This summer I need something good to put on my iPod. It can be pretty much anything as long as it is completely audio: music, podcasts, comedy shows, etc... Free would be better, but I don't mind shelling out some cash.

If you're wondering why, I got a summer job, but all I do is tell kids when they can go down a waterslide 3 hours a day 5 days a week. I'm allowed to listen to an iPod, but I can't have anything that requires me to look away from the slide.

If you came looking for something to listen to, I'd recommend the bands Lodger ( http://lodger.tv/ ) and The Lodger

Neil Young's Harvest, most of Primus' discography and some Newton Faulkner. Perfect summer music IMO

Newton Faulkner is awesome, as MaxChaos said. If you like Electropop then try Pixie Lott, Alex Roots and La Roux, and definitely Little Boots. If you're a fan of Indie, go for The Enemy, The Wombats, and Reverend and the Makers (the last one is a must). Drum and Bass, pick Pendulum and The Prodigy, especially their song Omen.

That's about it for now, although a bit of Evanescence never goes amiss either :)

EDIT: How could I forget Muse? Definitely, anything from Muse is a must have. Plus, Nickelback (please don't flame me for this), they're actually pretty good, I especially recommend their songs Photograph, If Everyone Cared, and Far Away.

It depends on what you're looking for. I'd feel a bit dumb recommending Heaven Shall Burn if you like 50 cent. Though If I was you I'd check out some of the comedians available on itunes, most of them are good and you can listen to their stuff and still enjoy it every now and then.

I suggest The Adam Carolla Podcast. It's free on iTunes and it's pretty funny. Plus, he has one out every Monday through Friday, so you'll have plenty to listen to.

If reading is your thing, and you don't mind spending the cash, Audible.com has audiobooks you can buy pretty cheap. I use them to get through hours and hours of night shift. Huge selection too.

I'd say Pink Floyd to relieve the monotony, and maybe some Emerson, Lake and Palmer.

Depends what music you're into. For the sake of advise I'll say the compilation album Radiodread. If you're wondering, it's a reggae version of the album OK Computer by Radiohead and is just an amazing feat. The guys who put it together also made an album called Dub Side Of The Moon (You ought to be able to guess what that's a cover of) which is also pretty good.

Personally I like listening to tunes by Yoko Kanno, did the music for a lot of good anime, most notably Cowboy Bebop. Dunno if it's your thing, and you'd probably have to find an importer to get the actual CDs (or maybe they are online somewhere?). There are 1 minute demos at the following site: http://www.jameswong.com/ykproject/disc/music.php. My faves are the big jazz pieces like Tank, Too Good Too Bad, and What Planet is This?! from Cowboy bebops OST1 and Knocking on Heavens door movie OST.

COPYPASTA TIEM
The Abbasi Brothers - Mellow post rock with some electronic influences
Aeon Spoke - Side project of Paul Masvidal of Cynic.
Agalloch - Dark Metal from Washington State (if I remember correctly) if you're a fan of opeth you'll definitely love this group
Alcest - French Shoegaze from the musical genius Neige. Souvenirs d'un autre monde is probably one of my favorite albums of all time
The American Dollar - Great post-rock with just enough electronica. Great chillout music.
Amesoeurs - another project of Neige's. More Punk influenced with some Black Metal influence too.
Day Without Dawn - Fantastic blend of metal and catchy riffs and singing. Their LP is way too short, but amazing
Daylight Dies - Great Death/Doom band from America, really clean growls and very depressing Riffs.
The Dear Hunter - Progressive Rock project who just (leaked) their third of six albums. each album is a part of a 6 act play which tells the story of a young man's life from birth to death.
The Depreciation Guild - really catchy shoegaze/chiptune mixup that is really great. Their albums are free for download from their site.
Devil sold his soul - one of the few post-hardcore groups that are actually interesting, worth checking out if you're into that sort of thing.
Do Make Say think - preeminent post rock band from canada. canada churns out some of the best post rock this decade
earshot - great rock band from illinois? the singer sounds a lot like M.J.Keenan from Tool.
Electric Wizard - FUCKING STONER DOOM DUDE
Explosions in the Sky - awesome post rock to fall asleep to. very emotional music.
Giant Squid - awesome sludge band out of somewhere in america. definitely check them out, really great stuff, the singer is amazing
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Wrote the book on Post rock. also from canada
Gojira - awesome death/grove metal band from france. very deep lyrics, from mars to sirius is one of my favorite metal albums of all time. pretty good album art to boot
Gordian Knot - One of the side projects of Sean Malone of Cynic. very good progressive rock stuff with a lot of guest appearances from various other bands.
Have a Nice Life - amazing shoegaze/doom music ABSOLUTE MUST HAVE
Isis - when you think post-metal, you can't help but think of this group.
Katatonia - Death/Doom band that has progressed to playing more depressive Rock. all of it is top notch though. this is one of those bands in which the fans are always ranting and raving that their older stuff is better.
Massive Attack - Trip hop group that has a great discography. this group got me into appreciating electronic music. Do you like the intro theme to House? well this group does it.
Mogwai - another preeminent Post Rock band, but not as atmospheric as GY!BE.
My Bloody Valentine - Greatest Shoegaze/Dreampop group to grace the face of the planet. Get loveless, crank up the volume and enjoy wall of sound.
November's Doom - Great Death/Doom metal band. if you enjoyed Daylight Dies, you'll definitely love these guys.
The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - just released their ST album. if you enjoy the shoegaze above, then this will not let you down. a bit more pop sounding, but great still.
Pelican - Best post-metal group. period. Isis may be the posterboys, but this is where its at.
A Silver Mt. Zion - great experimental rock group with members of GY!BE. thier first full album is a bit more experimental than 13 blues.
Silversun Pickups - Great shoegaze band. I have not removed their latest album off of repeat since it came out.
The Warlocks - Imagine if Thom Yorke hung out with stoners who worshipped Black Sabbath, and then Thom and those guys formed a band. well this is it.
We made God - Great Icelandic Post Rock/metal group. if you enjoy the Deftones, then this band is really worth checking out.
Wolves in the Throne Room - American Atmospheric Black Metal. the TROO KVLT crowd frowns on this band, but I think this group is one of the best Black Metal groups currently recording/touring.
Anathema - Great Doom metal band with a large discography. their older stuff isn't as good as some of their later stuff.
Balmorhea - Great neo-classical ambient band.
Below the Sea - another great Canadian Post-Rock band which stays at the fuzzier side, almost shoegaze-y
Bird From the Abyss - Finnish experimental Folk/Doom band. I've had this album on repeat ever since I found it. great stuff
Calder - Electronic/Post-Rock. the band sounds like they are heavily influenced by Sigur Ros.
Centenaire - French Folk Rock band, very interesting lyrics and vocals.
Diablo Swing Orchestra - Metal and Orchestra meet in a head-on collision, this gem emerges from the rubble.
Drudkh - Ukranian Black Metal, if you're not into black metal, they do have an entirely folk album called 'Songs of Grief and Solitude'
Elliott Smith - Singer-Songwriter in the 90's. some of the most depressing stuff you'll ever hear.
George Dorn Screams - they just released a new album this year. very good, dark rock from poland.
Gray Strawberries - epic post rock from Brazil
Hammock - ambient post-rock, great to relax to. awesome soundscaping.
Heirs - good blend of post-metal/hardcore from Australia.
Ihsahn - side project of the dude with the same name, great progressive/power metal. and that's rare coming from me, for I see power metal as cheese.
Krallice - Black metal project of the guitarist of behold the arctopus. almost listenable black metal :p
Mineral - 90's emo rock. when it was good and not some fad for scenesters.
mono - Japanese post rock band, recently came out with one of the best albums from the genre.
O'Death - catchy and deep folk/country. you might be thinking WHAT THE HELL? COUNTRY. just give it a listen
October Tide - short lived side project of Mike Akerfeldt and a few guys from katatonia, truly depressive metal.
Red Sparrows - great Post-Metal with a much softer side, leaning toward Post-Rock
Ride - One of the overlooked Shoegaze bands of the early 90's. great stuff, some of it has a jazz influence
Sculptured - Avant Garde metal side project of Don Anderson, the guitarist from agalloch.
Woburn House - only have one album to my knowledge, they're an american sludge band which is a good gateway to the genre because they have an ebb and flow to their music.
Yann Tiersen - Amazing neo-classical artist who is extremely active, he does a ton of collaborations and stuff. his discography is like 20+ albums

oh and on the internet, you can get anything for free (or at least a minor sexual favor) if you look hard enough

For easy listening, especially this time of year, I usually go with the DJ group "Alias & Tarsier". You can find them about, but MySpaz [http://www.myspace.com/aliasandtarsier] is a good enough place to start.

Beyond that, a lot of what I listen to is soundtracks.

I recommend anything by Sarah Brightman. Her songs are beautifully sung, they're emotional while still being fun and sometimes very upbeat and her orchestra and band are very very good. I recommend the album Harem.
