Well sense I've been switching between Gaming Discussion and Off Topic I've noticed that:

Gaming Discussion has 40189 threads and 1597276 posts

Off Topic has 42002 threads and 2143601 posts

Jobs has 47 threads and 261 posts

So, apparently most of use spend more time in Off Topic even though this is a website related to gaming and we aren't looking for jobs.

Actually, the Jobs thread is far, FAR more recent than the other two you mention, which is the reason for its low content in comparison.

As for why Off-Topic has the most threads/posts... well, that should be self-explanatory if you've been here long enough...

Off Topic threads either bomb or get tons of replies, where gaming they'll often just get a decent amount then die. I guess Off Topic has greater range.

cool observation, bro

In all seriousness though, this is blindingly obvious if you hang around. We like to...diverge.

Tangents are fun!

Off topic can encapsulate many things, while gaming encapsulates one thing - gaming. We technically talk about gaming the most as Off Topic refers to a number of topics.

Escapist just seems more like a general site of nerd. Be it games, comics, DnD, the internet in general, and tech.

to be honest, most of my (relatively few) posts have been in political discussions. i can definitely see how the not-gaming sections are so popular.

In this world, there's more random crap than games, so if we talk about every gaming thing we think of and every random thing we think of there'll be more random things to talk about.

I guess what I'm saying is, there's a lot more random crap than gaming crap.

Off-Topic has the best and most interesting variety of topics, the games disscussion is a bit boring.
This essentially. It's not an observation exclusive to The Escapist's forums either, as I explained in a previous post of mine on a thread which also brought this topic up:

Kongregate [http://www.kongregate.com/forums] has the same issue with their Off-Topic forum, so does Ultimate Guitar [http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/forum/] with The Pit (their Off-Topic forum), so does Super Cheats [http://forums.supercheats.com/index.php] with their General Boards, so does Newgrounds [http://www.newgrounds.com/bbs/] with their General forum, so does Weebl's Stuff [http://forums.weebls-stuff.com/] with their General forum. That is essentially every forum I've ever visited in my life with the exception of The Escapist's sister site, Warcry [http://www.warcry.com/forums/], whose Off-Topic is in the top three most active forums.
The main reason is that Gaming Discussion has a limited number of topics, as would pretty much any other forum based around a specific topic and including the other forums that this site has. Off-Topic is meant to be all the possible and acceptable topics minus any topic with a devout forum to it. And when you have forums even as varied as Kongregate and Ultimate Guitar with the number of boards that they have, the vast majority of topics will be in that remainder of discussions that gets deemed suitable for Off-Topic.

This as well. If you're going to compare our other forums to Off-Topic and Gaming Discussion, the only fair ones to compare it to are The News Room and Featured Content, as to my knowledge they're the only ones that have been here as long as the other two have which are still around.
