Hello boys and girls of the Escapist, I need some help with the overly complex piece of kit that is the PS3, I've checked the manual and the internet to no avail.

Now for some strange reason my PS3 is English but I'm French, and I'd like it to be French.

so English is the default setting but I've changed it to French, yet my games still play in English, so I changed further settings and still it speaks English.

I have tried giving it an espresso and ciggarettes and its still being English, just laying there while I make beautiful love to it.

Several reasons why I want it in French, I have cousins and nephews that visit me in London that don't understand English, also I want to call Liam Neeson "Papa" as opposed to daddy. And the wierd thing is that Ezio still speaks English, dude your Italian, HAVE SOME FUCKING NATIONAL PRIDE! even though your not real.

Maybe it's something in your online account? Other than that, I wouldn't know.

Best call customer services.

Most games have multiple languages on them anyway. Just look in the options and change it to French.

That all sounds like game settings, if you're buying the games in the UK, I'm not sure all of them are gonna have a French language option.
BTW, there is an option to have everyone in Assassin's Creed 2 speak in their native tongue (Italian).

We tried that, all the options point towards English.

oh well.

edit: which is fucking weird that there's no French option, what with blue ray having the capacity to store a fuck ton of info.

That's your problem cos your console is set to the UK it will alto set english, you might be able to set your Ps3 to french but not all games have French Dubs or subs.

Well if you're buying games in Europe, then you should be alright to change the settings in game.

I take it that you've changed your System Language to French, and I'm sorry to tell you that that is really all you can do when it comes to the actual PS3. Whether the games themselves have a french language option or not is entirely dependent on whether or not the developers have put one in.

Its more to do with the uk being treated as a separate region (see that little union jack on the back of the box).

So if I take Assassins Creed on holiday to French will it magically speak in France?

edit; shit that was meant for Sephiroth

Thanks for the help Sephiroth, so your saying I can't change it, while I'm thanking you I feel I should totally hate on you for giving me the correct information that didn't help me the slightlest...

Damn that Sephiroth, telling me facts with regards to the PS3, is there no end to his evil?

I dont think changing ps3 settings will change the games themselves, i think games that support the french language will have a language option in the game itself

Changing the settings on the PS3 is not going to change the settings in-game. You should be able to select your language settings in the options. It's all down to how much effort the Developers put into making it multi-lingual and multi-national.

[Think of it this way, you set your PC to French, but buy a German game, do you expect the language/Audio to automatically be in French? No.]

My immediate thought is that the games themselves do not have French audio (as others have said). If your menus for the PS3 itself are coming up in French that's probably a sign that it's the best you can do there.

Keep in mind that English is in a league of it's own internationally. It's the language of business, and culture in general, spoken by more people than anything else. That's why guys like pilots and Air Traffic controllers are supposed to use English exclusively when doing their job.

Speaking for myself I can understand your point, but I'm a supporter of a universal human language to facilitate communication accross the globe. English is already making major strides in that direction, though it's not there yet. I think that national/cultural pride is actually an obstacle here where people even go so far as to insist on not learning English for that reason. Don't get me wrong, I have no objections to people also knowing other language, but I think everyone should obtain fluency in english first before anything else for the sake of global communication. If English wasn't as prolific as it is now I'd wind up supporting whatever language was, but it is, so this is my point.

At any rate, the point above the rant above is that I think a lot of people all over the world (many whom are not English/British) agree with me. This might be why Assasin's Creed 2 doesn't have any foreign language options (I didn't buy it, so I don't know, but that's how it sounds).

When it comes to your Nephews, I'd consider wanting to do video games to be a good motivation to obtain fluency in the language.

Don't get me wrong, I do have some sympathy that you can't play your game in the launguage you want though, especially when some games (like Deadly Premonition, and Strange Journey to name a couple of fairly recent ones) have gone so far as to at least include French on their packaging and manual.

Still, it could be worse. I mean your typing here, so I imagine it's hardly the same kind of disaster as someone importing a game that seems to be in English and finding out it's only in Japanese or whatever. :p
