I have noticed in a number of different threads over a number of years on these forums and beyond that people seem quite keen to embrace the idea that all humans should just start shooting each other as a form of "survival of the fittest", murdering "the retards, the old and the slow", which I found slightly surprising and also amazingly silly.

Now, the "strange something" was an idea that struck me whilst I was thinking about how these people talking about "survival of the fittest" are quite wrong/egotistical/insane/asshole-like:
Aren't the currently "strong" the weak and overly-specialised when the circumstances change and the currently "weak" the ones with room to adjust to a new environment?

What do you guys think?

What you say makes sense. People often claim that we should make sure that the weak and old and sick should be stopped from surviving for evolutionary purposes, ignoring that this goes against the evolutionary principle that anything that survives must be fit to survive or it wouldn't have. If the sick and old and weak are alive, then from an evolutionary perspective they are meant to survive. Being physically fit does by no means make you perpetually evolutionary superior.

gee whizz and lets not stop there, how about we eliminate all creeds and cultures other then our own, after all weakness is just a matter of perspective....

at which point it becomes a slippery slope to concentration camps, mass genocide etc etc.

thats why we dont do it!

I like how you actually read my post...

What I was saying was "isn't this survival of the fittest thing flawed because all people have purpose".

Thank you for actually reading my post, it is very appreciated.

Also, how did you read my mind? This is eerie.

I support murder for the means of lowering the population...i don't really care if the weak or strong are targeted so long as everone knows if they come knocking on my door looking for an easy kill there going to get face full of bat and a stomach full of knife.

You worry me, sir. Truly.

No, I'm serious. I thought you were serious too.
Eugenics, for everybody.
No, I was just trying to say that this idea struck me whilst I was contemplating how flawed most people's ideas of "survival of the fittest" was.
That is, that everyone is fit enough for survival up until that point where they're dead.

It worries me too. This is a common trend on forums: A poster supporting the deaths of a certain group of people that never seems to include the poster.

"Something strange.. in your neighbourhood. Who ya gonna call.. GHOSTBUSTERS!"

Couldn't resist, first thing I thought of seeing the title.

OT: On the one hand, everyone can potentially bring some value to the betterment of humanity and society. On the other hand, there are far too many wrongs in the world, people taking advantage of other people, and nothing that can be done about it. Like the expenses scandal in the UK. They're the freaking government, and they're the ones cheating us out of our money? To pay for their MOATS and DUCK HOUSES?
You know the world is FUBAR when your -own- government is the cheating bunch. Who can bring 'em down? A revolution? Unlikely. Put them to court? Who? How?
I think the world has too many stupid people. I don't mean those with mental difficulties, that's not their fault. I mean people who just don't give a shit. If anyone's seen one of the various TV shows depicting British teenagers.. yeah. We really have those. It's fucking shameful. And I -am- a British teenager.

Hm.. think I may have rambled off on a tangent there. My bad.

I think the population could do with some shaving down due to overpopulation, but noone has the right to say who should and shouldn't live.

Survival of the fittest does seem like a more stable way for the world to work, but i'd hate to see anyone be refused help for that reason, it just seems selfish. If we can improve other people's lives then we should be doing that rather than thinking of a way to work around it.

Thing is, we already are living by survival of the fittest. We always have been. If we help somebody sick survive, then that means the sick person is fit to survive since s/he has got what it takes to survive. Here, "what it takes to survive" refers to people who will help her/him. If you're alive, you've got what it takes to survive - if you hadn't had it you wouldn't have been alive.

I do believe "disinterested teens" are a result of the boredom inherent in modern life, which is probably why so many people have these fantasies about some barren Wild-West world where everyone's scrabbling for their life, I suppose it must seem amazingly exciting compared to an office cubicle.

So who was it that wrote that short story, the one where the scientist gets coerced to design a virus to cull the worlds population to a "reasonable" level. The vector is supposed to be food shipments to areas in need ("since thats's where there are too many people"). When he is finished he invites the dignitaries who forced him to do this to a presentation. Over tea and dainty sandwiches he tells them about the wheat he engineered to kill the percentage of the population that has this one specific genetic marker. "Oh, good", say the dignitaries. "Let's ship as soon as possible, but let's make sure none of it goes to the home market". "That's OK", says the scientist. "I took the selection marker from myself, and I hope you all enjoyed those nice sandwiches we just ate."

They're only disinterested because of the culture and how they've been brought up, and haven't found a way to appreciate some things. Like family. Or making something. Or drawing, or writing, or any other constructive hobby. Instead they get kicks from sex, drugs and alcohol, because.. that's the popular thing to do. It's what everyone else does. Why not them? Bleh.

These people simply misunderstand what fitness can mean depending on context. They mistake it to mean physical strength in all situations.

Kids go around doing stupid stuff, no matter the country... it's how you figure out what's smart and what's not, by doing every thing in your power to be an idiot so your mind can form an opinion on it.

Well, most people on these forums were probably 12, and their idea of being 'strong' comes from watching Rambo. I got caught up in something like this recently, where someone mistook a post I made, and it made me realise just how many people still think that the 'fittest' are the ones with the biggest arms. It's quite... sad.
Indeed, it's this same mentality that leaves people thinking females are unable to fight... it is quite sad.
