So what do I play now?

Hi, first time poster :)

Here's the deal, I like games which I can play forever. I've been playing civilization 4 since the minute it got out, tried out most of the expansions and mods, but I mostly enjoyed Fall From Heaven 2 and Rhye's and Fall of civs (and its Europe modmod ).

Today I officially got tired of civ4. Before that I mostly played Ultima Online (on a free roleplaying shard) since 2001.

Of course that's not all I played, I mean they can only entertain so far and I needed a break. During these needed breaks I've played a lot of things, mostly RPGs, RTSs and RPG based games (Mass Effect, oblivion, KOTOR, the witcher, command and conquer 4, not necessarily in that order... )

And now I'm looking for something new. I'm not big for shooters and fighting games (except for super smash brothers) but I enjoy any adventure type game, RPG, and some RTSs.

As you can see I prefer games which last a long time, but regardless, does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should try now?
thanks.

Try the Total War series. A hybrid of Turn Based Strategy and RTS Combat. Lots of replayability and you might like it since you stated that the Civ games are your favourite. The best of the series is Rome: Total War, but it's a bit dated at this point. The latest is Empire: Total War, but it's somewhat lower quality than the earier games. I'd suggest going for Medieval 2: Total war, since it's right in between those two and is likely the best bang for your buck (and it should be dirt cheap by now).

EDIT: And no, an MMORPG doesn't sound like your thing...

Try Runes of Magic, completely free, very very similar to World of Warcraft in terms of UI, graphics and gameplay. Let down by poor translation.

Is there a reason why nobody's suggested Fallout 3 yet? That's always a favourite candidate for these threads.

An RTs that sold me on PC gaming, Command and Conquer Generals, old but still good fun to play, especially with the Zero Hour expansion pack

Company of Heroes is a spectacular RTS.
Also this is a great RTS, so I too recommend

Supreme Commander. I dont play it online (because though i'm a demon of destruction when it comes to online FPS's I cant for the life of me win in any RTS against a human opponent), but set up a massive battle against 3-4 Supreme AI's on a 80km2 map and you'll pretty much be set for the night.

If you like both ROG and RTS have you considerede their bastard children the MOBAs? (multiplayer Online Battle Arena) liek
DotA (WC3TFT mod, the game + expansion is cheap)
Demigod (pretty new, deeper skill trees)
Heroes of Newerth (DotA remade as a stand alone game, so it's not held back by the WC3 engine, easy to find free beta keys online)
League of Legends (haven't played, but it has EUL and Guisoo (the 2 first makers of DotA) on it's team)

They're all multiplayer games, though Demigod can be played vs relatively good AIs. They're extremely awesome if you're playing with friends/a clan so you're cordinated.
If you're not into Competitive games, they're prolly not your thing though.

Just as far as 'games which last forever' goes have a look at Frontier First Encounters. It's an epic space game, must be at least 10 years old now but I've not seen anything on that scale since.

Also, relying on you liking Football, Football Manager is a fantastic time sink.

Ah yes... Generals... I don't miss you because I learned that all you need is to spam one unit to kill everyone, but you were fun for a while.
The mods are awesome though, and it is quite fun to build about 35 nuclear missiles and launch them all at once, throwing scorpion tanks into the air only to have them fill the screen and make you pee yourself when they fall back down.

I love poor translation! I got this gem from an MMO i played recently:

"The effect will disappear not even you are dead!"

I am Pimppeter2, and I am here to ask you a question. Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his brow? "No" Says the man at Ebay, "it belongs to the poor". "No" says the Man at religioustolerance.org, "it belongs to God". "No" says the man at Youtube, "it belongs to everyone". I rejected those answers. Instead; I chose something different. I chose the Impossible. I chose. The Escapist. With a forum where the opinionated would not fear the censor (within reason), where the Moderators would not be bound by petty morality, where the Gone Gonzo would not be constrained by the troll. And with the ache of your fingers (and perhaps a new keyboard), The Escapist can be yours as well...

BTW: I did not create that. Just something that is used a lot as a welcome speech

OT:Trythe new Total War game. I'm having barrels of fun with it.

And you can also try Demon's Souls [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.158526]

I'll go ahead and second @RedMenace, in saying Dragon Age: Origins. It might not be the longest game, but it's got about 50 or so hours end to end, and there's a pretty high replay value. Although, if you want long, you could always replay some older titles. Like Roller Coaster Tycoon, or something.

Also; welcome to the forum boards, if not the Escapist as a whole!
