We actually have all the technology needed to "invade" another solar system, although it would take a very very long time for us to get there. Still with enough resources (say from a bigger planet with more metals etc) you could easily construct a large fleet of life sustaining ships that could travel for as long as needed until they found a planet that could sustain life, or even be terraformed.

Yes, we even have the technology to terra form a planet already....we just have not spent the time or materials to do so.

Even if the race was technologically superior to ours we would have a strong defensive advantage and most likely more resources originally then them....especially if they had been traveling for a long time and their ships were geared more for sustaining life then war.

Finally due to the nature of travel through space we would probably have quiet a decent amount of advanced notice before they arrived at our planet. They would need to slow down to a speed that would allow them to enter our orbit before getting to our plant and even using the trajectory of our planets in the solar system to their advantage etc, that would still take quite awhile after they had entered our solar system and were observable by us. That should give us some time to prepare.

If they have some type of alternative travel method through space (not base don science but more on science fiction) then they might also have science fiction like weapons as well.....but taking that for granted seems like cutting your leg off because you stubbed your toe and your afraid it'll get infected and kill you eventually.

If we knew for sure our planet was going to go poof in say 100 years due to our sun exploding or something.....we'd probably build as many life sustaining ships as we could with our current technology and launch them before that happened. It's quite likely any alien race that did show up would have done something similar...and would be desperate for somewhere to live.....and certainly not that prepared for war.

Of course if it was us...we'd load out ships with nukes and basically threaten any other race we met to let us live with them or we'd blow them up. Aliens might do the same with us.......or they might actually not be massively aggressive SOB's and try talking to us first etc. Of course they might just be sentient micro organisms etc and just need to land on our planet to eventually take us all over. Or ants.....a race of super intelligent space ants.

Honestly if we encountered alien insects I don't think we'd end up in peaceful negotiations no matter what. We'd just want to squash em!

Do you have any idea how many bio-warfare labs exist on Earth, whatever the aliens colour, race, creed, sexual orientation or home dimension we either have a bug for it or we can come up with one pretty damned fast. With that in mind any force attempting to invade Earth would be best to just pop in wipe out the population and take the planet, there's a reason we made it to the number spot on the food chain on Earth, and it wasn't our capacity to negotiate...

What? So I just took over the world and aliens come here?
Well, that saves me the time of finding them.

I use my robotic legions which I used to take over the world to destroy them.
I've already got several robotic robot factories set up all over the solar system.

Next step: Off to their planet(s).
I vote for this guy as ruler of earth/future emperor of the intergalactic commonwealth.

Create an armed defense, but put out that the message that this is purely precautionary, and in our human nature. We are open to negotiations, and would much prefer to not have violence escalate.

If they can fly to our planet from their own in another solar system, then they have technology far better than ours. So probably weapons technology too. Id surrender, unless they were out to kill us all. We could never beat them.
consider this scenario, for argumentative purposes: Their civilization paced itself much the same as ours, with technology expanding more rapidly than understanding of the effects it had on the environment. In a last ditch effort, they created a large fleet of sleeper ships, holding the beings on board in cryogenic stasis for hundreds of thousands of years until the ship reached the intended planet.

the scenario requires only a slightly more advanced civilization than our own (successful cryo-stasis, power to last, and the ability to find habitable planets from other star systems), thereby making military force once again a feasible option.
In that case id say try to make peace and exchange technologies and medicine, but remind them that we would fight back, merely as a detterant so they do not exploit us. It would be messy and there would be a lot of issues, but it would be the only sane choice.

Uhh....find out what they want? If they wanted war or some sort of violence, they would have opened up by opening fire.

Why I'd simply place them all in District 9. Problem solved. Right?

I would feel stupid for not believing Commander Shepard when s/he had been warning us of this day for so long.

I would then hop on my super-duper-spaceship-of-awesomeness and travel far, far away. I am god-emperor of the earth, I can do these things.
