While not meaning to put words in the OP's mouth, I believe rhey're referring to a term, usually used in studies, called 'simulated drug and alcohol abuse', which, for the purposes of scaremongering/sensationalism is usually shortened into simulated drug use (since alcohol is technically a drug) or just drug use.

So I don't believe the above is saying that there's a cunningly hidden bit in the bible where Jesus and the disciples pass a crafty joint around, but, if you used the usual sensationalist 'journalism' style of, say, Fox news or the tabloid media, to build a case against the bible, Jesus turning water into wine could be portrayed as him being a drug dealer.

I don't really care because for all the "talk" of bans and sanctions on video games i don't think any ones ever pulled through to my knowledge in much more than a token way (and i assure you censorship of games is worse here in Australia). I may bastardise this story quote because some quite crass individual i know throws it at me whenever i try to get him to stop speaking "in a society like ours if you want the best of us to speak you must let the worst of us speak" he said the founder of hustler said it. but they are wise words all the same and no matter how much flak games weather they are a mode of expression and no democratic nation is bold enough(today at least) to say this demographic is denied the right to freely express themselves while others can.

With any type of media at all (movies, comics, books, music), I personally think it depends on the person who is viewing that media and how they take in and experience what they are viewing. In that sense anything can make anyone violent, if they view it in a way that can relate them to an act of violence. That doesn't mean things shouldn't try to stay away from areas that could awaken these emotions, because that's what makes viewing movies, comics etc worth doing so, to evoke an emotion.

Shouldn't? Not according to the Supreme Court. Doesn't? Not at all.

A lot of people seem misguided about the rating system. The fact is, it's entirely voluntary and willingly enforced by stores, but there is no legal mandate. Legally, you can sell R rated movies, M rated games, and just about everything but smokes, guns (not even true in some places), hooch and pornography.

But that really wasn't the point. The point was that the ban was attempting to do so solely on games, meaning it would still be legal for you to sell R-rated movies to minors. In short, human hypocrisy in action: Holding two "mature" examples to different standards. While the quote from Larry Flynt is nice, he's a pornographer, not a legislator. Though it probably means he lives a more wholesome lifestyle than one.

Performance art is held to a different standard. Even TV and movies are. The point being, it doesn't matter if other media is worse, games still get blamed in ways that other media is not held accountable.

of course its naive to believe in basic human goodness and logic but i'd rather that than assume every one was an asshole out to get me no matter how much in contradicted their own ideology.

Many perfromance art pieces were censored in Australia. (i think the public slaughtering of a cow outside a gallery?the conservative half of the world dosn't descriminate (much) between mediums. Led Zeppelin were barred from landing (for a short time) and Maus was barred from a gallery exhibit here in Australia, the Seven samurai has still to this day never screened in its entirety in Australian cinema. so thats Film, Music, Fine art and comics in the last 50yrs)
