Anyway i like some shows, not anime in general. I cant stand death note and naruto but i love outlaw star and love hina. Frankly no one likes the entire genre in any case, you can like sports but you dont like all sports. Same issue different genre.

being an animator, I kinda cant help but notice that most of every anime is a still frame with moving mouths, they dont actually animate, and its boring to look at. Even the fight scenes are really low budget

some shows in terms of story and context have no idea what they want to do. for example, I watched this show called Rideback, I couldnt tell if they wanted to make a racing show, a war show, a fight the power show, any of them, there was no focus at all, and that show was 12 episodes.

I hate the shows that go as far as 100+ episodes. really? you cant tell your story in less? what about 50? is 50 ok? I know there are some people who want a journey to last long, but I dont want to see every single thing they do ok, please just simplify your plot and focus your development.

Because the animation is nice, and its full of some of the most over the top shit in any medium.

Examples include: Mechs the size of universes, Notebooks that kill people, a martial art centered around poking you opponent to make them blow the f**k up, an afterlife which has a fighting force that absolve good spirits and condemn the bad ones all the way to hell, Pirates made of rubber with an unhealthy obsession for his nakama.

I think the one thing that makes the biggest difference is the freedom that animation provides. A lot of western animation is hindered by the perception that many people have that animation is a "kids-only" medium, similar to video-games, and that seems to not be the case in Japan. There's also the contributing factor that far eastern countries have very different perspectives than our own, so they sometimes tell stories with ideas that we don't do very often in the west. Some anime fans would say that the "freedom" that I'm talking about is unique to Japan, but that's not really the case. Several people in western comics are doing things similar to what anime does, specifically people like Alan Moore or Grant Morrison.

Same, it feels like something I've seen a clip or two out of but never any actual full episodes, and now I'm morbidly curious as to what it is T.T

Also shows like NCIS have a couple hundred episodes where they barely develop the plot at all and are 90% a string of unrelated incidents, and if you like shows like that then I don't really feel that complaining about anime series length is really justified. Particularly when you remember that those shows are 45 minutes long as opposed to around 22 per episode. That puts NCIS being longer than Bleach (subtracting bad filler), and to be honest its plot development is much worse.

Granted I don't watch much TV at all outside of Anime which I mostly watch online, and I only know anything about NCIS because my parents and sister watch it incessantly every night during dinner, I've probably seen each episode 4-5 times at this point, and it is annoying as crap.

I learned it with the help of lessons, and a heavy reliance of Rosetta stone. Anime has only really helped me in slang, certain adjectives and 'sayings?'

Doesn't Rosetta stone use a dialect which is only used in the north and not Tokyo?

Well, I'm also taking lessons (and we use the Genki books) as I plan to go to Japan after I have my bachelor.

Oh, and I watch animes because I like animated movies/shows and they have a wide range of topics.

WEll you basically summed it up: IT just does everything else a bit better.

Characters have more depth, the plot develops with pace, and everything in basically just....well better.

Don't get me wrong I love my cartoons, but when I want plot I look to anime and mostly manga.

Anime is awesome, when done right, but I feel like too many people try to start with some of the more 'over the top' anime, or worst, try to start by watching something that turns out to be a hentai (which I feel gives a lot of us a bad name).

i watch anime and read manga for 7 years now, and i just don't know why i like it so much, i find everything else just plain boring and not worth doing, apart of gaming of course. For me anime is something to relax and watch. i don't like violence, death and blood in my anime, i like comedy, i like, romance and slice of life and i like adventure as long as it's with comedy and happy ending. Anime for me it a main source of entertainment it takes a lot of my free time and i'm fine with it.

I used to be hardcore into it, but I'm honestly just 'meh' about it now.
The hell is wrong with me? I've stopped watching TV altogether, I've never been much of a movie person, nor comics and now I'm less than thrilled by anime. I'm almost a bit scared, tell ya the truth.

I've seen so many threads here on the escapist with the word "why" in the topic, I find it very hard to not make a single-word-post saying "because".

OT: Although I started studying Japanese because of anime, I don't really like or dislike anime. It's like asking whether you like food. Anime ranges from good to bad just like western cartoons, so instantly loving or discarding it "because it's anime" is downright silly.

The reason I started studying Japanese was because anime gave me a window into a different culture. I found it intriguing, because it was different. Being on the topic of different, in a weird twist of fate, because of anime I also got interest in Bollywood movies, but that is a different topic altogether

i like anime because it has giant destructive robots...also they can be creative with their violence (see Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann for destructive robots...for creative violence pretty much look around its almost everywhere in anime)

The formulaic nature of anime storylines irritates me increasingly with the years. But the whole aspect of meticulous visual design in so much anime I continue to find interesting.

That said, sgood story and good visual design are not mutually exclusive. Some stuff, like "Eden Of The East", "Darker Than Black", "Durarara!" and films like "Summer Wars" and "The Girl That Leapt Through Time" manage to be both creative and visually interesting to me.

no, just no, it certainly does not and if you trully believe that i'll presume you are an otaku.

Anime has never done anything better than anyhting else, especially anime of the past ten years which is mostly just ugly, anime dosn't even have good animation to lean on anymore.

But if we wind back the clock to an era where japanese popular media was not shameless mass produced pandering to grotesque fans who actively reinforce every negative stereotype about themselves...hmmm.

I'd have to say that originality is what strikes me; contrasted against the american popular media japan just had so much and it was always wonderfully realised because japan never dismissed the medium of comics or animation as an art form and fostered its evolution into something varied and wonderfully evocative to the imagination.

I guess this mentality created some truly brave works like Tezuka's Buddha(or anyhting by tezuka), Kieji Nakazawa's Bare Foot gen, Tatsumi's the pushman, Shirow's ghost in the shell, Schinchiro Watanabe's Cowboy bebop, Isao Takahata's Grave of the firefliesor Otomo's Akira(or other projects).

because i rekon Anime show's are different to the normal stuff on telly these days. everytime i go onto TV i get bombarded with Ad's and every show having the same plot .
