As someone who wants to expand their horizons, as games go, I want to take the MGS games for a spin.
My problem is, there's like, a bazillion versions of each of the PS2 releases.
Which versions should I play?

There's MGS2: Sons of Liberty, and there's MGS2: Substance
Then there's MGS3: Snake Eater, and MGS3: Substinence.

Are these games actually different, or am I missing something here?

EDIT:
Thanks guys, I found a complete collection online for cheap, and I'll get that when I've got the scratch on me.

Sons of Liberty and Snake Eater are the original releases. The other two are expanded editions.

With MGS2 there aren't really many significant differences between the two, just a disc full of special VR missions.

With MGS3, Subsistence has a completely different camera system to Snake Eater that (I've not played it) seems to be preferred by fans. I think that version is a lot harder to get a copy of though.

If im not mistaken the latter two of each of the games simply contain more content, You will lose nothing by buying them. I believe they contain extra theater and cutscene viewing options and VR missons which are enjoyable little challenges to do after you finish the main story.

If you haven't played the original MGS on the playstation, I highly reccomend playing it first as its a great game and contains alot of important storyline information.

I'm gonna do that, but it's much easier to obtain, because there's only on version.

MGS 2: Substance contains both the sons of liberty game and a bunch of other stuff included so go with that. As for the other one I am not sure but I am guessing Substinence does the same thing for snake eater. Also if you can track down a copy I recommand MGS 1 just so you understand what is going on with number 2. It was on the PS1 so the graphics are crap but in my opinion it is the best of the lot.

Also if you are going to buy MGS 1 there is an Integral Version that has more content buy that one

Ah I see, I hope you enjoy the series! I'm a big fan of the games, save the newest title.

This.

No matter what version of MSG2 you get, the main game is the same. Substance just has some bonus missions and material. However, with MGS3, Subsistence has a full camera system whereas Snake Eater has a top-down fixed camera. Look them up at Wikipedia to get the full list of extras.

What is money in the face of ultimate enjoyment? NOTHING I say, NOTHING.

I thought that was the PC version? Also, MGS3 Subsistence's camera works much better. It also comes with a bonus disc that has the retro Metal Gear 1 and 2. I can't rate those, since I have gotten Subsistence without disc 2 TWICE.

Nope! I found a complete collection for about $30 (shipping included)
It has all the updated versions, too.

Oh, it doesn't?
That's sucky.
Well, if I get them one at a time, then I can avoid the money issues and still have a lot of games.

You lucky so and so...

The prices are even worse here in the UK. $228 new and $105 used. Just for Subsistence.
