I would totally agree with you, if I hadn't seen so many enemies that, basically, end the same way. It doesn't look like a deep philosophical commentary on a dystopian future, it looks like they couldn't figure out how to tell the story they wanted to tell in the actual setting they had created. NGE is another poster boy for this. What happens at the end of the anime doesn't have any basis on the beginning. They even start re-appropriating flashbacks to new use.Limie said:

I completely understand where you are coming from. Plot balances in dytopic films really irk me. There has to be a balance between interpretation on the audience's part of the plot and the actual plot. There are a lot of films in general that think by leaving out the plot the leave a wide birth for philosophical intepretation on the audienc's part, but to me it ends up sounding like they are trying to be clever or, as though they knew how to start the story and where it was going to end, but couldn't figure out the middle. The latter happens a lot is series films/books, such as the latter matrix films and Harry potter. The director/author has a distinct start and end point but a not very well defined middle that sometimes does nothing for the plot. Ergo Proxy really needed to provide some back story of how the world became to be how it is for it to be "complete" to me. The general plot was not missing but the background was. I would still put it in the catogory "worth a watch". Incidently, have you watched any of the other anime I have recommeded? Most are subject to taste and may not be for everyone but, they are still worth a watch.Zechnophobe said:

If you want an anime with a depressing theme go with Serial Experiments Lain, Boogiepop Phantom, and Pet Shop of Horrors, for slightly depressing but with monsters and giant robots of course go Evangelion. Oh yeah there was a really depressing anime movie about some starlet wannabe who gets her life wrecked trying to make it big, I think it was called Blue, its been years though.
Oh yeah, totally agree with the guy above Wolf's Rain is awesome, at least if that is the one I remember that is an awesome take on little red riding hood in a dystopian police state.

I would recommend Gankutsuou
Japans take on the Count of Monte Christo. It has a unique artstyle, and it fits your prferences in multiple ways since it sets the story in a futuristic world and i definitly dont have to mention the depressing theme if you have already read the story sometime.

If you liked DBZ, you might like Yu Yu Hakusho. Toward the later years of DBZ's release, Yu Yu Hakusho cropped up and went toe to toe with it in popularity, taking a large amount of fans who had grown fatigued of DBZ's story. I don't know if I would call it genre-defining, but it might be something worth looking into.

I'm not sure if anybody else mentioned it, but I didn't see it in any of the previous posts.
It's essentially the story of an alienated early twenties guy living in Tokyo. He's kind of a shut in and has a number of other psychological hang-ups. It's also an interesting cross section of the anime industry and some of the demographics that patronize it.
It also helps if you identify with psychologically damaged protagonists.
