Before anyone tells me to go google it,

I've been member on escapist for a while now, checking in on the forums on a daily basis.
Once in a while, not often, I see someone refer to or in some way talk about Skyrim, and a lot of people seem to be going absolutely crazy excited about it, so I figured I might as well find outd out what it is, what kind of game it is and what it will be about.

Instead of google though, I'd like to have some fellow escapists explain what you know about Skyrim, since the dedication a lot of people are showing probably makes you able to give very delicious explanations!

So... Yeah.. What the fuck is Skyrim? :p

... So, hold on, you expect us to tell you what Skyrim is instead of using google?

Lazy, much?

I'm going to refuse to tell you, just like everyone else should.

It's the sequel to Oblivion, which was the sequel to Morrowind, which was the sequel to etc, etc, etc. It's basically the new Elder Scrolls RPG.

Also, it's most likely going to be the head GOTY contender.

Also, also, how's that rock you're living under treating you? Good?

to quote Yahtzee: You Lazy ************!!

It is a Province of Tamriel. That is home to the Nords.
It is also very mountainous{thus the name}.

What you should have asked was what is; the Elder Scrolls.

But as you didn't just go to the Wiki and it will explain it in detail.

No, they're asking a video game community about a video game instead of trying to figure it out for themselves on what could be a fairly misinformed basis. Honestly, it makes sense.

OT: Basically, picture a 1st person hack and slash RPG that has been developing more and more over the years. There's also several varieties of magic, bow&arrows, and customization and sandbox gameplay that's just full of...Wow. I'll tell you right now my opinion is biased, I love the series. It gives you an absolute insane amount of things to do, in an enormous fantasy world with beautiful aesthetics. On the PC there are fan-made mods that allow so much content to be added to the game it's insane. And now the latest installment is fixing the biggest issues the series had. It's adding more voice actors to the...like...5 total in the previous games. They're making the combat waay more interesting with finishing move animations, dual wielding weapons and spells, etc. And now there are dragons. DRAGONS. That bit should speak for itself. So yea, that was probably a bit vague but hope it helped.

TES (The Elder Scrolls) is a videogame series taking place in Tamriel a magical land of myth and adventure which is a continent on a planet in its own universe. There be magic and stuffs in this universe, which whilst it is fantasy, apes next to nothing from Tolkein.

Skyrim is a country to the north where the Nords come from (basically viking-ey people). The races are as follows -

Nords (Viking style people)
Redguard (ninja black guys, like clones of Samuel L Jackson)
Orcs (big hitty dumb people - like all orcs)
High Elves (basic magic peoples)
Imperials (humans - conquered all of Tamriel with their legions and formed the Empire)
Wood Elves (standard stealthy archer peoples)
Dunmer (Dark Elves),
Bretons (basically half elf, half human)
Argonains (lizard men)
Khajiit (Stealthy, cat people)

The last game (Oblivion) followed the Oblivion Crisis, as when the last emperor dies the covanent between gods and en breaks so the barrier between the different planes of Oblivion weaken (Your realm being a plane of Oblivion). Mehrunes Dagon (big evil daedra (demon) Prince of Destruction) leads his Daedra through to kill stuff. You find the heir, he sacrifices himself, banishes Dagon by becoming the avatar of Akatosh (the lead god) before becoming a statue.

200 years later, you have to slay the dragons whose return to Skyrim was foretold in a prophecy.
(as a different hero!)

Basically it is an open world, sandbox RPG with magic and fantasy stuff galore. They are very good games and I'd highly reccommend it. There is ALWAYS lots of side stuff to do and you'll probably spend a minimum of 70 hours to complete the game fully on one character. But you'd probably have multiple on the go due to wanting to vary your play.

Is this good enough?

Instead of google, I'd like to have some fellow escapists explain to me how it's possible that someone doesn't know anything about Skyrim?

The second coming of Christ.
:D
Yeah, i'm pretty hyped for it.
Play Oblivion and Morrowind, and then you'll understand.

Or to elaborate, it's the next installment in the Elder Scrolls series, and they are really quite good.

If you've never heard of The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion or Morrowind... then it will be hard to explain.
(Morrowind is the Third game in The Elder Scrolls series, but it was what made them popular.
Oblivion was the fourth and Skyrim will be the fifth)

But basically, the guys at Bethesda, they created this huge world space...

You could go ANYWHERE on the map, no invisible walls or anything like that.
Then they added quests and stuff, filled the land with unique treasure and monsters.
It was called Morrowind, and it redefined the word Free Roam in RPGs.

Then, they felt they needed to follow it up.

Another huge map.
More quests treasure and monsters...
One thing that put many off Morrowind, was how unforgiving its gameplay was.
Oblivion help launch The Elder Scrolls into widespread fame, by allowing it to keep many of the core aspects of Morrowind, but make it more approachable...
Many Hard core Scrolls fans (about 90% of the Escapist) saw this as a step back.

But Skyrim, seems to be leaning more towards Morrowind's style (be the best or die horribly in this hostile land) than Oblivion's (you are the best, because everyone else is crap).

Needless to say, each of the games if full of hundreds of hours of gameplay.
And every world is fleshed out, well made, and full of a rich lore.
Despite looking very Tolkien, The Elder Scrolls is completely unique and separate from the classic cliches of Western Fantasy.

And this is the exact problem with asking a community of people to tell them about it, no answer here will be fair. It's all going to be biased.

Look at the game for yourself with the E3 gameplay and (if you can find it) QuakeCon and you'll get a better understanding for yourself.

Speaking of which: did anyone else notice that the QuakeCon gameplay demo was just an extended version of the E3 one? I was kinda annoyed at it, because everyone was like "OMG A NEW HALF AN HOUR OF SKYRIM IS BEING SHOWN!" when it was only like 15 mins of new stuff.

Skyrim is the fifth game in The Elder Scrolls series. Other people on this thread have described what it is. Of course most people on this thread love The Elder Scrolls.
So, what shall it be? Do you join the Unity or do you die here? Join! Die! Join! Die!

A massive, free roaming, open ended RPG from the makers of Oblivion, to which it is a sequel, and Fallout 3 featuring a brand new engine, amazing graphics and exactly one metric shitload of content.

Seriously, dude, look it up.

It's a first person sandbox RPG. The Elder Scrolls games set you free in a world chock full of stuff to do, with the freedom to develop your character as you like without many restrictions. It's quite possible to play hundreds of hours without even starting the main quest.

As a person who played the leaked beta, I agree...

I'll need to get my hands on Skyrim though, before I pick of course (shit this is going to be a good year for games and a bad one for my wallet).

Ha, that was one of the answers I was expecting.

OT: I think you should go to youtube and watch some of the videos of it. There was one from E3 that would probably tell you everything you want to know.
