I once saw a show called "My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding". Anyone who has seen it or has much experience with travelers in real life would probably agree that if they all drove their Winnebagos off a cliff, nothing of value would be lost.
However, here in America we would just call them homeless. Most of our crazy religions stay in one place and use their sweet tax exempt status to troll everyone.

Some of the fuckers brick the caravans right onto the ground, build actual fucking houses. But they're still "travellers" 'cos they own a caravan. Takes the piss.
In Augusta, GA in the United States, the traveler women, including children and toddlers, all put on pounds of makeup and wear trashy clothes, ie uber tight clothes, cheetah print, 4 inch heels. The men are all basically dressed in a uniform of a colored plaid shirt and jeans with the same haircut. I've got nothing against them personally, but it sure is a strange, visually disturbing culture.
Around here they're notorious for going to the movie theater in droves and stealing things and attempting to seduce men, but I've never seen it, so I'm skeptical of those accusations.

In the US, Gypsies are kind of a historical stereotype. About the only time you hear about them is if some period horror piece needs a fortune teller. I know on an academic level that they still exist in Europe, but I know next to nothing about them.
I have never thought about it until now, actually. I'm so used to being white-washed with western ideas, that I forgot that gypsies and the like still existed.
I think that kind of lifestyle can offer more educational benefits than of a rooted home. Not to mention, you learn from more than a couple of people on a daily basis. That is not to suggest that the traveler's lifestyle seems superior to me in every way -I mean, there has to be more health issues, right?
I think that you have every right to be concerned for your niece, and I also find it sweet. However, I think that gypsies have a different mentality than what we are used to collectively. I think that she will find a lot of support amongst those she is traveling with. I think this because they have all been in a compromising situation before. If it is one thing that nomads seem to be skilled with, it is adaption.
As long as she is surrounded by positive attitudes, I'm sure she will be just fine. She may even find a nice gypsy to marry.

I am indifferent towards the Gypsy/traveller community. I've only had limited dealings with them, not enough to form a first-hand opinion anyway. An old lady (Romani I think) once cursed me for not buying a lucky sprig of heather wrapped in tin foil...to keep the luck fresh I suppose...

I've never really encountered any travelers. I have really only heard about them through other people and while the stories are not great I have never been one for for judging people by stereotypes.
Awesome! Maybe he can teach you how to control warp fields with your mind too! Just be careful about letting your mom watch you practice that one or it may grant her wishes that try to kill her somehow.

I live in Australia so I'm not very experienced with gypsies, but when I was in Europe I was constantly harassed by them, and even had an old gypsy woman spit in my face when I didn't give her money, so I can't say that in my experience I liked what I saw of them, but I'm sure they all can't be like that.
Hm... you got me curious. I've honest-to-God never heard of modern-day travelers like these. I knew they were around oh-so-long ago, but never had a clue they still existed. Call me sheltered, but I've never lived outside Idaho, and never seen these kinds of people.
Where (continentally) do they reside? Is it mostly in the European nations, or are they around in other parts of the world? How do they live with their traveling lifestyles? Education, employment, food, etc must be hard to get if you're moving around a lot. It sounds like the stigma for them is pretty much universally bad, but obviously there's an occasional good egg in the bunch.
