I've noticed I tend to gravitate towards lite-RPGs when it comes to board games, and, seeing as though the Dark Souls board game comes out next year (and I don't want to seem like a communist, considering most lite-RPGs are co-op), are there any board games you doods recommend that can be played solitaire?

P.S. By that, I mean legitimately (I.e., don't have to play multiple roles at once to play by myself).

Mage Knight (not to be confused with MK: Ressurection) is really good for solo. I suggest getting The Lost Legion expansion, however. As it adds a whole lot more replayability and is probably the best of all the expansions. Shades of Tezla is fun ... but the quality of the components is kind of hit and miss.

Mage Knight is RPG/territory control/deckbuilding/army construction/exploration type of game that just works. It shouldn't, it should be a mess, but it is *awesome*. No other game makes you feel like such an epic hero/anti-hero/villain.

Mistfall is also really clever solitaire game. Warhammer Quest: The Adventure Card Game is actually pretty decent, too. But it lacks the Euro-style feel of Mistfall and Mage Knight where you don't have any dice determining the success of actions (in part) and the only randomness is in the cards you select and the deck you build.

Mage Knight sounds cool, gotta put that on the wish list.

It's definitely a gamer's game.

SU&SD probably did the most accurate review of the product. If you love RPGs, if you love depth of gameplay and sheer abundance of options measured by your capacity to eke out the greatest effectiveness of the cards you play? Then Mage Knight is for you ... it will kick your arse, but as soon as you play three games of it you'll definitely make it your chosen RPG 'quickfix' type of game.

It works well with one or two other players, but Mage Knight is odd like that that it gets less entertaining the more players you have. I know other gamers who literally have a game prepped in their cellar or games room ... all parts pre randomized so that they can just immediately begin a new adventure again. Just because the solo game is that good.

Back when I was a kid, I was into choose your own adventure books. There were some of them that actually were pretty much solo tabletop games - you generally have a map with figures to move around and probably some tokens to place all usually bound by some sort of resource cost. A friend of mine had an Alien inspired one where the map was the ship or a base and you had to clean it, I believe (you played a marine or a group of them). I had a medieval fantasy game where you had several nations (humans, orcs, elves and dwarves, I think) which was like Civilisation-lite in boardgame format. They were still CYOA books, though, so you'd be leafing through making choices that lead to various events, however the events would involve the strategic map.

If I remember correctly, that genre of choose your own adventures was called "strategic" or maybe "tactical" - something along those lines. I don't know if they are still going but it sounds like what you're looking for.

Kingdom Death: Monster can be played with 1 player totally fine, the game actually says its for 1-6 players. The monsters interactions are all done via a card system so you don't need a GM or anything.

You would be controlling four survivors at once, but I usually play with two players and therefore use two survivors each and its not a problem.

Any that fit my criteria to a better degree? Again, I don't want to seem like a communist.

This is a little further away then pure RPG style but I would suggest Eldrich Horror.

Since people mentioned solitaire, Legendary (Marvel deckbuilder) can be played solo.
