So, why do people dislike Saints Row the Third anyway?

Everything that has been said above. Not hating on 3, it was a decent enough game, but it was too short, too stilted in customization, and frankly just seemed that they didn't spend enough time making sure the world felt 'real'. There's such a thing as trying too hard, and SR3 is doing so. SR4 looks to be more of the same, and I'll probably skip it.

Nothing wrong with being silly, that is why GTA San Andreas and Saints Row 2 are my favorite games in the genre.
But the silly is only one snack of a bigger meal, and the problem with SR3 is they decided the whole meal will a bucket of that one snack... that gets real old real fast.

Maybe if I was 15 that would still be cool to me but I've been around the block a few times already and this just doesn't cut it anymore.

To me it has to do with being too silly all the time.
Saint's Row 2 was silly, but it wasn't the crazy kind all the time, there was a degree of normality to allow the silly moments to stand out.
3 would not stop its silliness to the point that you would eventually get bored of it,I think I heard some one say "Crashing a plane on a lady's head is fun, but when it becomes the usual method in which you get around then it starts being more tiring instead of fun".
Plus, I think SR3 fails to be silly when it counts most.
For example, the cheats in SR2 had some real craziness potential, you had angry drivers which when coupled with low gravity and no death, would result in laughs and high fives all around, you had to be creative in Saints Row 2 for the fun to begin, in Saints Row 3 everything is created to be like some sort of gag or something over the top, there was never a need for any creativity because everything was already some "extreme" thing so you don't feel the need for you to turn it into anything more.
Think of Saint's Row 2 as a sandbox where your creativity matters, Saint's Row 3 is more of a ride, where the dev has already thought and outlined of how the experience is supposed to be like.

I just thought third was quite a clusterfuck, and how the rival gangs were settled wasn't particularly satisfying.

SR2 had a more engaging tussle with the rival gangs and you systematically took them out one by one. SR3 kinda lumped them all together into this blob.

And yeah there's the customization and game balance/progression issues and DLCs giving you laser jets from the get go.

The controls do handle better and the game does play better as far as running around and beating people up go, but that's just about the only area SR3 really improved on.

To me, it was less that it was 'too silly' and more that it was trying too hard to be random. It was still really good in terms of gameplay, the dialogue was funny and the missions were really creative (especially the cyberspace one) but sometimes it just reached too far into Family Guy levels of baseless humour and that gets old really fast for me.

I still can't wait for the new game though, I just hope in this one they have more fun side missions like Trail Blazing and less of those fucking awful escort ones.

I prefer 2 for the following reason:

In Saints Row 2, I was The Joker in a straight man's world.

In Saints Row 3, I was a straight man in The Joker's world.

That's my reason. I still like Saints Row 3, I just like Saints Row 2 more.

because the silly stuff seemed less intentional in saints row 2.

in sr2 it seem like the entire dev team was set on making a serious gangster game but two dimwits on the team one day had a secret meeting where they decided to pull a prank on the rest of the team. and while everyone else was working on the game. these two guys was making cars that let you spray poo and giant purple bunnies. and when they deadline day came and it was time to show the finished product to the people who we're gonna publish. they waited for the game to be approved, and when it was then they ran off with it and copy pasted all the silly stuff on to the final product and sent it to mass production before anyone else got a good look at it.

in saints row 3. it would seem as these two developers are now being punished by having to come up with 5 new silly things every week. making them work like dogs and making all the run-gun-funny silly stuff feel forced.

I can see the argument of people who didn't like 3 as much as 2. 2 was a little more grounded so it could still be badass. 3 nothing you ever do is cool and nothing has weight because by an hour in you're numb to it. The death of carlos in SR2 didnt exactly have me breaking into tears but killing of that one minor character has much more weight than the character deaths in SR3.

That said, saints row has never really been about the story and SR3 is definitely more fun. I spent most of the time dicking around in SR2 anyways, and to me that's what the game is about. As long as that gets better all is good.

I honestly never had that problem. Like, I keep hearing this, but in like ten playthroughs...Nope.

I didn't see too many reviews but the ones I did see were awfully hypocritical and come off as snooty.

Example: They pointed out how much they enjoyed mowing countless civilians down in their car in SR2, watching the bodes flail about, but found the wrestling style take downs of civilians in SR3 "went too far"...Really![/quote]

Most of the major reviews I saw were positive. A couple of them gave it GOTY or near-GOTY status. I haven't seen a "snooty" review.

I have a couple of major problems with Saint's Row the Third.

Saint's Row the Third Activities:

Snatch
Escort
Trafficking
Insurance Fraud
Mayhem
Tank-Mayhem
Heli-Assault
Trail Blazing
Professor Genki's etc-etc
Guardian Angel

Saint's Row II Activities

Chop Shop
Crowd Control
Demolition Derby
Drug Trafficking
Escort
Fight Club
FUZZ
Heli-Assault
Hitman
Insurance Fraud
Mayhem
Septic Avenger
Snatch
Trail Blazing

---

Not only is The Third mission out on 4 activities (5 if you count Tank and Standard Mayhem as the same thing) but they took out the most interesting, the silliest and, my favorite (in order: Fuzz, Septic Avenger and, Crowd Control). Hitman is another mission that should have stayed right where it was since it was deeply involving and made players really scrutinize and take in the details of Stillwater.

Another complaint that I thought was valid was how similar Steelport felt to Stillwater. Not a major problem but still something that bugged me personally. There also seemed to be a lot of details taken out of character design in terms of determining how a character looks and, how a character can dress. I know it's a detail you'll never see, online or offline but YOU the player know that your straight-laced, well groomed contract killer like wearing fishnet stockings and neon thongs underneath his $5,000 suit.

I don't dislike Saint's Row the Third...I just didn't put as much time into it as I did for Saint's Row 2.

That's...Ummm...An interesting take...

Howso?
Because it treats the female protagonist exactly the same as the male one. What other game can you play a fat black lady and be completely badass?

as a long time fan of the series, i can tell you why i didnt like The Third as much. its obvious that the game was rushed out as a cash grab from a dying company trying to catch a last gasp of air. The game was ridiculously short first of all. the silliness wasnt an issue for me, i personally like the over-the-top nature of the series.

my second issue was the watered down customization options. SR2 could see you running around in a cowboy hat, a tube-top with pot leaf and a pair of knee high CFM boots with no underwear. i remember reading that the lack of being able to layer an customize the clothes was the result of the engine change, but thats a load of shit.

my third issue was the DLC. i'm a frequent DLC purchaser, even day one DLC, but charging for cheat codes? lame. charging for the in game rewards that already exist, but you didnt choose? reeeaaaal lame. i bought the season pass, which, in my opinion means you're dedicating yourself to that title and keeping that game, so all those microtransaction outfits, weapons and vehicles should come with the season pass. look at rockstar's season pass to see that in action.

my final gripe with the game was the final dlc that was never released that is now becoming SR4. taking an expansion and instead making it a new game just reeks of business-suit scum.

all of these issues tie back to my original thesis, this game suffers most from being pushed out by the company when the studio could have clearly done better with the game given enough time.

captcha: space is big. that's deep, captcha. maybe i was wrong when i called you a stupid, pointless annoyance on an otherwise awesome website.

People don't like things that are different from what came before in the series.

Personally, I love it.
There aren't enough silly games and way too many serious ones.
If I want serious, I've got real life. Don't need games for that.

I have played through SR2 and SR3 multiple times and love them both for pretty much opposite reasons.

For SR2, I loved it for the fact of just how much freedom it exuded. The character creator was and still is amazing for me, and so too were the wardrobe options. I mean, how many other games can you get away with running around like some meth head, dressed up in nothing by tighty-whities, a sweater vest and neon green football helmet? SR2 essentially gave you the a big box of LEGOs and said go have at it. Further, the storyline felt more purposeful. You start in SR2 as some nameless thug waking up from a years-long coma in a jail. You spend the entire game afterward taking Stilwater by force, and essentially becoming a true kingpin of crime, and it feels more like a solid victory than it does in SR3.

SR3, on the other hand is concentrated fun, but at the loss of things that made SR2 so great. The character customization is still pretty nice, but not quite as absurd as you could be in the previous game (although the character models are much nicer looking this time around). And the story knows it is a ridiculous setup right from the get-go, so it doesn't try to drum up any drama because otherwise it would contrast with the overall insanity in the game. But the reason why I probably put SR3 just a little bit higher than SR2 is simply because the game is a hell of a lot more fun to play than SR2 (and much much more fun than SR1). The driving and shooting mechanics feel much better, and the melee combat is night and day different. They did slim down the activities, but considering how all feel a lot more fun than the previous iterations (sans one of the Trail Blazing activity in SR3 which I absolutely hate), I can let it go. It would be cool to see them be placed back in.

There are several reasons I didn't like SR3 as much as SR2. The first is that when you essentially ctrl +c -> ctrl +v large chunks of one game into its sequel and somehow end up with less content and less customization something has gone wrong. As mentioned above the activities in SR3 are more redundant and much less well explained than in SR2. Spraying shit at houses is dumb but at least there's the rationale of doing so to devalue the properties so that an unscrupulous businessman can snap them up on the cheap. I also disliked how too many of the activities substituted for story missions.

Secondly the enemy gangs in SR2 felt like actual threats. A bunch of hardcore drug dealing voodoo people, Michael Dorn's army and the Yakuza are a lot more compelling to fight than a group of hackers, some pro-wrestlers and some corporate twits.

Lastly to me SR2 is a good action movie in that there are peaks and valleys in the action. It isn't all action all the time because the viewer gets desensitized to constant escalation. In SR3 when the S.H.I.E.L.D. helli-carrier shows up reaction shouldn't be a sigh of resignation rather it should be some degree of excitement. Except it isn't because it represents just another irritatingly implausible obstacle.

Also zombies and Burt Reynolds. Neither where necessary.

Yeah, but why are all the strippers and hookers in Saints Row the Third female? Like, I'm playing as a female Boss, I wander back into my penthouse crib and Pierce and Zimos have hired nothing but female strippers, even if I make the rest of my entire gang female.

If that was me I'd be kinda like, "What gives?"

I see your point about it being the least sexist game on the market, but let's be honest. They only have the balls to put a unique, powerful female character into the game if the player specifically designs one. I know they'd never dare to actually include a character like that or sexualise male characters unless the player very purposefully does it themselves.

Yeah, all these reasons really. I don't actually hate SR3, I just don't want them pushing it much further when it looks like they definitely are. As I summarised it in another thread, there's no denying I loved the absurdly badass stuff like the skydiving bit at the beginning and pretty much declaring war at the end, but I could have done without the farts in jars and hordes of psychotic mascots.

You forgot about "Ho-ing". I'm quite good at that one.

OT: I for one dislike SR3 for Gat's death, all the pointless silliness, and the drop in character customization options, activities, and indoor areas.
