so starting D&D, need advice

so me and one of my friends are starting a D&D group with a few other friends (although tbh im not confident they will stick to it) but assuming our group does decide to stick with it and maybe even attracts other friends what kind of things will we need to buy?

my friend (who will likely become our DM) has brought the Starter set (4th edition) so what would you guys advise we buy afterwards if we continue to play it?

You'll need a dice set consisting of at least 1 d20, d12, d10, d8, d6, and d4 and it couldn't hurt to buy a notebook to keep track of key events in the story and create your character sheet on, because real men use lined notebook paper.

Be sure that not too many people join in. I remember playing a kick down the door campaign at the university with about eight or nine people and it was not an enjoyable experience, neither for players, nor for the DM. Around four people is ideal, in my opinion.

Oh yeah, and make sure at the very least one person (preferably the DM) knows the (basic) rules by heart. You don't want to have to look up the manual for every little thing.

If it's D&D I'd say a few more of d6 and d4 wouldn't hurt. Also you can download pre-made character sheets.


On an unrelated note, have D&D threads been popping out more often than usual lately or does it only seem that way? Also why does it always have to be D&D? Why are there never threads about WoD or DSA or any other pen & paper RPGs?

Depending on the setting, try not to get too exotic with your character class. Fighters and Rogues work great most of the times; Wizards and Mages might sound fun (on paper), but they are harder to pull off...

Make sure your DM has actually played a few games first, although I've never played D&D before, [but really f---ing want too] every I know who has says that is most important advise.
