Saw this article on the news today and was impressed by the sheer data storage this thing has:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8021012.stm

DVD: 4.71 GB
Dual-layer DVD: 8.54 GB
HD-DVD: 15 GB
Blu-ray: 25 GB
Dual-layer HD-DVD: 30 GB
Dual-layer Blu-ray: 50 GB

Holographic VD (HVD): 500 GB!

Thats right, x10's as much as a dual-layer Blu-ray. Questions are: a) How long until its available commerical? b) What sort of data-read rates will it have (the speed at which data can be read off of the discs), and c) What the hell will movies do with all that space? Even HD films's don't really use the whole of the blu-ray disc, and these have much more space.... Super-Dupler-HD, anyone?

I just bought a goddamn blue-ray player, and now they already have advanced! Its like buying a new PC the day the upgraded version comes out. But wait, think of the video games you could put on that!!! The graphics!!!

Well, to be completely honest, graphics don't take up that much space, unless you have an awful lot of cutscenes/movies in HD.

This will be the disk that World of Warcraft will be sold on as one whole package when they're finally finished bringing out expansions.

Holographic VD? Where the hell did this come from?
Anyway, I could see this being used for videogames; more space equals longer play-times, more intuitive levels/weapons/abilities, and better graphics. But for a movie/TV spectrum? C'mon.

I was being sarcastic, but the internet failed me and the text failed to demonstrate that. No one needs a 500GB disc for anything, theirs nothing practical that you could do with it. Until theirs a machine that could actually install/run something of that caliber, theirs nothing that you can do with it. But maybe in another ten or five years.......

hmm...so blu-ray were actually better than HD-DVDs anyway...
Had more storage space, yes. Doesn't matter, I was pointing out the friggin' huge new discs. As in "Blu-rays are big, but wait til you see this!"

I know, I was just surprised that the choice between them was logical...ignore me...

The question really never was whether Blu-Ray is bigger or not, but rather what's enough? For most commercial purposes 15 gigs of space will be so over-the-top that the extra 10 isn't needed. Once games start to really adopt, though, that may be a godsend.

Well, you could use them as backup discs for company networks, heh.

Still, I suppose holographic displays can't be too far off - maybe by the time these guys have the discs ready, HD-Holography will be out and about.

Maybe a full season of a show or something.
True, now you mention it. You could probably fit a whole season in HD onto one of these discs.

By the time this would realistically be commercially viable, digital distribution will have taken over and physical media for movies, music, etc. will be a thing of the past.
