These are some of my personal favorites I'm collected the past few years. Most of them are melodic or uplifting tunes, hope you'd like at least some of them. There isn't a specific artist, I just like the songs based on what they sound like. (I just realised these were trance but I'll leave them up anyway lol)

You can't really jump on them much for using blanket terms, since there are TONS of Genres and Sub-Genres that encompass all the different styles when it comes to electronic music. (Though you are right in defending to the true meaning of techno, don't get me wrong)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_electronic_music_genres

Most people tend to use techno as the general term since it was the root of it all and it's much easier to type or say than electronic music.
Not attacking, just educating.

And yes, I know that there are a fuckload of subgenres. I'd venture to say that I'm familiar with more than most of them too.

Edm is correct and easier to type then techno.
You two seem to know a thing or two...but I've got one that will stump you for quite a while I'm sure!

What American Hardcore DJ, who's spun at clubs all over the world, including clubs in Italy, put out the track, "Here Comes Tha Sound," and what record label put it out? Bonus points for year...

god damn fluffybacon just chill...

anyways "techno" is now a fully generic term for any kind of electronic music now. but if you want check out hardstyle, like headhunterz or something of the HTID collection. drum and bass, like pendulum is good, sound awesome but isint as much electronic sounding as the other songs on here. still sounds awesome playing a racing game though lol.

This website, though probably far from perfect, might help you define your tastes a bit. I listen to quite a bit of electronic music but I'm not very good at defining genres personally. Anyway here are some of my favourites that I would consider techno

Justice, Daft punk, Benny Benassi, also zanza labs
Okay, I understand justice, daft punk, and benassi, all being well know dj's who dweel in the same area of music, but zanza labs kinda came from nowhere. A rarely used alias of italian hardstyle artist Tatanka?
the only reason i know that is cause i watched this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBVIA1J5frc and i liked one of the songs so i looked it up and it was zanza labs

I always liked Woody McBride and Mike Dearborn. Otherwise I go for labels, stuff on overdrive was usually pretty good, cluster, hydraulix, prolekult, never found much on D-jax that I liked though. Hardcore techno is/was my thing, standard techno/'dance music' I'm not so up on.

I'm not sure if you will except these, but i recently made a kind of electronica playlist so i'll go ahead and suggest the ones which are more likely to appeal to you.

Blue Song- Mint Royale
American Dream- Jakatta
Extreme Ways- Moby
Chemical Beats- The Chemical Brothers

VNV nation they are IDM/INDUSTRIAL but they're still from the long vague off-shoot of techno.
Correct. Good job!
I think you should start teaching, because these guys just got schooled!

I'll say this, for classic/detroit techno Model 500 - No UFOs is a decent listen.

That's probably what he means. He is wrong though. What he should have said is 'I don't like techno, no matter how good it is, it's just not my thing'.
