So I'm getting an Xbox...

I've been gaming on a PC pretty much all my life now, I don't think I've ever actually owned a console before (played on plenty, owned none). But now my brother's selling me his one for cheap since his company decided to give their employees Xboxes and Kinects (lucky for some, eh?), I figured I might as well take the opportunity. For some context, I'm a student (second year) living in halls.

So, I'd like some advice on:
- getting the Xbox to work with my monitor (hp w2216), since I won't have a tv in my room
- general technical Xbox advice
- most importantly, GAMES. I predominantly play RPGs and fighters, and since I already have a PC, there's not really much point in getting games that are also on the PC.

Um, I hate to sound like a fanboy, or shoot you down, but getting an Xbox isn't the best idea at the moment. The system is losing momentum and a surprisingly swift rate. I suggest you either forget about consoles altogether, or get a PS3, both work.

-Completely depends on the monitor. Won't be able to tell you a thing without some more info.

-Best to keep in well ventalated, clean the area around it often (to stop dust build-up)

This may also help:

Well it was really only because my brother's selling for cheap, I'd never really planned to get a console, and he really doesn't want to go through the hassle of selling it online, so I'm kind of doing him a favour as well.

Yeah, I realise it was a bit silly not to include the monitor specs. It's a hp w2216.

By all means go for it. Yes it's losing momentum as HassEsser says, but there are still great games to play (just because it's losing momentum does not mean older games stop beeing fun to play.)

To get it to work on a monitor you might wanna get a HDMI monitor, then connect the xbox with the supplementary HDMI cable to said monitor (it's easy, the port should say "HDMI" or something along that lines.)

I you like RPG's and fighters,
RPG's
Oblivion (sorry, am a fanboy, is required :V)
Final Fantasy.
are the ones I own.

For fighters, look in the direction of Mortal Kombat. I tend to have fun with that.

Now if I may suggest some others,
Red Dead Redemption
Halo (manditory shooter for the xbox I think?)
Dante's Inferno (Ill piss people off, but basically God of War's equivallent on xbox.)
Fable series (if you are into that sorta thing, it's a mixed opinion thing.)
Give Assassins creed series a try if you like prancing around.
I suppose that Borderlands is also allright.

For general Xbox Advice, get a chargerkit and screw batteries really. Don't get Xbox live gold unless you actively play online games with other people, don't get into the CoD / Battlefield discussion. Buy a cheap-o xbox headset first instead of an expensive one, who knows how much you will use it right?

Hope that helped :)

edit & p.s. Keep a widow open when playing. It tends to generate quite some temperature. That or I get a bit overclocked during gaming myself x3

Well then I guess I'll step in on the game front since nobody has yet to do so. RPG's and fighters you say?
On the RPG front I would recommend Lost Odyssey and Tales of Vesperia on the Japanese front(Star Ocean too if you're into that) and then I would give you some from the western side of things, but most of those are available on the PC. For fighters I've heard The new MvC is pretty good, but I'd probably wait until they release their new one. Myself, I've always enjoyed Blaz Blue. Well that's all I can think of off the top of my head.

Oh trust me, that shouldn't be a problem with the winter coming and how cold our rooms get!

Yeah, I'm definitely waiting for Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3. If I have Blazblue: Calamity Trigger (the first one) on the PC, is it worth getting the latest one?

That one has a VGA port right? Then I don't think it'd be a problem. All you'd need is a VGA cable (I'm not sure if you have to buy the official ones, or just any old brand. I think the xbox ones have extra adapters for sound.) and then choose the resolution that is closest to your monitor.

Also, the Xbox tends to heat up a room pretty quickly. So if your radiator ever beaks, you know where to go ;)

Provided the monitor has a VGA port, you can buy a SCART -> VGA cable. It works perfectly, it's what I'm doing.

Congrats? I don't know what kind of monitor you have so I can't say, "Yup that'll work." I use my xbox for multiple player fps and my ps3 for solo games. Then again, I may just be a weirdo.

Grats.

Sorry I cant help with hooking up to monitor, I've never attempted that. As far as technical concerns unless you get a pretty early generation and you keep it well ventilated you really dont have much to worry about.

Forget what that obvious ps3 fan-troll was saying, There's no indication that xbox has lost momentum.

Games: Lets see, RPGs and Fighters, The last RPG I played was FFXIII and most of the good rpgs on xbox are not exclusive, mass effect/oblivion ect. The fighting line up isn't too bad with SSFVI in its many versions, Marvel Vs Capcom, Blazeblue, and a slew of classic/remixed fighters on the arcade. They just released SF3 third strike on the arcade. I like the arcade fighters a lot because its fun to play those games online.

Now, if you are willing to break out of the RPG/Fighter there's a couple of pretty solid games that are exclusive to 360.

Dead Rising
Dead Rising 2
Left 4 Dead
Left 4 Dead 2
Alan Wake
Viva Pinata (yes, seriously)

Also there's the arcade, Which I've had alot of fun with. (some of these probably not exclusives but just games I've enjoyed on the cheap from the arcade)

Limbo
Braid
Trials HD
Splosion man
Shadow complex (modern metroidvainia)
Toy Soldiers
Toy Soldiers Cold War
From Dust
Bastion
Magic The Gathering Duels of the Planeswalkers
Magic 2012

Ignore the haters, enjoy your new xbox.

You could just buy an HDMI cable off of Amazon and just hook the 360 straight up to the monitor, it's what I've done a couple of times.

For that monitor, you'll either need a VGA cable or a HDMI cable with a HDMI to DVI adaptor on one end, depending on what port your computer is plugged in to and what port on your monitor is free.

You'll also need the X-Box 360 audio dongle (it should come with your 360) and some audio cables to connect your 360 to an external speaker source/headphones (or your monitor if it has audio inputs), as neither the VGA or HDMI via DVI will carry audio.

As for games, it's really down to personal choice, so if you've got X-Box Live then you should just download demos and try them out, but I can wholeheartedly recommend Red Dead Redemption, particularly the soon to be released GOTY edition.

Games: (To me anyway)
Halo, any. Up to you.
Tom Clancy's End War. Best RTS on the console.
Gears of War. We all need gore in our life.
Dead Space. Best horror game on the 360.
L.A Noire. A good game that does well without the game being 65% shooting.
Red Dead. Awesome free roam game set during the time of the fall of cowboys and the rise of the government(boo).
Oblivion. Best RPG on the console.

About all of I can think of right now.

I just had a look at your monitor, and you'll need a 360 AV to VGA cable [http://www.xbox.com/en-AU/Xbox360/Accessories/CablesNetworking/xbox360vgahdcable]. All you really need to know about your 360 is to avoid putting it upright no mater how much Microsoft want you to (I've just never liked the idea of a fragile console sitting upright), never move your console while it has a spinning disc in it, try to keep it in an open space and don't cover up any of the vents. Installing games you play regularly on the hard drive is a good idea as the fans and disc tray won't have to work as much.

Here's some upcoming good games for your console:

Gears of War 3, Arkham City, BF3 (though you may want to buy it for PC) and Saints Row The Third.

If you don't already have some of these titles for PC, then buy them for 360 now!

I've got all of the current generation systems (just saying for perspective) and prefer the Xbox 360, but don't buy one right now, like a lot of these guys said it is in an awful state.
