so I've been noticing more and more old comrades on the site getting very close or getting outright banned. I kind of feel like this banning system is kind of flimsy and needs improvement.

how would I improve it.

1.The politics and game industry sections should only give warnings on more extreme: things in their are going to get heated and because we are humans we fuck up. I understand there already a little relaxed but most of the warnings and banned still come from those two places.

2. add one or two stages into the progress bar: I feel like something like 10 would be a little better

Just some ideas I have because the amount of people that are getting banned is starting to become a little scary.

also I talked to some the moderators about making this thread. they told me it's okay but I shouldn't be surprised if people turn this ugly. So try to keep it civil

ps. Sorry for poor spelling

The system is already more lenient than I would make it, personally. If anything I would crack down more on the horseshit that goes on here. Also, if you think a topic will make you lose control of your tact maybe you shouldn't post in it. I don't see any reason why being an asshole in one thread should be any different than being one in another.

Let me just address your two points:

1] If only warnings were ever given and nothing else, then they would carry absolutely no weight whatsoever. There would be nothing stopping someone from getting infinite warnings, and never changing their behavior.

2] Adding more blocks to the health meter is nothing more than delaying the inevitable and extending the rope attached to the noose.
Call me cold and callous if you must, but it's true.

Don't get me wrong, there's an extraordinarily large number of questionable infractions given out all the time, but very few of them are bans. And the bans that seem really dodgy and suspect are usually lifted through appeal.
From appearances, the moderators don't seem to take much care when handing out warnings (my more-than-dozen overturned warnings are a testament to that), but to give the moderators credit they usually take MUCH more care when handing out permabans. And for that I am grateful.

There are certainly some changes and improvements to be made, but OP, I don't think your suggestions would make much of a difference.

I'm Dumb when it comes to these issues. I just want to get everyone else's thoughts on these practices.

The point is to warn, not punish. It's like asking the police not to stop you to tell you you're speeding.

2. add one or two stages into the progress bar
What lesson will you learn by warning #9 that you shouldn't have already learned by warning #7?

once again I am dumb. I was just asking people's thoughts on our current system.

How many times has a thread in Off Topic been made to ask for suggestions to the current moderation techniques?

And how many times has that been effective and noticed by the Staff?

The answer may surprise you!

Please direct any complaints or suggestions about the Moderation to the Community Manager ffronw or use the Contact Form [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/contact/] and suggest "Feedback" or "Posting/Moderation Issues".

P.s I don't remember being asked or told about this thread, sorry.

I think the moderators are generally more lenient on people now, possible more than they've ever been before.

1.The politics and game industry sections should only give warnings on more extreme: things in their are going to get heated and because we are humans we fuck up. I understand there already a little relaxed but most of the warnings and banned still come from those two places.
I disagree entirely. I think it would set a bad precedent to hold some users to a different standard of behaviour like that, particularly after all the verbal warnings already stickied atop the forum and posted in the mod group. From what I've seen, the majority of the warnings do indeed come from those places, but the people who continually enter threads and argue or insult one another should be aware of the risks beforehand. Disagreeing with someone is not a reason to insult them.

2. add one or two stages into the progress bar: I feel like something like 10 would be a little better.
I think that would also set a bad precedent, as you'd have people trying to game the system and remaining in the forums longer than they currently do. Johnny Novgorod put it pretty well. The chances are that when someone's reached level 7 or 9 in a short enough period of time, they don't care much about their conduct and the only significant difference made by further warning levels would be how long they stuck around - meaning an extension to the aforementioned arguments and insults.
