If you were at the furthest point of the universe from something you would not be able to see it.

Universe is 930 Ym
Visible universe is 140 Ym, from any point, light can only have travelled 140 Ym in the time it's had.

OT: I like space's vastness.

There's even a story linked on the page about a mega-storm that will hit once the sun reaches 'maximum power', which to me makes it sound like the Death Star.
I heard about this; apparently it's going to cause every electrical appliance on Earth to fail, causing us to be plunged back into the Dark Ages. Presumably this means that the Sun's power rating will be well over 9000 when it happens.

My favourite thing about space? Probably the sheer mind-boggling immensity of it, because that means that the odds of us being alone in the universe are astronomically (har har) unlikely. I long for contact with extraterrestrial life. As long as it's not the Borg, because that would be a very bad thing.

Also, the Eye of God nebula. It's just amazingly beautiful.

I really hope that if there are any other friendly lifeforms out there that would be able to visit our planet, they're at least smokin' hot and anatomically correct.

Not hard for large solar wave to reach earth and i wish i could see that light show.

EDIT:

It's just so damn vast. Huge. Incomprehensibly massive. Hell, just one thing out there, like a quasar or a supernova, could be completely outside our realm of understanding just because of how BIG it is. How much energy is involved. How many times we'd die if we were caught in it. Being completely dwarfed, even by a so-called "dwarf star!"

Call me simple, but that's what I think is the most impressive thing about space.

Black holes, they can be any size, and no matter what they all suck in everything.

We can all die at any moment if a tiny black hole just waltzed through your room.
actually this is untrue. a small "micro" black hole (like you put it, one that could fit in a room) would explode in mere seconds, spreading whatever matter it had sucked in around you room in pulverized form.

but yeah, regular black holes are serious business. thankfully there is much free space (and potentially inhabitable planets) where there aren't any.

That. The idea of a black hole is pretty damn scary too. What is on the other side of it?

It's only going to cause aurora, at the poles, not really worthy of the tsunami title it's getting. If it cuts out electricity then, yeah.. but it aint, so no worries.

My faveourite thing about space... the size, or pulsars, tiny highly magnetised, spinning corpse of a star, a teaspoon of it weighs millions of tons, because the star it used to be, condenses into a relatively tiny space, increasing it's density billion times over

i raise you this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blazar

it's gotta be fucked up always have a high powered energy beam looking your way, no matter where you are.

oh, and they potentially hold answers to superluminal speeds. i don't believe anyting scientific could be more awesome.

I like Stars, they are awesome.

To the whole 2012 thing for all the people saying if they could have predicted the end of the world they would have predicted their own: They didn't even pretend to predict anything, 2012 is when their Long Calender ends. There is another Calender after it.

Seriously people.

Edit: If you think about it there doesn't have to be an edge of the universe. Space (as in the black stuff) is just that, "Empty Space". Sure there's a whole bunch of crap in it around us and radiating outwards but space itself is the lack of anything, it's not made up of anything. It would be weird if it did end as it would be the end of nothing if you see what I mean.

Gimme a break with this whole 2012 thing. If the Mayans knew a damn thing about anything at all, they would have ended their calender in 1697 when the Spanish handed to them their ass on a plate.
Asses topped with smallpox and stuffed with influenza. My favorite.

I don't understand all this fuzz about things that could go wrong and we will all be dead.
Even my evil doorstep could be my death if I manage to trip over it and break my neck and would agree with me in that process. Why do people always need to fear these kinds of things? If they happen, they happen. You don't stop it by worrying about it. If I would think of all the things that could happen to me or you all day long, I couldn't pay any attention to the traffic that I pass.

i find black holes to be fascinating, especially their strong warping of time around them. if you were to dangle yourself just about the event horizon of a black hole (by hanging on to a rope dropped from a ship keeping itself a certain distance away, or something) for a year, 10,000 years would have passed on earth.

Sign me up for a virgin galactic flight and a large dose of telekinesis, please!

Fusion. Just all the mass, pressure, and heat that needs to be applied is amazing!

I am pretty sure you don't know what a black hole is.

Uhh, a black hole can't just come out of nowhere. A black hole is made of mass like the other 4% of the universe. If you buddy turned into a black hole then there would be no danger. He didn't gain mass so his gravitational field didn't increase in strength. If the sun imploded into a black hole then we would be fine. The solar system would not be sucked into it. The media has blown them out of proportion. PM me and I can elaborate more.

The fun part is if you go beyond that you see the universe happen. Like, all of time. Go deeper and you actually get torn in half because of the difference of gravity from the two halves of your body.

I've always wanted to see an Aurora, but I don't live near enough to the North Pole to do so. (Apparently, you don't just have to be in Canada, but in the balls-cold part of Canada)

It's good to hear that this won't be too severe - I read the title and feared for the worst (as I usually do - panic first, ask questions later).

Of course I don't mean anthropomorphic creatures. While that would be a bit awesome, I would perfer to see a planet full of wildlife. No supreior race, just some wildlife and exotic flora.

In the 70s, Storm of the X-Men could use her weather powers to sail on the solar wind. This was retconned because it makes no sense, but the hilarity remains.
Didn't Count Dookoo [I probably spelled that wrong, but I have the self-respect not to check =P] use a similar arrangement on his spaceship in one of the prequel films?

On a tangential note, progress has been made with force-fields. This will make long-range space-travel much more feasible since astronauts won't get cooked.

Maybe we will get super powers! :F

If I say that about everything eventually it will happen!
