Hey Y'all. Let's talk about cartoons. Specifically, the newest (i think) Cartoon Network show, Steven Universe. What do you guys all think about this show? Like, or very like?.. there isn't any other option is there?
Personally, I'm not 100$ sure whether I love or just like this cartoon, on one hand, The theme song is nice on the ears, the art style is very neat, I love the characters and I've laughed at many of the jokes... there's only one big problem for me, and that's the title character, Steven himself. Frankly, compared to the Gems, he just doesn't seem as interesting. For example, during one episode, The three Gems leave on a boat to "Fight a living Island" and I thought to myself, "Woah. That sounds at least 5 to ten times more interesting than Steve's problems, why can't I watch that?" But overall, It's pretty good, when Steven isn't being annoying He's an enjoyable character, and I'm pretty sure this is the first cartoon dad who isn't an idiot since Professor Utonium (And he isn't even a real father, more akin to Dr. Frankenstein if anything).

Oh. And my favorite character is Pearl. Just wanted to say that

tl;dr What do you guys think of Steven Universe? how would it compare to other cartoon network hits? Think it could get as big as say, Adventure Time? (I unfortunately don't)

Eh, I've been amused by it the few times I've watched it. I don't know that I'll ever record it like Adventure Time or Regular Show but it is watchable for me and fine if I'm just needing to have some background noise. I like it infinitely more than Uncle Grandpa. Pretty sure it will never be as big as AT.

I somehow doubt it'll even get as far as Uncle Grandpa if rumors of what I've heard of the CN leadership are true. Those guys apparently have some notions that they really need to fix.

I don't mind Steven Universe, although I agree that the show will or would be better if there was a better blend of the Gem side of things and Steven's side. Although I still feel like they should be bowing down and begging and pleading Gendy Tartakovsky to come back and continue Sym-Bionic Titan, so eh. Maybe I'm a bit spoiled by sci-fi cartoons that were good and engaging instead of kinda-sorta entertaining sometimes.

I've really liked what I've seen of the show. It's a pretty cool change up to have what's essentially a dorky little brother type of character trying to hang out with his older, cooler, more awesome sister-type characters. The action has been solid and imaginative too from what I've seen so far in other CN-Cartoons (like Frybo and, The Possessed Breakfast). I really hope this show stays around for a long while but I wouldn't be surprised if the higher-ups at CN try axing it.

Eh... The show's okay, to me... I really love the character Amethyst[footnote]WOMP WOMP![/footnote]... and I get what the show's trying to do by having it mostly focusing on Steven... In fact, since OP brings it up, the show really wants you to feel the same way Steven does... Wanting to go with the Gems on their adventures, but just can't most of the time...

I do hope this series does last as long as Adventure Time or Regular Show because I'm sure they have not yet shown their full hand on what this show can do on the imagination department... (Also, it only took one episode viewing to be able to sing it's theme song... The last CN show to do that to me was Adventure Time, where the creator of Steven Universe used to work on...)

It's still pretty new, so I'm not sure what I'll be thinking about it in the long run. Adventure time took 3 seasons to start developing an interesting mythos outside of random humor, so I guess I can be patient here, too. X D

the show is okay so far, but not really something I feel any particular attachment to. the series is episodic and fairly fun, I'm not fond of the character of Steven, though a few of his puns did generate a surprise laugh from me. My favorite character so far is probably garnet. Her dead-pan reaction to things is just awesome.

Rebecca Sugar is responsible for some of my favorite episodes of Adventure Time... in fact, she's responsible for almost ALL of them, so Steven Universe has a lot of potential behind it. I'll look forward to seeing if it lives up to it.

That said, being someone named "Steven" all the commercials of people saying the name over and over again really messed with my head. >.<

You mean Ozzy and Drix? the old cheesy animated superhero/cop show based on a flash-in-the-pan Chris Rock vehicle (Osmosis Jones, if you're curious)? Sounds like you're talking about that... and it was pretty neat for what it was. Could have been better if they hadn't insisted on talking to the kid so damn much, though I get why they did most of the time. Plot devices need framing, after all, don't they?

:p

I think it's alright, has some pretty good jokes, the characters are all pretty fun and relatable, and the artstyle is appealing and colourful, with animation that's nice and smooth. It's no Adventure Time or Gravity Falls, but it's entertaining in it's own little way, doesn't insult my childhood like Teen Titans GO!, and stands tall among the likes of Uncle Grandpa and... ugh... Annoying Orange...

I think its a very clever show with symbolism too deep for most people to get, including myself, unless you REALLY think about it.

Seriously this show is VERY clever. They just need to find something to do with the interesting dynamic they created.

I really like it so far, they care about the story. Steven got more character development in the first two episodes than some characters from similar shows get in an entire season. I also really like the gems, my favorite is Pearl aswell, but Amethyst and Garnet are a close second.

I hope it does get successful, but apparently Uncle Grandpa (urg) did better at launch. I want to see it continue because they actually put thought and effort into it, but lately Cartoon Network's track record for canceling good shows is starting to look more like Fox.

I have been given the show the benefit of a doubt since it's Rebecca Sugar creation and we do really more cartoon shows out there but I do agreed that Steven can be annoying at times but hey I'm no longer a kid (I mean it kind of like those shows where a kid character get to tag along adult character into dangerous situation)!
There is this Steven Universe review on Youtube that did pointed out that the show is maybe about imperfection like how the Gems are god like while Steven isn't and it was his fault that temple was destoryed but none of the girls blame him for that.

I have literally seen only one episode. The one with the together-breakfast. I have seen that episode every freaking time that show is on. Seriously, is there only that one episode or something? I'm up to double digits now, and that's the only one I've seen. I'm starting to get annoyed with the show because I'm not seeing anything new. Yes, I know that's not the show's fault completely (would be fixed if they'd make some new episodes for it already), but Steven can get extremely annoying after hearing him talk about Together Breakfast again and again and again.

I want to like the show. It seems different and enjoyable, but if I see waffles again...

looks like a blind 5 year old with adhd designed the characters and wrote the stories.. cause it's yet another really badly done cartoon that's recently come out on Cartoon network. bad animation, horrible character designs, a stupid, retarded annoying main character.. along with uncle grandpa and teen titans go, you have the holy trinity of the retarded league of america.. hopefully the executives at Cartoon network will pull their heads out of their asses and start green lighting good cartoons again instead of canceling great shows like Young Justice and replacing it with crap like this.

I watched the first episode (which I guess would technically be 2 episodes, what witht he 11 minutes format.) Eh, I didn't care for it. The setting doesn't appeal to me, or does the art style. And I didn't find Steven endearing.

I realize 1 (or 2) episode probably isn't enough to get an overall feel from most shows, I'm just giving my impressions.

I personally like it. I hope that it will continue for a good while, but I unfortunately can't say that Cartoon Network will keep it going over Uncle Grandpa.

I like Uncle Grandpa.

But I would sacrifice every character in it by FIRE if it would save Steven Universe.

When I first saw it, it reminded me a lot of Adventure Time, also Pearl kind of reminded me of Ilana form Sym Bionic Titan.

Been hooked by the show since.
Kind of wish we got to go on more Gem adventures, and it would also be cool if some of the other Gems got their own episodes.

But like others have said, they will probably make us wait for that with Steven.
Though, that could be cool. We stay with Steven until he gets a handle on his powers, and then we get to go protect the world with him.

Not sure if that is their plan, but even if it isn't, it's not like Steven doesn't get his own share of action.

Also; While it's hard to pick, Pearl is my favorite.

Best "motherly "no" speech", ever. :)

I think Steven Universe works very well because it combines that sort of slice of life with the larger than life.

I've seen all the episodes and I enjoy it. It's has heart, good stories, and while the title character is dim he means well. I would like to see this series catch on, but given the sexist attitude of Cartoon Network, I feel like we may be getting non-stop plugging of Uncle Grampa.

As for my comments on CN's idiotic actions against the female viewer, I made them perfectly clear in my post from the article on Paul Dini's feelings towards them.

well now, let's be fair. They advertise the hell out of Steven Universe, and it did very well in the ratings. Issues with women/female viewership are very real in the CN hierarchy, but I don't think we've seen evidence of it with the treatment of Steven Universe yet.

I enjoy the show a good amount and hope it continues. The only things that annoy me slightly now are that I have seen reruns of the same three episodes too many times (I know there is 5 or 6 episodes out, but still), and that it got my hopes up to do the whole 30 minute (technically 23 minutes or so with commercials) of new episodes each week with the premier but after that first week (or the second week, I forget if they did it the second week as well) they started doing one new episode and a rerun of one of the other episodes, which comes from a really small pool of episodes.
