New band I discovered while looking for more progressive 'metal-ish but not too metal-y' music

Those vocal harmonies + synth in the intro gave me some serious goosebumps

It's no secret that I'm not big into popular music, not just "Pop," but most of your generally popular music like R&B, Rock 'n Roll, Country, etc. But I heard this song on the radio, and it just vibed with me, the chorus mainly, the way the word "folded" just sort of floats out there. I decided to add it to my Spotify playlist, and alas, it came with the official music video... I think I'm a bigger fan of the video than the song.

One of my favorite bands, Karnivool, released a new album recently, after a 13 year wait. Unlike another band I can think of that made us pine for 13 years, I think this one was worth that wait. And with a new album comes a new tour, and this time it passes through my neck of the woods. Specifically, tomorrow. Got my tickets. I've been waiting for 15 years to see these guys, so both anxious and excited.

Anyway, song from their new albun. I didn't like it much upon first listen. Seemed a bit too soft and poppy compared to their usual fare, but it won me over after a few plays. And that outro, dear fucking god

I really, really hope they close the set with this tomorrow

DJ Shadow is going on tour for the 30the anniversary of his objectively classic album "Endtroducing..." and he's coming to Ft. Worth, TX, about an hour west of me.

No, I'm not excited. Not excited at all to perhaps see one of the most crucial artists from the formative years of my musical development playing those classic songs live. Not excited at all. Meanwhile, I'm sweating blood at the thought I might actually get to meet him because the venue is small and "intimate" per several reviews.

Ok, full disclosure... I'm excited. If I get to shake hands with DJ Shadow, I will lose my fucking mind.

You don't have to like rap music to appreciate the lyrical craft here. This shit goes HARD for Pennywise.

After listening to a 60sish recording of neuroscientist Margaret Howe’s present a live-in language study with a dolphin called Peter who makes human toddler noises while explaining in depth his previous moments of frustrated horniness while she jacks him off for science, leading to the broader group of scientists then deciding to dose the creatures with LSD as part of their NASA funded project, leading to it falling apart as members quit and the eventual (scientifically agreed upon) conscious suicide of Peter the dolphin....internet has got me tapping out early today lol - just one last thing...

Ah a man of distinct and acquired taste I see. Though personally a tad partial to the Murderous clowns with a bit of melodramatic working class flair and opium addictions hehe

Just ran across this group completely by accident. I'm not sure what to make of them. The music is definitely good, but it is also really out of left field for me.
What does the Escapist think? I'm genuinely curious as to other people's reaction.

Hmm, really interesting. Kinda bluegrass... I guess. I think I like it.
Kinda puts me in mind of Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats.

Ok, so as threatened in the Mixtape thread, here's my 90's "highschool" playlist.

Released in the 80's, but GnR were at their peak of fame early 90s, so I'm going to go with this, because Appetite for Destruction will always be their best album.
As an incredibly dorky 13yo in 1990, sitting there painting 40K figures, this painted a very alluring picture of an exciting world of sex, drugs and rock and roll...and I wanted in! In retrospect, I probably should have stayed painting Warhammer.

Death/Thrash from 91
Found my tribe and was of course an absolutely insufferably vocal proponent of it being the best musical genre ever, and everything else was shit. Especially rave music. Boy, was I a dick. Song's still really good though.

Pioneers of gothic metal, 92
Dammit teenage romance was a confusing mess that I did not deal well with. Still occasionally regret that fuck up.

Ok, so this is the 60's, but hear me out...The Doors film with Val Kilmer came out in 1991, reigniting interest in the band, so I feel I can justify this one.
I think when you are a teen you are less likely have the autonomy, knowledge and connections to the current youth culture to really go out and live it yourself, so you look back to previous generations youth movements as they are more well documented in media that you can access. Or something like that. That's my take on Mixtape being mostly 80s.
Holidays by the sea, soaked with LSD.

Original hardcore jungle from 93.
She invited me into her long dark tunnel. 31 seconds would be a very generous estimate. Also introduced me to jungle. and crack. and her crack. I am not sorry for any of the previous sentences.

Prodigy in 94, moving from being the hardcore rave crowd into mainstream popularity and generally credited with uniting the metal/alt and rave crowds in that mid 90's fusion of everything.
Ok...so maybe rave music isn't so bad after all...also drugs.

I think Cypress Hill get a bit overlooked these days, but their first 3 albums rocked. Black Sunday was more gangsta than Temples of Boom, which really went heavy on the weed smoking vibe.
Weren't many people at my school into rap, but after I drifted off from metal my bros were also into it, so it was all good.

Guess I'll do my early 00s teenage soundtrack then

This is from 1991, but I have a strong connection to it. One of my best friends lived in the Antwerp burbs, and the garage/shed behind his house became our hangout spot. No matter what time of day you showed, there were always people inside. Met so many friends there. And the stereo would always be playing Belgian Asociality.

Chosen because of my first crush. Not Alizee, but a girl I knew who resembled her a lot, but blonde. Man, I crushed on her so hard. Never went anywhere because I had no game, still don't actually, and she was frankly out of my league.

I was more a metalhead at the time, and not particularly into punkrock, but we hung out in a lot of the same spaces as the skaters, and through friends I made among them I got exposed to a lot of bands like The Offspring, NOFX, No Use For a Name, Green Day, and of course Lagwagon. The album this song is on is of particular fondness because it was playing when I popped my cherry.

On the list because it's the song that got me interested in metal. To this day it is still my favorite song of theirs

Back then I was also playing competitive Team Fortress Classic in a clan, and whenever I played a match I would be blasting this album. It helped me get in the zone, until I figured out that being able to hear your enemies coming is really useful.

Because very few places catered to any of them, the skaters, punks, metalheads and goth ended up congregating in the same places. This song was like the connective tissue between them. Even the biggest genre elitists rocked out when this came on.

I was the first in my group of friends to get my drivers license, and an old beater to drive around, and obviously that meant I had to chauffeur people. I had a bunch of CDs in my car, but every time we drove to a party or gig, my then girlfriend made me put on this song on repeat the entire ride.

This is more a song from my early college years, but I was still in my teens so it counts, and it was the anthem of a crazy night out that ended with a building burning down.

It's pretty much an encapsulation of early 00s Antwerp nightlife, warts and all.

Favorite song of a good friend who committed suicide in 2004. We never saw it coming. I still wonder if it would've turned out differently had he opened up about his chronic troubles with depression0

Thanks for introducing me to the Fear Factory cover of Cars, I had no idea it existed.

However, damn you for putting in more songs in than me. I must rectify this, and seeing as we're including teens rather than just school...

Mad Doktas of Mind Alteration, 96.
First Hardcore/Gabba tune I bought in 96 from a record shop in Camden just after leaving school, went headlong into the London freeparty scene for a long time, which got very messy.

I shared the original up in post #1,131, but this is evidence this song is getting noticed since it's getting reaction videos like this. AI generated imagery and vocals, but the lyrics were crafted by a human, and that's where this song is so incredibly well done. Every bar is absolutely triggering (in a good way) for a fan of "IT."
