Is it just me that plays a bunch of GBA games on the NDS?
I can recommend a vast list of very good playable GBA games.

As for NDS titles:

Yoshis Island DS
Hands down one of the best platformers around

Nanostray
Pretty good solid shooters á la R-Type.

Worms 2 Open Warfare
Probably one of the funniest and intuitive Turn-Based Strategy games. If you lvoed 2D worms, you'll love this one.

Megaman ZX.
They're pretty good if you liked Megaman or the Zero-franchaise.

Metroid Prime Piball
Fun little time-waster

Nah, I still play GBA games on my DS when I'm on the move. I still have a GameCube though with the GBA player expansion thing too so I can play my GBA games on the big screen :D

The DS can play five Castlevania games:

Dawn of Sorrow (DS)
Portrait of Ruin (DS)
Circle of the Moon (GBA)
Harmony of Dissonance (GBA)
Aria of Sorrow (GBA)

Six Castlevania games come October thanks to Order of Ecclesia (DS).

When not murdering vampires, I'm a huge addict for a little game called New York Times Crosswords. It has a thousand authentic NYT Crosswords, so it makes for virtually endless fun.

Advance Wars: Days of Ruin and Advance Wars: Dual Strike are also very good.

New Super Mario Bros is really underrated, I'd highly recommend it.

Avoid Star Fox Command though, it sucks the big one :(

Lost Magic
I tried to play this but I really don't think the creators actually played the game before releasing it. Did they have testers?
Never blame testers! We find them, whether the devs fix them is another matter entirely!!

Advance Wars = fun forever.
Anything in the Pheonix Wright series as well.

Don't know how you feel about puzzle games, but Picross DS is fantastic. I've lost hours to that game.

Sonic Rush and its sequel are the best Sonic games going around this generation, and check out the games other forumers have mentioned. Grimoire of the Rift is damn awesome, shame about the stoyrline being basically non existant, but the gameplay is the best in the series (imo).

Seems all I play in terms of gaming now are either on portables or PC, so I have a LOT of suggestions.

Lock's Quest (Think Tower Defense + ability to fight, have summons, etc. Frantic but fun)
Castlevania (truth be told, I like PoR best, but both of them are nice with OoE to look forward to as well)
Advance Wars: DoR (AW:DS was stupidly broken, but the grittier one is a nice title)
Front mission First (or 2089 if you understand Japanese. Both games are REALLY fun TBS)
Shiren: the Wanderer (If you like Rogue-like RPGs, then this is probably the BEST one out there commercially.)
Izuna 2 (Second-best Rogue-like, it's pretty innovative with a nice crafting system but a bit short)
Etrian Odyssey 2 (the first one wasn't bad, but the second one kind of trumps it in many ways. Classic sort of dungeon crawler, lasts you a while)
Osu! Tatakae Ouendan 2/Elite Beat Agents (2nd one uses innovations found in the first one, but both are good (at least, in theory and not songs))
Phoenix Wright (of course...)
Hotel Dusk: room 215 (again, of course...)
Civilization Revolution (It's no Civilization, but it's one of the best approximations out there))
N+ (for random seconds/minutes in your day)
Tactics A2 (if you're going to get it, get 2 and not one. It's not a bad game, but the story is..definitely lacking)
Puzzle Quest (kinda broken, but still quite fun)
Meteos (Duh...if you can find it, get it)
Planet Puzzle League (What's that? Tetris Attack with Multiplayer??? Awesome :))
Age of Empires (Again, it's no AoE, but it's a nice approximation)

Now for the Japanese stuff...
Dungeon Explorer: Warrior of the Ancient Arts (It's probably available in the US, just haven't seen it. It's very much like Diablo, multiplayer is sadly lacking though)
Time Hollow/Sigma Harmonics (SH is better, but both have sort of this "point-n-click" adventure mystery thing around them)
Rhythm Tengoku Gold (Fun to play, a VERY good import (you need to know like 3? words: Taachi (touch), hajiku (flick), and one more (the word for lifting your stylus))
Ys 1 & 2 DS (It's a guilty pleasure of mine, not everyone likes Falcom, but it's a good collection)
ASH (Archaic Sealed Heat. The game is a FUN TBS/RPG game, but the character designs look as bad as Fire Emblem DS)
Fire Emblem DS (Of course...)
Disgaea DS (Coming out, both in NA and JPN, big title)
There's a couple more, don't come to mind atm tho

Lastly, GBA games...
Riviera: the Promised Land (Dating-sim meets RPG, it's better than it sounds)
Yggdra Union (FUN game, a bit strange to get into tho)
Ninja Five-O (It's REALLY cheesy but also fun to mess around with)
Golden Sun 1 & 2 (Of course)
Hmm...there's more, just can't think of many off the top of my head.

If you could specify what genres in particular (I know you said RPGish, but perhaps some other games on systems that you like?), I'll be able to give you a pretty good rundown of Eng/Jpn titles available (Yes, I am a handheld nerd).

Elite. Beat. Fucking. Agents (American or Japanese version)

I swear, this game was the most fun I've ever had on a handheld gaming platform.

Buy the fucking game.

NOW

If you do not get this game, you cannot call yourself an owner of a Nintendo DS!

Has no one mentioned the Best Mario Kart for a portable device?

Mario Kart DS!
True.

Thing is, it's best if played with friends, and it isn't very innovative. Except for maybe the "blowing-into-microphone-gives-you-bonus-lives" bit.

Its not innovative but it sure is fun! Isn't that what Mario Kart is about? I like Single-Player but at least it supports online for some non 10 feet away multiplayer.

Sonic Rush is pretty underrated. I paid $10 for my copy and it's a nice change from RPGs.

Contrary to a previous post it is Chrono Trigger (not Chrono Cross) that is coming to DS and it will be out before Christmas.

If they ever bother to translate Tales of Innocence into English you'll want to check that out.

Thanks for the correction. I put Cross in one of the posts and Trigger in the other. I'm currently playing through CC again at the minute and got muddled up. Cheers!

While you have the right sentiment, I would say you're not going far enough.

If you have not played EBA to completion, your life is a meaningless void. You may not know it, but trust me, it is.

Buy the fucking game.
