Stop taking protein supplements
Move to cardio training, not weight training.

Yeah, I'm with you on this.

A person who regularly hits the gym, putting all kinds of proteins In wouldn't get any noticeable effects off 17 cans, no matter how quickly or slowly you drank them. It's like saying I'm a marathon runner but I had a big Mac and gained another chin.

Coke is caffeine and sugar (plus other crap), it's not lard. I'm also pretty sure an equal measure of alcohol will do more damage if drunk in the same manner.

Just for the record, I've drunk fizzy drinks since I can remember and until I was 18 I was super skinny, I've now packed on a bit too much weight but it's not like stopping drinking coke would make me the perfect weight.

Increasing sugar consumption is linked to increased risk of tooth decay, diabetes, cancer and obesity - but not everyone experiences this the same way.

Certainly, choosing a drink like 330ml Coca Cola, which has around 33g of sugar (7 tea spoons) and drinking two of these a day is consuming 2/3 of your recommended daily intake of sugars before you even begin to consider sugar from anything else you eat/drink . The health impacts of choosing this as a regular diet can be extreme and this could not be recommended for anyone, particularly given the availability of non-sugar varieties and other beverages.

With 2 cans you've also consumed 280 calories - which is over 10% of the average man's intake requirements and would represent a fair workout to burn it off, all things being equal. And if you're putting on weight like 30kg in 18 months all things are not equal. If you're not working that off, it's going on as even more weight. How well you can pull off weight gain depends on your youth, workout and build. Eventually, and particularly as you get older, it won't be muscle any more, it will be flab.

Fruit juices, chocolate milk can be just as bad for sugar and calories.

What bugs me is the food marketed as "fat free" that have masses of sugar in them. The sugar lobby is powerful and influenced government to blame fats for obesity which is now reflected in a lot of western consumer attitudes and marketing.

Even worse than alcohol you say? Well okay then, I'll just start having a large tumbler of scotch whiskey with every meal rather than those sugary devil soft drinks.

"Hic! Isssht for my healthsshh." *thunk*

Everything in moderation my friend. Blaming an inanimate object for your own obesity is just plain illogical.

Depends if you drink soda with sugar or sugar substitutes, I guess. I drank around 2 liters of Pepsi Max(without sugar) for several years. Never got fatter. Went to only drinking water half a year ago and I'm still the same size(well, I have been working out).
Substitutes pushes the risk of getting prostate cancer through the roof though, among other things, iirc.

As for revelations... yes. When I decided to start working out I begun actually looking at what was in the food I ate. Everything is either full of sugar or bursting with carbonhydrates.

depends on the person, really. i used to drink 3+ cans of soda per day, but the only fat i have is from lack of exercise. and even then, its not much.

i did recently stop drinking soda, though. ill only drink it if im at a movie or a restaurant.

People use Coke to remove rust from car engines.
Just think about that for a moment.

Yeah you put on weight, body building is anaerobic. Meaning you don't burn enough calories to lose weight. You need a good cardio workout if you want to lose weight, if running isn't your thing, try bike riding or swimming. An hour a day and you can keep right on with your two cans of coke. Just remember to brush your teeth.

Doesn't matter what you eat, just how much of it. One glass of soda a day will do nothing to you IF you get sufficient exercise.

People that say "I have super fast metabolism hurr hurr I can eats whatever I wants lol~" are so full of shit. You are NOT some kind of super-human being with a genetically superior body. You have the EXACT same internal organs as other people, you just live a different LIFE.

Look at the calorie count before you eat something; but wait! Also look at the servings per container. You might see "150 calories" and think oh, no big deal. But then it'll say something like, 4 serving per container next to it. Which of course means if you drink that whole can, it'll be SIX HUNDRED (600) calories. THAT'S AN ENTIRE DINNER WORTH OF CALORIES. IN A DRINK.

I burn like 1200 calories a day at my job. I WORK MY ASS OFF. So I can drink TWO glasses of soda a day if I want without gaining ANY weight.

However... if you're an unemployed individual, and you play games all day. Two glasses of soda is like having an extra meal worth of fat. However... soda doesn't fill you up. In fact, it makes you thirsty as it's a diuretic. So often times, people will CHUG it.

So I agree, soft drinks are one of the worst things you can put in your body, because they are

1) Highly addictive

2) Delicious

3) Extremely, extremely fattening

Start looking at what you eat (based on a 2000 calorie diet a day) and you might just see yourself reaching 2000 calories before you even made it to lunch time. This means its time for a change.... or time to see yourself continue to gain.

I hope I don't come off as some snobby vegan or something, I'm in fact struggling with losing weight myself, I learned this stuff the hard way.

However... its working. I've lost 40 pounds this year, and I hope to lose another 40 at least.

lolnope. Vodka and paint thinner. I win. Nearly everything's bad for you if you don't exercise enough to counter its effects. I've heard coke in particular can cause fat to build up around your heart and weigh it down so much that it becomes unable to reliably pump blood.

Exactly what I was about to say. Protein shakes/supplements are very caloric and if you're not doing any cardio, expect to put on a lot of fat.

You could use coke as a form of carb back loading to minimise the negative effects of it on your physique if you really wanted to keep it in your diet. Though in all honesty, it's not worth keeping it in there. What I do is I think of food primarily as fuel rather than something that you eat for some sense of fulfilment it becomes really easy to keep the diet clean.

I'm doing my personal training certification at the moment so if you want some tips for diet and workout programming give me a shout and I'd be more than happy to help.

I'm one of the lucky ones and no matter what I shove in my body, I stay skinny. I've been sitting at 84Kg for years now, even when I was rowing competitively. I couldn't put on weight if my life depended on it. That being said, I still do eat healthy. Not by some forced regime, I just prefer healthy food over something super fatty and sweet all the time.

Not to be rude but this is a long way from scientific evidence, I don't see any specific data on the effect it's had on you and even if you have undergone physical changes there's no guarantee the cola is responsible. If you were drinking regular coke (i.e. non diet) then there's a good chance it will have had a negative effect on you as they contain huge amounts of sugar (about 40% of your recommended intake in a 500ml bottle if I remember correctly) and there's an increasingly large body of research that says that sugary foods are just as dangerous as high-calorie foods. Regardless 30 cans of coke over a month shouldn't be capable of making you gain multiple rolls of fat on their own, I would suggest that there is some other change that is also responsible or perhaps that you are overstating the level of change.

Soft drinks are certainly worse for the average person than just drinking water but there's a list of reasons as long as my arm why alcohol is much worse and it's just plain ridiculous to say otherwise based on personal, anecdotal, unscientific evidence. Just looking at calorie content wine has more calories per ml than cola - if you've drank 5-6 bottles of wine across that month that will have the same calorie content as your 30 pack of cola cans; and that's not even going into the other forms of damage alcohol can do to a person.

Damn, I was totally going to say alcohol because technically speaking that is the worst thing you can drink.
Er usually I would agree with you OP but it depends on what type of soft drink you're slithering down your throat. I would say that I don't care much for soft drinks at all either but I don't think I could live without these two things in my life:

I've come to realize I don't like meat all that much, and I'm pretty sure I could live without it. I can't even eat chicken anymore and I never at beef or lamb. I don't know about vegetarianism, but the very least I could be a Pescetarian that way I can still enjoy my sushi from time to time. If I wasn't so poor and relent on my family to eat, I would try it. Maybe when I'm finally on my own I will.

On a semi-unrelated note, I learned recently that some people are actually turned off by the word "organic". That blew my mind.

Thankfully I don't have much of a sweet tooth so I don't drink it much.
That said, all I eat is fast food, noodles and other deliciously unhealthy things. My metabolism is incredible though and despite getting takeaway at least 3 times a week, and otherwise eating junk food all the time, I am still underweight somehow.

OP, I totally agree. I had a similar experience, at the end of University I was drinking full sugar energy drinks and eating sugary snacks regularly and ended up putting on 3 stone over a period of roughly 6 months, on the 30th of May I was 16 st 2 pounds. Its only after I finished University cut down on the snacks and pop and joined a gym that I've lost some of the weight, and even then I'm still lingering at 14st 4 pounds. The first stone was easy to lose, I started running and radically changed my diet (Which caused headaches and a general lack of energy for a couple of weeks), though since then its been an uphill struggle to get rid of those last 2 stone.

N.B. My new favourite drink? Milk and Water, both drinks are so good for you, especially water.
