subscription or f2p doesnt really matter to me (disposable income ftw!)

what am I after? something I can really sink my teeth into. My favourite ever (readies flame shield) was Runescape. *hides*

I guess I loved the freedom, not being shoe horned into quests and just doing whatever I wanted whenever I wanted to do it

a close second was Atlantica Online mainly due to the uniqueness of the game compared to others I have played.

sooooo... any MMOs out there that by some miracle combine both of the above?

OR

are there any other decent MMOs you guys love?

Hmmm I'd suggest World of Warcraft since it has a lot of stuff to do as well as grind grind grind, plenty of other jobs n all that like fishing and herblore.

Dofus/Wakfus is also a recommendation if you don't mind the "kiddy" graphics, a personal favorite of mine.

And that's all I can think of right now.

Runescape was also my favourite. I've yet to find anything since that even compares to it.

I'd say go for Guild Wars 2, no ridiculously overpriced subscription fees and the developers really did a great job with it.

Well you could try tera, its really not a bad game at all and is dropping its subscription fees in February. It offers a very different experience to GW2 and not necessarily a worse one, depending on your preferences. The combat is highly skill based but a little bit too sticky for my tastes. You could also try RaiderZ for a very similar experience to tera, its completely free to play.

[HEADING=3]RIFT![/HEADING]

Rift didn't originally look that great to me, but it turned out to be my favorite MMO to date. Now, my opinion of the game is from about a year ago. Some of this info may be outdated...

The classes all have a lot of depth, and they can all fulfill a lot of different roles. Rogue tank, mage healer, etc. It varies from class to class, but from what I experienced in raiding with the cleric, you have a lot of different builds you can use to heal/tank/dps in vastly different ways. People even came up with some unexpected ways to heal. Back when I played, I ran as a justicar raid healer. Justicar was typically thought to be a tanking/AoE damage build, but players turned it into a very potent raid healing spec.

The one gripe I had was that the art direction was kind of bland & uninspired when it came to armor sets. A lot of the armor sets looked pretty plain, but it got better with time. And it's probably a lot better now. But I had more fun playing Rift than I have playing any other MMO to date, and I've played 'em all. (Almost literally.) The grind to 50 is also pretty easy. Or, it was for me. So you can get right into raiding/high level dungeons if you want or take your time & explore. I liked that.

Try Firefall, it's a pretty neat MMOFPS, with a decent FTP system. I've recently started playing, and it's the most impressive MMO I've ever played. Then again, I haven't played them all.

Free exploration? Lots of things to do and see? I'd recommend Vanguard honestly. Huge open world. Lots of quests and dungeons. Plenty of activities that aren't related to adventuring. One of my favorite MMO's to date.

Well I'm personally really looking forward to playing The Elder Scrolls Online, but since that one isnt out yet it's hard to recommend it until we know if it's as good as they're promising.

EVE Online. If you want freedom in a game, EVE is pretty much the best there is. There are over 5000 star systems up now available to players (which makes for a freaking MASSIVE game world), a 100% player-run economy, a single "realm" hosting all players (so it's common to see 50000+ players online at the same time in the same game world) and you can pretty much do whatever you want.

Want to spend months climbing the ranks of one of the biggest corporations in the game, gather your own supporters inside the corporation and finally stage a massive coup inside that game that ultimately results in you running away with the equivalent of about 200k $ worth of in-game stuff while blowing up one of only 7 (at the time) massive Titan-class ships? Nothing stopping you. In fact it's very much within the game rules.

Want to spend hours desperately searching for safe routes in nullsec space while escorting a massive mining ship full of valuable ore being hunted by pirates? EVE's got you covered.

Want to spend hours hunting down fat, slow mining ships full of valuable loot and squishy lives while at the same time trying not to fall pray to stronger pirates yourself? EVE's got you covered.

Want to spend days with hundreds of other players laying siege to another corporation's space station? EVE's got you covered.

Want to join a squad of your corporation's elite fighters and hunt down some reckless fools who dared trespass in your territory? EVE's got you covered

Want to spend some quality time breaking down asteroids in highsec space, safe under your empire's protection? EVE's got you covered

Want to team up with other people in order to clear and loot wormholes with an assortment of vessels from powerful battleships to small, fast ships rigged only for salvaging loot? EVE's got you covered.

That being said, EVE can be incredibly boring and slow paced.

I reccomend Guild Wars 2 and World of Warcraft. One is f2p and the other is subscription so you can play both. Also, don't touch SWTOR with a 31 and a half foot pole. The reason I say that is, 1. It doesn't really have the freedom you want, and 2. I don't think Biowzare should be rewarded for turning a really good rpg series into this. Also, the f2p modle sucks.

I'm really, really looking forward to ArcheAge. It sounds like it'd fit the bill for you (exploration & freedom in what to do.) Their whole pitch is that you can do whatever the hell you want. No fixed classes, you can mix and match skill trees as you please (which they advertise as "120 unique classes.") Apparently players will be able to modify the world a lot, to the point where they're saying every server will end up really different as a result.

Open-world PVP, including faction-based warfare over castles where players can use siege weapons. Players can own land and build houses, farms, etc, they can run trade caravans or sail trade ships. They can also build warships and fight on the ocean, and apparently piracy is totally possible/viable. Buuut about crime...

Murdering and stealing are part of the game, but criminals accrue crime points if/when evidence of their crimes is discovered. Too much crime, and you're put in front of a jury of players who decide how long you go to jail based on your criminal history.

Anyway yeah. I haven't played it yet, but I'm super excited. It's prolly coming to NA/EU sometime this year.

I recommend Guild Wars 2. From my experience, it's very much an open world game with different ways to play and different ways to level up (speed and mileage of leveling varies, though. Some methods are slower/faster than others). Also, quests are there, but you don't have to do any of them, if you don't want to. Also has no subscription fee, so once you get it, you can pick up another MMO if it can't hold your attention for long enough.

WOW will give you the most content depth and probably the cleanest mechanics. It is, alas, really starting to show it's age, but it's still the most populous MMO.

GW2 will give you the most pleasant leveling experience, at the cost of the most shallow end game. It has a pretty friendly business model, so it's easy to walk away from and come back to when the mood strikes.

TOR has a very pleasant leveling experience as well, if you like story, although the combat mechanics are a bit dull, and the FTP model is a bit questionable. Unlike GW2, the end game isn't shallow...it's just not very good.

EVE is another long standing incumbent game with a gentrified player base and a ton of depth. It can be pretty hard to get into as a newcomer, though, and you'll have a long road ahead of you to become competitive.

RIFT is a bit of a dark horse...it has a pretty rich feature set and lots of content to go with handsome visuals, but is a curiously inert game and has a pretty small player base.

Since you want something 'you can really sink your teeth into', I would look hard at WOW, RIFT and EVE.

If the ability to do what you want when you want to do it with little to no pressure is your priority over heavy depth, look at GW2.

I've played a lot of MMO's, and I would definitely say that World of Warcraft is not what you want. The whole game is basically a series of quests to level, and then a series of daily quests to grind requisite reputations. I have played a little Guild Wars 2, and there is more freedom to accommodate different playstyles. I'd say give that a try, or even Rift.

Um yeah, Runescape was just a dumb-ed down version of Ultima Online for web browsers. Play the real game, I spent seven years in UO

World of Warcraft. It's the default answer but its still the biggest (modern) MMO. (Go away Daggerfall fans, I don't care). Guild Wars 2 does some cool stuff that is good for the MMO genera (is that the right word?) as a whole but sputters when you hit the end game stuff.

"so I've got free time and need somewhere to waste it." Kidding mostly, but it sounds like The Secret World or GW2 would be perfect for you.
