Yeah so i'm 22 years of age , been amoking for 3 years , and today for the first time i want to quit , people always say that quitting soking is hard . I wouldn't know because this is the first time i try to quit . So any advice for me ? I'm not going to take patches or whatever the new product for quitting sokim , i'm going to try to do it with old fashioned willpower ( what will power still exists in 2011??) . I used to smoke half a pack a day and i'm going to quit cold turkey . So what to and not to do would be appreciated , and online support is cool too .
my advice is to not smoke

Mate,

You aren't even an addicted smoker, you could happily stop any time you like. 10 a day is a social smoker , you are actually mocking the afflicted here. The real addicts (like me) don't have it so easy. Stop now before you are a real smoker ! And the worst critics of all smokers are the ex smokers so go easy on the hardcore smokers once you've quit burning your money :)

Stop now before it's too late :)

OT : thanks for the awsome advice , a lot of your posts made me laugh and kept me busy during my lunch break at work , so i managed to not smoke thanks to this thread and your posts .

I'm not a smoker, so I can't be much help but I did help my mum several times.
Don't quit cold told turkey, cut down then you'll eventually quit.
Try nicotine gum and inhalers too. Or just something to keep your hands and mouth busy (giggity! xD)
Oh, and I heard covering your cigs in milk makes them taste disgusting, so you won't want to smoke them.

Why quit? Just reduce it.
Cigs can be a good thing if used in moderation
Oh, this will be great.

Please explain to me how cigarettes are 'good' in moderation?
Well they do relieve stress, but that is all I know about positive effects. Maybe there is something else BLAHwhatever knows that I don't.

And my advice is to throw them all in a bin. Buy a load of chewing gum/mints or other snacks that take a while to finish. It will keep your mouth busy.

Just find something to replace cigarettes. My mom quit with Tic-Tacs, and she hasn't smoked for 9 years. You can also find a strong motivation to stop. My dad went cold turkey just because he refused to believe that one of his idiot co-workers, who had also went cold turkey, had a stronger willpower than he did. He hasn't smoked for about 4 years.

See, that's the common misconception about nicotine.

Once you start smoking, you use cigarettes to 'relieve stress'.

You're not actually relieving stress, you're relieving the symtpoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Instead of spending money on a pack of cigarrettes, try to spending it in a gift for someone, or just save it to buy something more than a pack of cigarrettes (NO, not a box of cigarrettes, think harder).

Good luck, dude. I've been thinking about it, but I honestly don't think I'm up to the battle.

Get a straight jacket and lock yourself in a completely isolated place that way you won't even have the choice of smoking

Start with quitting cigarettes. I'd recommend some nicotine replacement products or look into Champix. Then when you don't crave the need for a cigarette anymore and you're on the lowest strength of NRT - substitute it for mints or tic tacs or something you like. It gives you something to do and distracts pretty well.

It's what I did.

But I was able to go without cigarettes for days if I didn't think about it.

Alternatively, buy a couple of games to take up your spare time. Avoid alcohol. Play for a week or so. Avoid people who smoke. Avoid people in general. You might end up speaking about cigarettes. The first week is usually the hardest time. Go cold turkey. You don't smoke a huge amount. It will be easier for you.

I'm in my late twenties and smoked for around 14 years (scary huh?). I haven't smoked for 4 months now because I've been using an E-cigarette when I feel the urge, I'm sure you've heard of them but I can't recommend them highly enough. They may have quite literally saved my life.

-Don't make it chore, make it a choice.

-Also, if you happen to fall in don't beat yourself up over it or "punish" yourself for it. Just continue at your attempt at stopping.

-When you really, REALLY want a smoke, eat an apple, drink a glass of water, have a piece of gum etc instead.

-Get rid of ALL the ashtrays and lighters in your home.

When I stopped smoking last year, during the first month or so I basically replaced my cigarettes with chewing gum. Not nicotine, just regular old gum.
Kicking the mental addiction is harder than the physical addiction so far as I know, so you'll probably need to trick yourself a bit.
Carry a pen or a straw around to hold between your fingers or chew a bit on, substituting the cigarette with something non-addictive and non-deadly is usually a useful trick during the first weeks/months.

But yeah, as someone already said 3 years really isn't that much, I had been a smoker for around 14 years when I quit and didn't have any major problems with it so you should be fine.

Also, if you decide to look into smoke-stop aids, have a look at Neurolinguistic Programming. Its basically a combination of suggestion/coaching methods and its probably both healthier and a lot cheaper than the bullshit medicine that the medicine industry will try to sell you. Like Champix ;)

Get rid of all cigarettes, when in store don't buy new ones. If a friend offers one smack him on the head. If you feel so crappy you need one RITE NAO, go to bed instead.

Find something to keep your hands and mouth busy. I chewed ice for awhile and it helped, but it eventually hurt my teeth bad. So then I started chewing gum, LOTS of gum. I picked up my guitar again and trained myself to do that rolling thing you can do with pencils/pens. Kept them occupied.
