I've expressed interest in doing some RP here in the past, but I've never really pursued it. I'm an avid tabletop gamer and used to do forum RP a lot in high school so you'd think I'd be all over the scene here. The problem is... well, I don't really know where to start. For those of you who frequent the RP section a lot I ask you: how do I get my feet wet around here? Every time I check most everything I am even remotely interested in seems to be closed indefinitely.

I need an advocate! I need a sensei!

As a user of the RP forum for over two years, I've got to agree with SomeLameStuff, I recommend lurking around some of the new threads until you find one that interests you. That's how I got into it, I just joined one that sounded good and got stuck in, ended up becoming GM when the original GM resigned, that happened again recently too. A fair warning you will need patience as not every RP survives for long and you will always get some fellow players dropping out, guaranteed.

Yeah, I remember similar issues back in when I used to RP on other sites. It's not too big a deal.

I'll be happy to answer any questions you have but to be honest you should be ready to go since you've had experience on other sites.

Yeah, my problem is just getting started here in general. Maybe I just don't check for new threads often enough.

You need a master! A game master! :p

Yeah, I don't have much to add. I checked RP our quickly a while ago and it seems that patience is all it takes - just lurk for a while and otherwise works just like any other RP forum.

Best thing you can do is just lurk around until you find an open thread you like and submit a sheet. New threads pop up pretty regularly. And in cases where the thread is "closed," it never hurts to sent a PM to the OP and ask. Sometimes they might put your character on "reserve" to fill any vacancies later on. The worst thing that could happen is that you get a "No."

I did do an RP here once. It was really good until it ground to a halt after a few weeks, and there haven't been any others that I've seen that pull me in. Since then I've entertained the idea of setting up one of my own, but I don't know if I have the time. Being a GM looks like a lot of hard work, and how many people you should get involved with the RP is a delicate balancing act. Too many people, and it becomes impossible to manage. Too few, and the post rate is so low that the story moves at a snails pace and everyone loses interest (I think that's kind of what happened with the one I was in).

If you have any ideas for a story you want to do, you can PM me if you like :). I have more free time now than I did back than so I could help you out and be co-GM if you wanted, and it would be nice to get back into the habit of writing stuff on a regular basis again, seem as I'm off to do Creative Writing at Uni this Autumn.

I used to RP a lot, now I just hang around in there to read stuff and play Serial Killer [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/540.398095-Serial-Killer-Round-46-Burn-the-Witch] (Which you should totally join, since a new round just started! :D) Though, it's more of a cross between a roleplay and a forum game... most of the role playing is when you're writing your death.

Otherwise, you can always ask around people you know and see if they're in any RP's, and whether there are any open spots. Some of my very first RP's were with people I already knew, so I didn't feel as bad when I made any beginners mistakes (though if you've done this before like you said, then you should be fine!)

Or, like the other guys said: Camp it out and leap in like a tigress!

I've done a lot of GMing for tabletop, but it wasn't really a thing in the RPs I did in forums back in the day. Someone generally would come up with the rules and setting and that was kind of where their GMing ended. I'd love to do one with you, but I am not entirely sure what level of control/responsibility a GM is supposed to have in a forum roleplay.

I guess it varies depending on the individual and the subject matter. From what I gathered I think the RP I was involved in was quite strictly managed by forum standards, but I didn't personally have much of a problem with that. Be as strict or otherwise as you want to be (although, I'd be inclined to be wary of giving the players too much freedom, because you don't want your RP to burn itself out in 3 days because everybody's characters have gone God-Mode in a contest to see who's the most awesome. Mind you, the RP I was in involved supernatural powers, in a more down to earth premise that wouldn't be as much of a problem).

I know exactly what you mean. I used to do a lot of super hero related stuff and it would only become a problem when people didn't understand how comic books stories work. It's never a "who's the most powerful contest" as most comic fans will tell you. Even the strongest characters can lose.

In any case I'd feel kind of weird being a GM here before I was a player, but I'd be willing to co-GM if you were the actual GM :p

I'll get brainstorming then, and if I have any ideas that I think are even half-decent I'll run them by you to see what you make of them. :)

Sounds good to me. I am a never ending wellspring of crazy story ideas, so just give me a theme or a genre and I can start helping you out XD

Just check out that section everyday as there often a new RP open since sooner or later you will find one that interest you. Also make sure you really the OP rules properly.
