I do not regard myself as a console gamer. Yes, I enjoy playing console games and I can have some extreme fun doing so, but I consider myself a PC gamer first and foremost. I started playing PC games first and I have never stopped since. As a result, I don't follow console fads much and have come across something regularly that befuddles me.

What is it with console gamers and their fixation on placing various letters in and around their gamertags? I refer to:

Xx blah xX
ii blah ii
Oo blah oO

Etc, etc, etc. Can someone please explain this to me? I am thoroughly confused by this.

Because the original one is already taken, and instead of thinking up something else, they just put a bunch of random crap around the name.

It's one of those things unfortunately ingrained into gaming culture, like certain PC Gamers being patronising to console gamers.

(also, the more X's on your name, the better 1337 360 quickscopings sniper you will be)

It's so they can have a unique version of there name MMO players do it also

Like of EvilSoul is taken they do XxEvilSoulxX, at least that's how it worked for me and my friends in ROSE Online.

i don't really know myself as i don't i think though it is a way to get a username that might already be taken without having to change it. i.e. say blah was taken, instead of putting blaw or whatever they just use the letters to make a name they can use without having to change it.

This, my Xbox Live name was taken so I just put xyz at the end. ALthough, I would have to shoot myself if I ever did that Xx and the beginning and front bollocks.

pretty much this

same happens in MMOs to
though I use - when a character name is taken that i want, useually works to (side note:: i played CoH a lot, so this was a common problem for me)

The same reason why people used to insert:

Kyubi
Sephiroth
Sasuke
Shadow
Dark
etc
etc
etc

they think its cool

OP, I'm a PC gamer as well, and I can with great confidence say that this has nothing to do with console gaming. I see this all the time on PC games online.

Three x's in a row show that someone is much more mature than anyone else.
At least that's what they intend xP

So we can get the name we like.

its like those people you see online who had a number 2 or 3 to their name. and trust me, enough PC gamers do that too.

Psh, I don't know where people are getting all this crap about the original name being taken from. The amount of Xs around your name shows how good you are at Call Of Duty, and therefore your relative worth in the universe.

Don't have any Xs in your name?

Then you are a plebian unworthy of licking the boots of a L33T COD master like -=XxXxxXxX=-I_PWN_UR_MUM-=XxXxxXxX=-.

Hmm, I was unaware that PC gamers do this also. I have been playing online on PC since 2008 (yes very late to the party, but I was limited by parents and crappy Irish internets) and have never once come across it. Only ever saw it on XBL, hence my assumption that it was a purely a console fad.

Haha, this thread cracks me up. Mostly because recently with the PS3 thing and having to change your password, my first PS3 account used an email I haven't used in years and forgot the password to. My old handle was Zactastik. Then I had to make a new account recently and I wanted something not as corny. So I was thinking up names and one common name I have used before is various words that replaced "CY" with "PSI". I decided I wanted my new name to be "Psi-Borg", it was taken. As was Psiborg, Psi*Borg, Psib0rg, etc. All the "CY" version were taken too. Sure I coulda sat down and thought of a new handle but seriously, what is wrong with xXNameXx? I sent a friend request to my buddy and laughed that now I was one of those retards with X's in their name. Don't be jealous.

So my name on PSN now is xXPsi-BorgXx :p Curse whoever it is that stole my handle!

I'm pretty sure that actually originated on the PC long ago, it was meant to obscure your username in a multiplayer game - the only way to see your lose/win record was to type in your username manually, (back when there wasn't any auto matching) when people wanted to beat up some noobs without the noobs realising who they are facing. And then people got used to it and started doing it from habit. Then eventually it slipped over to the consoles...
Actually very similar to how leet started - same goal, writing something that no sane person should be able write.
