Here are a couple examples of social etiquette that I want to quiz you guys on, ready?

You're out of credit on your mobile/cell phone, you ask a friend if you can make a call, how long do you chat for?

for me, I feel guilty if it's over a minute

When passing somebody in a cinema/airplane (etc) do you give the person the crotch or the ass?

I go with the crotch, seems rude to turn your back on somebody at that range

You get on the bus and there is 1 seat left and you're by yourself, do you take the seat or leave it? Maybe go 1 cheek or try to leave as much space between you and the stranger?

I stand, I don't like sitting next to strangers

Any others people want to add?

I'd just use it to get whatever message I'm trying to get across quickly.

In a plane it doesn't matter, when you give the ass to one you're giving the crotch to another. Otherwise I don't really bother noticing.

If it's window, then I'd stand. Otherwise I'd sit down for a while (Unless the stranger is terrifying).

Hmm. Quizzing people somehow suggests you have the answers, and that they are the correct ones. How about, "I'm interested in what you would do in these situations"?

Anyway.

1) I don't have credit on my cell phone. I pay my monthly bill and would never ask to use someone else's for the reason you stated.

2) Back. Being that close to someone and facing them as you pass exposes yourself too intimately with face-to-face contact.

3) I'd take the seat. That's what they are there for, right? I'd give it up for the elderly, or a pregnant woman, or someone with a disability.

Eh? If you have a row seats all facing the same way, how do you give a person both? Are you talking about all the aisle seats? If you are, why not just walk normally?

"why so serious?"

I don't have the right answers, I am asking what you would do in these situations.

I am talking about pay as you go type of contract rather than a monthly. Although in your case of pay monthly, say you forgot your phone.

1) I pay monthly, and when I was on credit I never needed to borrow a phone as far as I remember.

2) I don't see that either way makes a difference unless you are thrusting while you do it.

3) I'd take the seat unless I was only on there for a short space of time. I don't see what it has to do with etiquette though, seats are made for sitting on, and if one is free, then it's for anybody who needs it.

1. I would say what I have to say or ask what I have to ask then hang up, that is what I do with my own phone so it wouldn't change for someone else's phone.

2. Crotch, I find it easier to keep myself further away from the person if I am facing them.

3. Stand, I don't like other people.

1) I'd say the minimum that needs to be said so as not to use up too much of my friend's credit

2) Bum, I'd just feel weird facing a person I'm squeezing by

3) Sit down, I've no problems sitting next to a stranger

1. Be quick about it.

2. Front, Easier to squeeze through without rubbing your ass in their face. Also seems rude.

3. Sit on the edge facing away.

1. How important is the call? I wouldn't even ask if it was anything social. For vital information, I'd get that across and leave it at that. Can't really put a timeframe on it, but I would try to be as brief as possible.

2. I generally turn my back to them, only because I am not comfortable being that close to them in the first place, and would rather not have to look at them too. Edit: I'd like to add here: boobs. It's easier to squeeze past someone without them in the way. In the cinema there is usually the chance to lean over the seat in front, so that's not a problem. As for aeroplanes, why would I need to squeeze past anyone? Why haven't my neighbours stood and moved into the aisle to let me through? I've never been on a flight where this hasn't happened for men and women alike.

3. Stand. I'll only sit if the journey is going to take longer than expected, or is a very long journey to start with. This applies no matter how many seats there are available.

1) I would spend as much time on the phone as to tell the person on the other end my friends number so they can ring me back! Unless it's a friend with a very high number, or infinite free minutes... then I don't care! :p

2) I'm far too polite in this situation... I would expect them to move out of their seat... like I would, or I would probably not go if they look like the type who won't move!

3) I would also stand... I hate sitting that close to strangers! :/

[HEADING=1]New question...[/HEADING]

If you are in a taxi... do you talk to the driver? What do you say?

I talk to them... always go through the normal questions first... (How long you on? Been Busy?) and then usually have a chat...

Doesn't help that if I am in a taxi I am 95% of the time drunk...! :p

If I have to ask them for credit it's got to be reasonably important... 3 minutes maximum, I guess.

When passing somebody in a cinema/airplane (etc) do you give the person the crotch or the ass?
ASS.

Take it, I'll make sure I get my seat's worth unless they smell particularly bad.

If you are in a taxi... do you talk to the driver? What do you say?
I hate talking to taxi drivers, I answer awkwardly if they speak to me. It actually makes me rather nervous, due to social anxiety. It's the same with barbers. Both annoying services where complete strangers feel the need to talk to you. Sorry, I'm not the conversational type so please shut up and get on with the job.

1. 30 seconds. Maybe slightly more, if it's something really long. Also, I don't have long conversations on the phone normally, so it would be weird for both me and the other party to talk for much longer than a minute.

2. Crotch. I don't know why, I'm just used to it.

3. Take the seat. I'll take my chances and hope they don't stab me with a knife or give me leprosy. So far it has happened zero times, so I think there is a chance that not all strangers are evil.

[HEADING=1]New question...[/HEADING]

Well, unless I'm really tired, I'll usually talk to them. Most often, I'm on a taxi when I'm in another city (or after just returning), so I'll go for something along the lines of "how have things been around here" or similar.

1. It's not really an issue of how long specifically you're on the phone. Just don't chat unnecessarily. Although all calls should be short, it should only be for essential calls. If you do need to spend a lot of time talking about something you get the other person to phone you back instead.

2. Either option is equally rude/uncomfortable. I choose arse in face simply because it's easier to sit down that way. You don't have to turn around in an area where you can't stand up. Just make sure to keep as far away from the person as possible when you pass them.

3. That's not really an issue of etiquette, more social awkwardness. I would usually sit down. After all, that's what the seat is for. Sometimes I would keep standing for various reasons, but I wouldn't feel rude taking the seat.

I say what needs to be said then hang up, but I would never ask if it was a social call.

As a timid guy I dislike the idea of pointing my crotch at something I do not intend to have sex with, so ass it is.

I'll take the seat but I wont speak or be happy about it.
If you are in a taxi... do you talk to the driver? What do you say?
Well I'll start with something along these lines.
"Hiya, what's up. I'll be heading ********. So how's things."
Though if nothing developes from there I don't try.

1) Until I've said everything that needs to be said. Alternatively I just ask them to text the person for me.
2)Depends. If its in a coridoor then I'll normally face the wall, if its glass I normally face away, if it means I'll face into someone sitting down or anothe room then I face inwards... generally whatever I feel like.
3) I normally stand, if I'm on the tube or a short bus, but if its a longer bus or tube journey I'll sit. Also depends upon whose sitting next to me; I avoid scary, overly attractive or mental looking people.
4) Hell no, I hate talking to people I don't know well, or have no common ground with.

1. As fast as possible, I will hang up on the person I called if they don't shut up after the message is delivered.

2. doesn't really matter.

3. I'll sit my ass down, if the other passenger has a problem with it, they can stand.

Bonus taxi question!: Depends on the driver, some of the are the conversational type, some aren't... in most cases they are, and that makes the ride less awkward, usually end up talking about cars or good places to eat, or something, there's always SOMETHING to talk to a stranger about if you need a topic to discuss, try food, everyone hasta eat, therefor acceptable topic in any situation, First date? Food. New friend? Food. Get the picture?

1) I don't borrow phones, if I'm out of credit I bu more and if its an emergency I use the payphone...

2) I leap crotch first into most situations and walking past people is no exception...

3) If the person is wearing a long trench coat and making mysterious squelching noises with a bag full of hand lotion next to him I'll stand but otherwise I'll sit down and read...

4) It depends whether they talk first or not...

Talking to an anorexic/bulimic .... oops? Just joking.

On topic. My taxi answer is, I just ignore the driver. I walk everywhere so I am only in a taxi with people I know, so I talk to them. If they choose to talk to the driver I don't say a word.

Not that I have something against taxi drivers but the conversation doesn't involve me and I don't want to butt in.

I'd ask the person I was calling to call me back if it was going to be a long call, or start off explaining Im on a borrowed phone and make it short if possible.

Depends on seating positions and stuff. I'd generally give whatever would least invade that other person's personal space.

I'd sit down. Never know, you might make a new friend! I once sat down on a plane next to a Finnish guy; got chatting away and lost complete track of how long the flight had taken, was perfect!
