Just like you said, the stereotypes are the ones that get the attention. And sadly, they'll shape people's opinions.

I'm not sure I'd be happier living in a world where people had to make a qualifying statement for every controversial comment they made, along the lines of "Of course, I know not everyone who lives there/believes this/is a fan of this is like that". If it makes you feel any better, I'd generalise Mississippi long before I'd generalise Texas.
