The premiere is just around the corner, so I'm probably WAY behind most people, but I've just found out Fantasy Flight is about to release the 3rd edition of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay.

Frankly, that much was predictable since they'd got the license, but I had a look into whatever info I could find on the new edition. The career system - probably WFRP's defining characteristic - is still there. They seem to have ditched halflings in favour of another flavour of elves. I dunno, it had always seemed like the elves were never the game's focus, guess it's gonna change now. The attribute system has undergone another round of simplification, secondaries were cut. The dice are different, apparently so that the test results might be "better defined"... Skills and talents have been moved from the rulebook to "action cards"...

To me, it seems like the new edition has gone the D&D path and was crafted to draw in the MMO crowd... the rules seem to impose more limitations, the party members have very clearly defined roles...

You know, I might actually be wrong, but that's what I gathered from all the official releases.

Thoughts?

But... But Halflings are part of the Empire! Don't be fooled, Fantasy Flight! Halflings are way cooler than Hobbits! Why do new types of Elves need different stats, anyway? They're only culturally different, because the Warhammer world isn't fucking stupid (Fucking Dark Elves are just Elves, dammit!)!

I'll have to see it, but so long as there are still critical tables with "Your opponent's head lands 2D10 feet away" as possible results, I should be happy.

if it's mmo it's crap. seriously. whole d&d is quite nice but it isnt great for mmo's. and you should consider telling us bit more about the game and less about d&d mechanics, assuming thats what you tried to explain.

Sorry to you guys, I kinda assumed whoever got interested in the thread would be already familiar with the topic (also, I apologize for a week without response - whoever invented lack of Internet should be punished). I can also see how my first post might have seemed a bit chaotic. Emotions, heh...

So anyhoo - WFRP is not an MMO. It's a tabletop RPG. Maybe they have no place in "Gaming Discussion", maybe that's reserved for videogames, I'm sorry if I put that in the wrong category.

The references to D&D and MMOs are to be understood thusly: the latest edition of D&D has been thoroughly criticized for taking mechanics from MMOs and being geared very strongly towards MMO players, resulting in a game quite different to previous editions and considered rather more shallow. I have not played the current edition, but I have heard the sentiment repeated so many times from different sources that I assume it to be the case.

WFRP 1st ed. had been my first tabletop RPG over a decade ago and I have GMed quite a few sessions of the 2nd edition too, so my interest was understandably aroused when I've heard about a new edition coming out. And from what I could find out, it seems to also be geared towards the MMO players. I think it will suffer from it. The final judgement will come after first reviews, when I have to decide whether to stick to 2nd ed. or switch to the new one, of course.

The whole second paragraph are references to the game itself, I don't think this forum is the place to explain them in depth. A simple search on Google should provide you with enough information, should you become curious.

It might of course be the case that I'm simply suffering from the veterans' affliction of instinctive resentment for anything new. I just wanted to hear the opinions of other WFRP players, if there are any on these forums.

Hope this clarifies the matter and again, sorry for my first post being so muddled and chaotic.
