societal conventions you hate

It's hard to put down one particular thing, but I just hate being forced to deal with all the societal baggage of being gay. To try to keep it short, there is a lot of stuff straight people in relationships just take for granted that I can't have, things like not having to think twice about who you tell about your relationship, not having to be conscious of being affectionate depending on where abouts you are, not having your relationship treated like it's somehow inferior to most other people's even by a lot of well meaning people, not having to refer to someone who'd otherwise be your spouse as your "partner", not being able to visit your partner's home country without having to lie to the border guards about who you're with and why you're visiting while you see others who've been in relationships a fraction of the time you have getting green cards from marriage almost immediately, etc. etc. It's a fucking drag.

Looking at all the replies in this thread and noticing how so many guys here have chips on your shoulders about women I'm convinced that gay people are treated like shit because society is so bitterly jealous that we don't have to put up with the annoyances of the opposite sex.

Bullseye. I fucking hate suits. I don't see why my cargo shorts and t-shirt combo can't suit every occasion apart from funerals and weddings.
I just had to point out that I love the irony of you posting that with your username.

Wtf, guys, suits are awesome. If they're uncomfortable other than because it's too hot you're not doing it right.

Yaaay, someone who agrees with me. I don't drink often, and I have a tendency to forget things when I do, so everyone's always like, "You had fun," to which I respond, "I wouldn't know. I'll take your word for it."

I'm with the anti-suit brigade I'm afraid. I also don't like shirts or ties. I think it's the formality of it all I hate the most. Oh, and shoes. Dear God do I hate shoes. Boots all the way, even if it does mean I wear pretty much nothing but walking boots everywhere...

EDIT:

Also, this. I've only been drunk once, and I really don't see the appeal...

Then again, I do still remember it, so maybe that was the problem...

Big parties. I love doing stuff with friends but I just don't get the appeal. You just stand around and you can't talk at all because of the music. You CAN dance but god help you if you don't do it just right because we will stare you right out the door. No we won't tell you how it's done right.
I tried plenty of parties and for reasons stated above I was eyeing the exit within an hour every time. I've been told it's because I'm not buzzed yet but I think that's BS because anything is fun when you're buzzed.

Movies, bowling, even summer festivals are fine with me. Generic party nr. 6489? Yeah no thanks you guys have fun though. Sadly this is a pretty big social handicap in a generation where 90% of conversations are about what happened last party, what will happen next party or whats happening at a party right now.

Guys having to ask out girls, seriously why is it that girl just get to give off vague signals while guys have to build up the courage to ask them out, I'd personally find it more attractive if a girl just asked me out.

I find it idiotic that girls are generally discouraged (event by other girls) to hit on a guy.

I've had a theater colleague hit on me and I loved it. Bunch of dinosaurs.

Guess what, I'm surrounded by 50+ committed feminists every day. I've never been chewed out for my behaviour, not once. You know why that is, because I somehow manage to treat women like complex, individual human beings rather than some collective hive mind of unreasonable demands.
That's a problem many guys have, I never really understood what happen to made them think this way. Probably distance.

Apparently eating your meal when it arrives is in poor taste where I live, I wish that to stop NOW. Seriously, if my food arrives why am I supposed to wait three minutes before I start eating? Who decided this anyways?
What the fuck? Where DO you live :S

Apparently in some asian countries leaving a tip is considered bad manners. Not quite sure how that one works either -.-

1. Having to wear clothes
2. It being acceptable to be a fat unhealthy jackass
3. People considering race or gender to be important
4. Society being based around money and class
5. Sexuality/sexual preferences being an issue
6. Lots of other things. Like most of the things. Almost all of them.

People getting their children baptised even when they're non-practising christians/atheists
The reason for that (at least where I live) is because they want their kid to have a choice. There's a second ceremony in elementary school and a third in highschool. Only if you did all 3 you are a full blown christian and are you allowed to get married in church.
These parents have their kids baptised so they can later decide for themselves if they want to do the 2nd and third thingy. If their parents didn't do this the kids would simply not be allowed to do the other 2 even if they wanted to.

Wel technically you can still get baptised at any age but it's quite an ordeal, not to mention emberassing. (yes you have to actually get the water sprinkled on you head and everything. Dunno if you have to be nude though, god I hope not)

Ha you think thats bad? try listening to conversations starting with the line "Im not gay or anything but..." usually to defend gay rights in some way. makes me sick because right off the bat you are implying that there is something undesirable about homosexuality that you must distance yourself from

Agreeing with OP, but the example Id like to give is Jade Goody. This women was a racist, bigoted idiot, who became famous for being such a HUGE asshole on TV. However as soon as she gets cancer, thousands cry and say, "Oh It's So Targic :(", or "jAdE gooDY yUo ArE my Haro!", completely forgetting that she, was in fact, the kind of dumb ***** that lets humainty down. Bring back proper Darwinism, so she could have died a long, long time ago.

The entire concept of xenohate.
Yeah, I'm going to write a huge rant on this so brace yourself.

now, believe it or not, most people are above this, most religious peeps are fine W/ atheists and vice-versa. The same is true for literally EVERY difference in thinking. It's really the people you DON'T hear about that are good.

See, the stems of this problem are sensationalist media, and I'm not just talking about the newsmedia, I'm also talking about day-to-day communications, now people don't talk about what usually happens, people getting along you don't hear about because that's the norm. no, what is an event is what people talk about, and what is unusual is fighting. hence you only hear bad things about the "opposing faction". negative opinions follow, cycle repeats, over and over.

tl;dr, book-cover relationship. don't fall for it.

I'm trying to eliminate this, one little step at a time.

Move out of the states. Depending on where, but at most only 2 of those are a big thing over here in Sweden.

like for instance, before Michael Jackson died all I heard about him was pedophile jokes, left, right and center, now that he's dead he's no longer a dangerous man-child but a great man and tragic figure, "you shouldn't speak ill of the dead" people say, y'know who else died recently? Bin Laden, (I actually think it was kind of a funny coincidence that the US soldiers found Bin Laden about a week after the PSN went down) "crap we can't go online on PS3....I'm bored let's go find Osama" lol

also JOHN LENNON WAS NOT THAT GREAT!!

sorry for the ranting but I'm curious to see if anyone agrees with me about these things or what other societal peeves people have
OP states his opinions as fact. I wonder if there's a connection between this and the accuracy of some of OP's statements.

People have loved Michael Jackson for 3 decades. His death didn't convert any fans. And, last I heard, his child accusers, now all grow'd up, had come forward and said that their parents had pressured them into making the touchy-feely claims.

How about Ringo?

...so, what societal conventions do I hate? How about actual societal conventions?

Wearing clothes around other people. Really inconvenient and prudish.

Noise ordinances. If I can't sleep, no one in this neighborhood is going to sleep.

The persistent affinity people seem to have for live instruments. Ooo, you actually make music. I have a machine that makes my music for me!

Not being able to stand in my own second-floor window, minding my own naked business, and pleasure my own body while I watch my own passersby. This should be legal, like, faster than heroin.

People who expect me to behave :p

The fact that i have to be super nice to everyones kids that are running around in public like idiots. I shouldn't have to act all nice to your kids who run up to me in a restaurant. I don't like kids that's why i don't have them. You should keep your kids to yourself and stop them from running all over bothering strangers.

On a similar note: listen, its rush hour. I know you need to move your baby from A to B, but what happened to those little strollers you could fold up? Every day i have to squeeze past gigantic SUV strollers on the bus that take up three seats and the whole aisle. This isn't ok. It's selfish.

I second demonised nudity, sexual preferences being a problem, plus it being so hard to discuss a lot of related topics even with relative internet anonymity.

Another convention I hate is how it's considered impolite to disagree with someone, or just try to discuss the subject. If you do at worst you get insulted, at best you're ignored like a troll, to the point that I ended up acting and thinking like one.
I know we're all entitled to our own opinion, but when ones opinion is really proven to be harmful how entitled are you ?

(1)I also hate reciprocation. Some people are part of a persecuted minority and feel the need to defend every persecuted minority despite the fact that (2)they're not all looked down on for no reason. The other way round is even more despicable; when someone accepts your differences in the hopes that you'll accept theirs...except (3)theirs are despicable.
(1) I love reciprocity!

** both apologize to the earlier poster who said he hated people who used "big werds." **

(2) I would say that no minority is persecuted for no reason. They are, however, universally persecuted for shitty reasons, and persecuted by sub-human racist fucks. This should be a requisite for obtaining your piece of the pie: let's see how you treat other people.

(3) I would need elaboration on what differences you're talking about. Do you think Hip-Hop and soul food are despicable? Or are you referring to us Gypsies with all our baby-stealin'?
