Fallout fan since the begining. I never even knew about this game, I am ashamed of myself for being out of the loop for so long...

Off to GOG I go!
