Softcore Gamer

I thought a Softcore Game would imply that the game is happening but not truly show the game being played.

I'm sick and tired of people saying they're softcore gamers when they're not. Softcore gamers have these qualifications:

1. You only play games that other softcore gamers recommend you.
2. You play for a few minutes, in between doing chores or homework.
3. When you buy your children games for their XBox 360, you wonder why they're upset when you buy them Cooking Mama for the Wii.
4. Sudoku online is what you consider a pretty hardcore game.

I've read a lot of your posts, I don't always agree with you, but I've always respect your opinion. Though this post has me a bit puzzled.

Are you referring to the Farmville phenomenon or something else? My mom plays bejewelled and things of that nature and I would barely consider her a 'softcore' gamer by my standards.

In my experience I've always viewed softcore gaming as a means to game without caring. In other words, someone who can get onto CoD and not care about their K ratio or if they win or lose, just as long as they have fun.

The thing I see happening with gaming between people, like us, who game constantly, is that our industry has grown much more quickly than our definitions of what has been happening. In other words, your definition of "softcore" gaming fits your structure, but not necessarily mine.

I vote we petition Webster dictionary to get definitive definitions of just what we're talking about.

Erm anyway. I have absolutly no idea where I stand in the gaming community. I'll start by saying I still havent played Halo Reach, Black Ops, AC Brotherhood, Minecraft and I dont give a shit what Steam is doing next. But at the same time. I f***ing love computer games and commit my heart and soul to the ones I do play.
I also dont fit the description listed at the start of this topic.

So all in all if I were to choose a side to this on-going war I would have to go with Casual Gaming =)

So a softcore gamer is one who plays for fun? And competition comes secondary to said fun?

You know I just had another wacky off the wall idea. Maybe Websters doesn't have a definition for "hardcore" "softcore" or "casual" gamers because all these are meant to do is either insult one group or stroke another groups ego. But have no value to anything other than that. But hey if you feel the need to call yourself a "Hardcore Gamer" because that is all your life has amounted to and without that label you feel you are nothing who am I to judge? Just please don't try and impose those values on the rest of us who fit into the "hardcore gamer" definition but are more than just "hardcore gamers."
