They certainly had the odds against them, though. The German invasion of the UK couldn't actually ever happen (Operation Overlord was basically Sea Lion in reverse, and look what was needed for that), so they didn't try that.
I think comparing Sealion to Overlord understates the geographical difficulties that the Germans would have faced that the Allies didn't when invading France. Simply put, look at a map of the Sussex and Kent coast.

Now, rule out landing beaches that are urbanised - too easy to defend, most have sea walls (a barrier to mechanised troops, including tanks and artillery), and the calais raid demonstrates the foolhardiness of such a plan. An attack on the beach at Brighton or Eastbourne or Dover would have been suicide.

Now rule out the marshlands. Similar reasons of impassibility of mechanised vehicles.

Now rule out cliffs. Because they're flipping cliffs.

End result is there is only about five miles maximum of usuable, practical, landing beaches

Hitler had a Jewish doctor that helped out his family for free when he was young (coming from a really poor family), so he kept that guy protected away from that whole Holocaust thing and called him "The Good Jew"

Many companies famous now, worked for the Nazis in the 1930s and 40s. Besides the obvious Volkswagen; Hugo Boss designed SS uniforms and now is one of the foremost designers of expensive suits in the world. IBM made the punch card databases for Nazi computers to catalog why someone was being sent to a camp(Jewish, Gay, ect) and to what camp they were being sent. Siemens AG used concentration camp laborers to make their products, and manufactured important parts of the camps for the Nazis(Including the gas chambers used to perform mass executions.) All of the aforementioned companies are among the 500 richest in the world today.

Another contribution from the Nazis(in part) is the A-10 Warhog. Highest decorated pilot of all time, German ace Gunther Rall was brought to America after the war and asked to help US engineers design a close ground-support fighter for the USAF.

As an addendum, Hermann Goering was technically more highly decorated than Gunther Rall. But most military historians disregard this, because Hermann Goering(As head of the Luftwaffe) was fond of making up awards and then giving them to himself.

*not really about the Nazis but I found it interesting. A Canadian pilot known as the Falcon of Malta is the only allied pilot to outscore German pilots in any particular theater of war(The Mediterranean theater.)

Henry Ford, founder of Ford Automobile Company was an anti-Semite who wrote essays on the inferiority of Jews. He received medals and personal letters from Adolf Hitler. Hitler even mentions Ford in Mein Kampf.

Joseph Goebbels was originally a chicken farmer, which gave him many of the ideas on breeding 'lesser' people, as well as the idea for concentration camps.

Adolf Hitler's favorite boxer, Max Schmeling(German) was beaten by Max Baer(US.) Max Baer(who you may know as the villain from Cinderella Man,) wore a Star of David during the match in honor of his Jewish grandfather, and of the Jewish community as a whole.

Hitler's personal train was named Amerika.

In 1938, Hitler was Time magazine?s man of the year.

Hitler's original solution to the 'Jewish problem' was to move all the Jews to Madagascar.

During WW1 a British private named Henry Tandey caught Adolf Hitler completely offguard. Tandey however instead of capturing him or shooting him, let Hitler go. Hitler often used this story later to argue that he had a divine mandate for his actions, which is why his life was spared on that day.

The Wolfpack doctrine was developed by Karl Doenitz while he was in prison in a port city during WW1. He watched all the boats coming and going with supplies, noted its importance, and gathered as much information as he could about British and American shipping. After Hitlers death he took over the Nazi government, and immediately surrendered. He was taken to Nuremburg and found guilty of waging a war of aggression, and sinking 'non-military' allied supply ships.

It's estimated that nearly 2 million German women were raped by Red Army soldiers.

The Nazis were the first anti-smoking group in the world. Their scientists pioneered the research into the dangers of smoking.

The name of the Nazi party is National Socialist German Workers Party. Nazi however is not an abbreviation for that name in German. The term Nazi comes from the Bavarian word for 'simple minded,' and was first used by journalists to deride the party.

Rumors circulated even at the highest levels(Hitler's personal staff and cabinet) that Rudolf Hess was a homosexual. In 1941 Hess stole a plane, and flew it to the UK where he crashed and was arrested. He wanted to attempt to negotiate peace on behalf of both sides.

EDIT: Actually, atrocities they commited before the war would be good, stuff like the extermination of disabled people in the mental hospitals etc.
The first group that the Nazi's came after as part of their euthanization/execution program was not the Jews, but the elderly. This plan was ended quickly because of the public outcry against it.

Hitler hated Slavs as much as he hated the Jews(if not more.) And they were the second largest group sent to concentration camps, and if he had conquered Russia, would have easily eclipsed the Jewish population in sheer number of deaths.

11 million died in the holocaust. Only 6 million of which were Jews. Slavs, homosexuals, Russian POWs, communists, gypsies, Jehovahs witnesses made up the bulk of the other 5 million.

While the striking image of Jews being sent to concentration camps is of their being dragged from their homes to trains, this is generally untrue of German Jews. Jews living in France, Romania, Norway and so forth fought against and tried to avoid capture. But a plurality of the German Jews went willingly on the trains, many viewed it as their patriotic duty to follow the orders of the Nazi state. They did not however know what really laid in store for them; only that they were being asked to move together into camps set up by the German state.

Near the end of the war, Hitler issued an order to round up the last Jews in Berlin. Thousands of nonviolent protestors showed up at the SS prison before the Jews were shipped, and demanded that they be released. The SS brought in tanks and machineguns and demanded that the protestors disperse or be fired on. The protestors refused to disperse and the crowed continued to grow over two or three days. Hitler ordered the Jewish prisoners be released, deeming it more important that Berlin appear as though it had no dissenters than to finish off Berlin's Jewish population.

Nazi scientists irradiated the testicles and ovaries of Jews and other unwanted groups, in order to see what would happen if they forcibly bred them afterwards as well as if they were still able to produce sperm and if the eggs survived.

A method of execution the Nazi's were fond of was to find a bridge at a river. They would tie or shackle couples together and then shoot one person, letting the dead weight of the person shot drag their spouse underwater to drown.

One thing that made the national-socialist-party (aka Nazis) so popular with the german people during the time before the war were that they were set to make many luxuries more available and affordable to the general public.
Most famously cars (It's why VW - Volkswagen is called Volkswagen, it's a wagon (car) for the people), electronics such as Television and Radio (for obvious reasons) and vacations to foreign countries such as italy (as part of the "Kraft durch Freude" - Strength through Joy - program, wich was an initiative to offer various recreational activities to the general public in order to cast a positive light to the regime and to sneak the Nazi ideology into every part of everyday life)

Amazing how much compassion some of these mass murderers were capable of.

The German science didn't want to follow Einstein's ("Jewish") theory of relativity, so they went another way. Into quantum physics. It was very effective, thus why their science was so succesful in developing rockets, jet fighters and more. For example, plans were made during the war to build the E-100 tank, which the specialists concluded was a machine that could match tanks from 1970s.

Also, contrary to popular belief, Nazis were Germans. Even though propaganda would have it that every single German opposed Hitler, you can't deny Nazis were Germans. Now, you can and should deny that Germans ARE Nazis, but, well, most of them were. Thus the war.

Another fun fact: every human, be it Jew, Pole or a Russian, take your pick, before being sent to death in the German Death Camps located in Poland, was stripped of every possession - clothes, valuables, FOOD. Every single of those commodities were either sent back to the Reich or used to feed/clothe people in concentration camps.

Another fun fact: Germany treated various occupied regions differently. While helping a Jew in France/Benelux was met with slap on the wrist, on occupied Polish territories helping a Jew resulted in the helper being killed. Immediately. Along with his closest family and everyone remotely tied to the helper. Poles helped them regardless.

Another fun fact: German war machines were in fact superior to those that Allied used. They have lost only because USA/USSR flooded them with their tanks/aircraft. For example, German heavy tank Tiger II, called the King, was virtually impenetrable for Allied guns. They had to pound him till the armour wore down and cracked - of course, losing many machines in the process. Panzerkampfwagon IV was vastly superior to T-34, despite what World of Tanks may indicate.

Yet another: when German forces liberated Ukraine from USSR, the populace greeted them happily with flowers and stuff like that. When one of the commander remarked to Hitler that Ukrainians could be a part of their effort, Hitler decided to use and then dispose of those "sub-humans".

Not done yet: when the war begun, France had bigger and better army than Germany. During Polish campaign (September '39), they could've easily disposed of the Nazi threat, along with their British allies. Furthermore, they have broken their mutual defense pacts they had with Poland. When France surrendered to Germany, German military (Wehrmacht) utilized French tanks to boost their military growth.

Hitler wasn't a German, as he was an Austrian by birth.

Last fun fact: Germany could've been easily defeated, had the Allies reacted quicker to the many violations of the pact of versailles. They chose not to, one of the British leader saying (about Czechoslovakia) that they [british] are buying peace for themselves at the cost of some distant country noone cares about anyway.

K, my job is done here *flies away*

If the Allies had hit Germany's power supply, (which was quite undefended)the war would have been over a lot quicker....

You do know that they mark it by the mark scheme right?

They don't give a damn about your smart facts, they check list it with their mark schemes to see if you've included the main things you learnt in class and revision notes. (I'm assuming this is your 10 mark question)

Forget learning useless 'interesting' facts and focus on learning how to give the correct answers.

Okay, to avoid the OP getting low marks, I shall repeat this:

Hitler was NOT, repeat NOT, a sodding vegetarian. This is a myth, and holds about as much water as claiming that Hitler was a 47 Norwegian Cyborg. The bugger didn't like plain meat, but did eat sausages, liver dumplings and a lot of fish.

Hugo Boss also didn't design the SS or Wehrmacht uniforms. He was one of many clothing manufactures who made them - though he wasn't a licensed manufacturer until the mid 1930's (for Nazi party uniforms. Later he ended up mass producing uniforms, using forced labour). He was a committed Nazi, but he didn't design the uniform

Isn't there something about how most of what we know about the limitations of the human body, ie. what kind of temperatures, pressure, etc. it can withstand, was learned from the extermination camps?

Edit:

First of all: Is that actually a popular belief, believing that no Germans were Nazis? I haven't heard it before. Is it a regional belief or something?

And for the second 'fun' fact: Is it a myth that they also removed gold teeth, glass eyes, etc.?

Max Schmelling was also beaten by Joe Louis (the second time they fought), which was a very big deal at the time.

Not true. Firstly, the majority of the German populace weren't members of the Nazi party.

Secondly, many, many people outside Germany supported the Nazis until they found themselves at war with them. You could argue that anti-semitism only really became unpopular because the Nazis lost the war, many people were very much in favour of removing the lesser races.

Nope. There were experiments done, primarily by Mengele, but without any scientific method, rendering the whole thing useless as any sort of scientific tool. Much of his results (if they could be called that) were manipulated to ensure the outcome he was hoping for (i.e. white dudes are just great)

You can bring up the July 20 plot.

It was lead by Nazi officers who wanted to end the war and negotiate peace with the Allies.

They made several attempts to assassinate Hitler which all failed on account of dumb luck for Hitler. For example, they managed to install a bomb on a plane that carried the fuhrer but it failed to detonate.

The highpoint of their conspiracy was the July 20 plot, when they managed to smuggle a suitcase bomb into a bunker meeting and place it right next to Hitler's feet. The general, responsible for planting the bomb, then left the meeting to "answer a phone". Moments before the bomb went off, another general decided to move the suitcase, because it was in the way of his legs and he placed it behind a heavy wooden table leg that perfectly shielded Hitler from the blast. Mythbusters did a fun episode where they tried out various ways to blow up the conference room and see if Hitler would survive and I believe they came to the conclusion that the suitcase couldn't have been better placed to ensure that Hitler would survive it.

One of their plans was to make a sattalite, with a huge magnifying glass, and use it to burn places like ants.
As you can see they where pretty sane.

I don't know if it's been said already but I think it might be a good idea to read up a little on the german resistance as well.

Just the wikipedia entries to start you of:

The White Rose http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Rose

The Edelweiss Pirates http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edelweiss_Pirates (Awesome name for a resistance movement by the way. They were practically the resistance in my home city. Sadly their most prominent member died last Octobre. He was a local celebrity till his death, being the "castle ghost" of Severin's Gate Castle here in Cologne. He is one of the "Righteous among the Nations" honored in Yad Vashem and will always be remembered as someone to look up to.)

And of course the military resistance, the Kreisau Circle: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kreisau_Circle

Edit: Yeah, don't use the wikipedia-entry on the Edelweiss Pirates though. I just read it myself and it's full of errors and outdated information. -_-

Er, the Nazi camps, yeah, the Japanese did a bit more research with their atrocities.

The Japanese Unit 731...ok, this is during WW2, plenty of war crimes going on, but fucking hell that was horrific even by those standards.

The people involved got immunity on the condition they gave their findings to the US.

Hitler was insane, amd truly thought his dog was his actual son.
I believe he may have been a drug addict; this is the only fact I'm not 100% on.

The hoolocaust was a gradual process, culminating in the concentration camps. First, the was the... Something sounding like the eistengruppen. Ey rode around on moter cycles in western Europe mahine gunning all the underisirable in the village. That wasn't effiecient enough, so they made gas vans, portable gas chambers. Only after the invasion were the concentration camps start to be built.

The Nazis knew they would lose by 1941, they kept fighting in hopes they could make peace with the allies and fight together against Russia.

Hitler remained friends with Musilini, even after Italy betrayed Germany.

Hitler thought Japan would win against America after Pearl Habor, so he declared war against America. One of his fatal mistakes.
Only destroyers were... Destroyed, during the attack. Modern naval warafare was based on aircraft carryers.

Hitler arrived several hours late to all his speaches, so when he finally came people would naturally be happy to see him (because hey, now we can go home and sit down)

All of our marketing techiniques are based off of nazi propoganda. All of them. Goebbels was a genius, fusing propoganda with entertainememt, so people didn't know they were being brain washed.

Trying to think of more random facts...

I'm done for now.

Sneak in your opinion on how awesome the SS officer uniform is. Let's face it, the SS Officer uniforms were the sexiest uniforms in history. Shame they were worn by such dicks.
